3 WELCOME In light of Jesus mission on earth (his birth, life, death, resurrection and ascension), the Church embarks on the steady and faithful mission of Jesus through Ordinary Time. Jesus has taken his heavenly throne, and so from Pentecost to Christ the King Sunday (the Sunday before Advent), the Church walks in the steady and normal growing of Christ s Kingdom in us and through us. OPENING PROCLAMATION Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his Kingdom, now and forever. Amen. PRAYER FOR PURE WORSHIP Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. OPENING PROCLAMATION We begin the service by declaring God s worth. He calls us to worship, and there is no higher calling than to give God the honor and glory due his Name. This changes during the liturgical year: Advent and Lent are penitential seasons; therefore, we focus on receiving God s mercy. Epiphany, Pentecost, and Ordinary Time focus on the wonder of the Triune God meeting with us. Easter declares the Resurrection of Jesus. PRAYER FOR PURE WORSHIP We pray this prayer to ask for his mercy in opening our hearts to him so that we may come to worship him with purity. THE LESSONS The Word of God is read weekly from the Old and New Testaments. Both Testaments reveal the person and work of Jesus Christ. THE GOSPEL We stand for the gospel reading to declare that Jesus is the Word of God. As the People of God stood for the reading of the Torah in the Old Testament, so we stand, declaring that Jesus is God s final Word.

4 THE CREED Early Christians labored prayerfully to clearly state the faith that was once and for all delivered to the saints in light of Jesus life and work. The Creed declares the essential beliefs of Christianity as well as protecting the mystery of the relationship among the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We use the Nicene Creed as well as the Apostle s Creed in worship to continually root us in God s transcendent reality, rather than the current cultural moment. SERMON The preacher will open the Bible explain what a particular text means and how it influences our lives. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE God hears the prayers of his people. A leader will lead the congregation in praying for specific needs globally, nationally, and locally. NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son He is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *catholic: refers to the unity of all Christians globally. CHILDREN S SERMON Children ages 0 5 th grade are invited to come to the front for a short message with the pastor. After the Children s message, they are dismissed to TrinKids. THE SERMON PRAYERS

5 CONFESSION Most merciful God, We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, Have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. ABSOLUTION Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE PEACE The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Parents Please receive your children from this time. OFFERING AND DOXOLOGY Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. CONFESSION Because God is kind toward his people, we are honest about our failures and sins. It reminds us of our common disposition with all humanity: For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom 3.23). ABSOLUTION The priest, as Christ s representative, stands and declares the reality of forgiveness Jesus promises to all who seek it in his name. THE PEACE Jesus himself has reconciled us to God making us one in his Name. As he is our peace, he makes us able to speak peace to one another. OFFERING AND DOXOLOGY Knowing that all we have comes from God, we give as he has been generous toward us. We sing the ancient hymn of praise acknowledging God as the first and greatest Giver.

6 THE GREAT THANKSGIVING At this point, we turn our attention to the Lord s Table. We approach the table in celebration for what Jesus has done for us and in reverence as Jesus, the unseen host, welcomes us. We join the song sung by angels gathered around his throne declaring him holy, holy, holy. In joining this song we acknowledge him to be the Sovereign Lord reigning over all. HOLY COMMUNION GREAT THANKSGIVING Is the Father with us? He is. Is Christ among us? He is. Is the Spirit here? He is. This is our God Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are his people. We are redeemed. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to You, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise You, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Almighty God, Owner of all things, we thank you for giving up your only son to die on the cross for us who owe you everything. Pour your refreshing Spirit on us as we remember him in the way he commanded. On the same night that he was betrayed he took bread and gave you thanks: he broke it and gave it to his disciples saying, "Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." Amen. His body was broken for us.

7 In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave thanks: he gave it to them, saying, "Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this as often as you drink it, in the remembrance of me." Amen. We are brothers and sisters through his blood. We have died together. We will rise together. We will live together. Therefore, heavenly Father, hear us as we celebrate this covenant with joy, and await the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He died in our place, making a full atonement for the sins of the whole world, the perfect sacrifice, once and for all. So, Father, sanctify these gifts by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament. You accepted his offering by raising him from death, and granting him great honor at your right hand on high. Amen. Jesus is Lord. This is the feast of victory! The Lamb who was slain has begun his reign. Hallelujah! THE LORD S PRAYER And now, as our Savior taught us, we are bold to pray: BREAKING OF THE BREAD [the Lord s prayer] Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us, once for all upon the cross! Let us keep the feast. Alleluia. The gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you and feed on Him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. THE LORD S PRAYER When asked by his disciples how to pray, Jesus taught them this prayer, and so we pray submitting our desires and needs to his purposes and plans for his sake.

8 THANKSGIVING AND MISSION We acknowledge our thankfulness to the Lord for caring for us and tending to us in Word and Sacrament and, having been reconciled by his grace, we go out to join him in his mission in the world. BENEDICTION As our East African heritage teaches us, we commit all of our afflictions and sorrows to the transforming power of the cross and place our hopes where they do not disappoint, in the sovereign and reigning King Jesus. SONGS OF WORSHIP PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND MISSION Almighty God, eternal Father, we have sat at your feet, learned from your word and eaten from your table. We give you thanks and praise for accepting us into your family. Send us out with your blessing, to live and to witness for you in the power of your Spirit, through Jesus Christ, the Firstborn from the dead. Amen. BENEDICTION All our problems, All our difficulties, All the devil s works, All our hopes, BLESSING ANNOUNCEMENTS DISMISSAL We send to the cross of Christ! We send to the cross of Christ!
