3 Pastor s Column September 10-11, 2016 This man welcomes sinners and eats with them. It is hard to believe that it has been fifteen years since those hijacked planes were flown into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, bringing terrorism to our doorstep and changing our way of life in our city and our nation. On the one hand, it seems like forever since those twin towers stood so straight and tall in lower Manhattan with that fabulous restaurant Windows on the World providing spectacular views of the tri-state area. It is hard to remember a time when we could board a plane without waiting on interminably long lines, having to take off our shoes and belts and submit ourselves to humiliating scrutiny. On the other hand, for those of us old enough to remember that day, the images are still so vivid and burned into our memory like it was yesterday. With never ending wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and terrorist organizations like Al Qaeda and ISIS becoming household names, it is no wonder that we are tired and angry and look for retribution. And on this fifteenth anniversary of 9/11 we have as our gospel reading the entire fifteenth chapter of St. Luke. Pope St. John Paul II loved to call Luke the Gospel of Mercy. And the fifteenth chapter in particular has been called "the gospel within the gospel" because it contains the very essence of the good news which Jesus came to tell; namely, God's infinite love and boundless mercy for us his children. Jesus tells the three parables which comprise this chapter: the parable of the lost sheep, the parable of the lost coin, and the parable of the lost or prodigal son because the Scribes and Pharisees were complaining that this man welcomes sinners and eats with them. But in each parable, the main figure is not the title character, but rather it is the shepherd of the lost sheep, the owner of the lost coin, the father of the prodigal son, all of whom represent the God who not only seeks us out when we are lost but who rejoices and celebrates when we are found and return to Him. And while we so often identify ourselves with the lost sheep, or the lost coin, or the prodigal son or his self-righteous brother, it is the loving, forgiving, and merciful God whom we are called to emulate. And perhaps amid the hurt and the painful memories we have carried with us since those senseless atrocities were committed, mercy and forgiveness is what we most need to offer in order that we ourselves might be healed. Some people have a hard time thinking about forgiveness because they do not understand what forgiveness is all about. Forgiving another does not mean absolving them of responsibility, of somehow saying that what they have done is all right, or not so bad, or is in any way justified. No, to forgive another is to confirm that they have done wrong and that they are in need of forgiveness. Mercy does not cancel out justice or the need for conversion, but it does open up a path of charity that encourages and promotes conversion and justice. Forgiveness is the fundamental condition of the reconciliation of God s children with their heavenly Father, and of men and women with one another. There is an expression that goes, Forgive and forget. But in our first reading, Moses asks God not to forget, but to remember his servants and the promises He made to them. The challenge for us fifteen years after that despicable terrorist attack on 9/11 is to forgive and forget the anger, bitterness and hatred, but also to forgive and remember; to remember our loved ones, our family members, friends, and neighbors whose lives were lost, to remember the heroes, the first responders, the members of the Police and Fire Departments who courageously risked and sacrificed their lives, to remember how the entire city and country came together to help one another and to support one another in our time of crisis. The Knights of Columbus have donated prayer cards and asked that September 11 th be observed as a World Day of Prayer for Peace. May peace reign in our hearts and in our world. Fr. Bob

5 Office of Faith Formation St. Mark Catholic Academy s first day of school was Wednesday, Sept. 7th. All of us were together for the opening of school mass on Friday, Sept. 9th.
