4 Call to Worship Leader: We come to worship our God, to listen to the One who calls us here. People: We come trusting God to lead us in the coming days, as surely as were our grandparents in the faith. Leader: We come to worship our God, to shout with joy to the God of all people. People: We come to the Creator of all things, to be bathed in the waters of life. Leader: We come to the Feast of God's faithful, to be fed by the One who never forsakes us. People: We come to worship our God, to sing aloud to the One who saves us. *Hymn - All Things Bright and Beautiful GTG #20 *Prayer of Confession Leader: Despite all the ways we speak of sin - failures, mistakes, intended acts, Scripture tells us that we are stubbornhearted, wanting only our way. But if we pause to listen to God, if we open our mouths (and our hearts) to confess our sin, God will fill our emptiness with forgiveness and hope. Let us pray together, as we say, All: Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. Silence is kept In your mercy, forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, that we may delight in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.

With Hophni and with Phineas - Their priestly acts a fraud-- Their actions served their appetites instead of serving God. We run aground when we are found inviting these things in. There s Sloth, of course, and Gluttony, Our Anger, and Greed, the lure of Lust, Pride and Envy, the Seven Deadly Sins! Sermon: Seven Deadly Sins - The Sin of Gluttony The Rev. Dr. Katherine G. Killebrew RESPONSE TO THE WORD *Litany of Faith Leader: Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy. They were haughty and did an abomination before me. (Ezekiel 16:49-50) People: By what we eat and what we drink, we make a statement about who we are. Help us to be shining examples of generosity and love. Leader: Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory and stretch themselves out on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall, who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp and like David invent for themselves instruments of music, who drink wine in bowls and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph! (Amos 6:4-7 ) People: Forgive us Lord, we have fed ourselves and forgotten those who are hungry.

7 Leader: Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. ( Philippians 3:19 ) People: We have made a god out of food. It has become entertainment rather than an opportunity for community and nourishment. Leader: Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags. (Proverbs 23:20-21 ) People: Help us to live and consume simply, so others may simply live. Leader: Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? (Matthew 6:25-34) People: Food and drink are a gift, but we make it a problem. Like all of your gifts, O God, help us to use them to your glory. Leader: Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple. (1 Corinthians 3:16-17) People: Help us to know how to treat our bodies with dignity, wisdom and modesty. Leader: So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31) People: and let us always remember that our bodies are a gift from you O God. Thanks be to God. Amen.

Greed, envy, sloth, pride and gluttony: these are not vices anymore. No, these are marketing tools. Lust is our way of life. Envy is just a nudge towards another sale. Even in our relationships we consume each other, each of us looking for what we can get out of the other. Our appetites are often satisfied at the expense of those around us. 13 Session Highlights Andy Wilson is serving the church as custodian while Chris Keely is out during his surgery and four week recovery. Thank you Andy, and prayers to Chris for a speedy recovery! Mark it on your calendar: Rally Day will be September 14th! Don't miss the Pancake Breakfast to start the day at 9:00! Our new Seminarian, Noha Khoury, will begin her work with us and the Youth group starts that night. Stewardship Campaign excited to have the Pony Express kicked-off on October 19th and will culminate on November 2nd. The Property committee qualified through the State of NJ for a free energy assessment for our heating usage. We will be using a new electric provider that will give us a reduction in costs as well. Pastor Kate is working with other Presbyterian churches in the area to offer combined "Grow Group" Bible studies starting in October. We have pulled over $40,000 from our reserve funds for our operating expenses for the first half of this year. We need every one to support our church financially. Grace is free but church ministry isn't!!!

14 FROM YOUR DEACONS Its summertime and the kids are home from school that means no more school lunches. St. Paul s Food Pantry has a tremendous need for cold cereal, tuna, canned meat, peanut butter, jelly and mayonnaise. PLEASE HELP! CPC Directory Don t forget to pick up your copy of the new Summer CPC Directory. There are several copies in each mail slot in the mail box outside of the lounge. Officers, yours are in your office mailbox. Thank you! Please check the flower book in the Narthex and sign up to dedicate the flowers in the church to honor, or in memory of, a loved one. Flowers are needed for 8/31, 9/28, 10/5, & 10/12, HELP WANTED! We need help over the hot summer to care for our CPC gardens. There is a hose by the driveway, if you can help water the flowers, or weed and/or trim the bushes, please contact Louanna Sills (louannasills@comcast.net) or

15 Deacons Back Pack Collection Once again we are collecting school supplies to fill back packs to help children from financially struggling families start off the school year with the supplies they will need for a successful academic year. Donations needed by August 31st. 16 Equal Exchange Coffee -Always Available By choosing Fair Trade coffee you enable small-scale farmers to support themselves, their families and their communities. When you purchase it through the Presbyterian Coffee Project, you are directly supporting the Presbyterian Hunger Program's essential relief and development work around the world. Last year, Presbyterian congregations and communities across the U.S. purchased 107,425 pounds of fairly traded products from Equal Exchange. As a result Equal Exchange made a $16,113 donation to PC(USA). To learn more about the Presbyterian Coffee Project, go to equalexchange.coop/pcusa.
