3 Pastor s Column December 24 25, 2016 All I Want For Christmas Is You Just under two weeks ago, I, my family, and more than fifty parishioners from St. Mark and St. Margaret Mary, attended the Spirit of Christmas concert at Lincoln Center. Not only was it for a great cause, as the concert raised a million dollars for Catholic education in the Diocese of Brooklyn, but it was tremendously entertaining as well. Act 1 featured the New York Tenors, Daniel Rodriguez, Andy Cooney, and Christopher Macchio. A Puerto Rican, Irishman, and Italian, these three terrific tenors are part of the beautiful mosaic that make up our city and fill the pews of our Catholic churches. It was so nice to hear their golden voices give glory to the God who gave them their precious gifts by performing many traditional carols such as O Come All Y e Faithful (including the Latin lyrics Adeste Fideles), O Holy Night, Do You Hear What I Hear, The Holy City Jerusalem, and Silent Night individually and together. After a brief intermission, the star of the show took the stage for Act 2. Sister Cristina Scuccia, a petite, young Ursuline nun from Sicily who won the 2014 season of The Voice of Italy a couple of years ago, came out to make her U. S. debut, wearing a plain grey ankle length habit with simple black shoes and a crucifix around her neck. Anticipation was building as she picked up the microphone and began to sing: I don't want a lot for Christmas. There is just one thing I need. I don't care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree. I just want you for my own, more than you could ever know. Make my wish come true. All I want for Christmas is you. And as an enthralled audience looked on, Sister Cristina began to skip across the stage, shimmy her shoulders and rock the house, singing a secular song written and first performed in 1994 by Mariah Carey about how all she wants for Christmas is to be with her lover. As the initial shock and surprise subsided, I was mesmerized by the angelic voice of this sweet young woman who had consecrated her life to God. Perhaps I should not have been so shocked in the first place. After all, for The Voice of Italy she had sung No One by Alicia Keys as her blind audition and won by singing Irene Cara s Flashdance... What a Feeling. And the lead song on her first album is Madonna s Like a Virgin. But somehow, coming from this nun radiating innocence and joy, these songs take on an entirely different meaning. And so as I watched and listened to her that night at Lincoln Center, I could picture her singing those lovely words, All I want for Christmas is you, to the God to whom she is espoused and with whom she is madly in love. And the more I allowed myself to enter into that moment, I began to hear God speaking those words through her to me: I just want you for my own, more than you could ever know. Make my wish come true. All I want for Christmas is you. Music critic Emma Green once said of this song in The Atlantic, Carey s masterpiece is an incredible feat of philosophical subterfuge. Christmas is a time of material and affection-based excess, yet the song is narrowly focused on just one thing: getting to be with a specific person; you. It rejects the idea of love in general in favor of love in particular. And that is exactly what God does. God loves you. Not some fuzzy you in general, but you in particular. Not some idealized version of you, but you, just the way you are, right here, right now. Picture God singing to you, I just want you for my own, more than you could ever know. Make my wish come true. All I want for Christmas is you. What is it that you want? Do you want Him in return? Merry Christmas! -Fr. Bob

Hence he was insecure and fearful of any threat to his throne. He was a master politician and a tyrant capable of extreme brutality. He killed his wife, his brother and his sister s two husbands, to name only a few. Matthew 2:1-18 tells this story: Herod was greatly troubled when astrologers from the east came asking the whereabouts of the newborn king of the Jews, whose star they had seen. They were told that the Jewish Scriptures named Bethlehem as the place where the Messiah would be born. Herod cunningly told them to report back to him so that he could also do him homage. They found Jesus, offered him their gifts and, warned by an angel, avoided Herod on their way home. Jesus escaped to Egypt. Herod became furious and ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under. The horror of the massacre and the devastation of the mothers and fathers led Matthew to quote Jeremiah: A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children (Matthew 2:18). Rachel was the wife of Jacob/ Israel. She is pictured as weeping at the place where the Israelites were herded together by the conquering Assyrians for their march into captivity. 5 As the students of Saint Mark Catholic Academy have been preparing for the birth of Jesus, they have prepared their hearts during the Season of Advent. As part of a program sponsored by Scholastic, our student government collected over 60 pairs of pajamas. Scholastic will place a book with each pair of pajamas to be donated to children in homeless shelters. In addition, grades 4 and 8 participated in the Believe Campaign sponsored by Macy s. After listening to the story Yes, Virginia There is a Santa Claus, students wrote a letter to Santa. Each letter placed in the Macy s Santa Mailbox represented a dollar donation by Macy s to The Make a Wish Foundation. The Fourth Graders also sent in a donation to Habitat For Humanity using the money collected in their daily class collection. We are all in the spirit of giving the true meaning of Christmas.
