2 Page Two First Sunday of Lent February 26, 2012 LENTEN DISCOVERIES The Cavalier Poet s Pulpit Robert Herrick ( ) was a scion of turbulent times. The English Civil War beheaded a king (Charles I) and divided a country. Religion was a major factor in the strife. Two forms of Anglicanism were at odds. One was Catholic-leaning, high church and loyal to the monarchy. The other was puritanical, Calvinist-inspired and advocated parliamentary democracy. These parties were dubbed Cavaliers and Roundheads. Cavaliers were chivalrous, flamboyant in dress and manner, and committed to the senses. Roundheads - - so-called because of their short, bowl shaped hair-cuts - - were soberly attired, dour, and iconoclastic. They were known for their denial of the senses and for inventing bad, bland English food! Robert Herrick was no aristocrat, but he was Cambridge-educated, loyal to king and country, and an ordained Anglican priest. He was the vicar of Dean Prior in Devonshire. He was abruptly ejected from Dean Prior in 1647 after the Roundheads gained ascendancy in the Civil War. Robert Herrick was a true Cavalier. He survived the Commonwealth of the Cromwells. He wrote lyric poetry, and dedicated it to the Prince of Wales, the future Charles II. That association helped to restore him to his vicarage and the benefices of Dean Prior. Herrick wrote more than 2,500 poems. Most of them extolled sensory beauty and the evanescence of life. One might say that they seem a bit racey for a celibate vicar. The theme of Carpe Diem fit his classical education and his cavalier viewpoint. But Siezing the Day - - did it create a conflict with the values of the Church and Eternity? In his most famous poem, To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time, he utters what sounds like an formula for hedonism: Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying; And this same flower that smiles today, Tomorrow will be dying. But, for all his emphasis on the now, Herrick is more complex than it may first appear. He is a preacher who is a poet. He is not the dirty vicar of Monty Python infamy! Robert Herrick sounds like Horace in the Country, but can also sound like Quoheleth or Isaiah. It may not be a giant Lenten Discovery, but it is enlightening to read his To Keep a True Lent. Is this a Fast, to keep The larder lean, And clean, From fat of veals and sheep? Is it to quit the dish Of flesh, yet still To fill The platter high with fish? Is it to fast an hour, Or rag d to go Or show A downcast look or sour? No; tis a Fast to dole Thy sheaf or wheat And meat, Unto the hungry soul. It is to fast from strife. From old debate, And hate; To circumcise thy life. To show a heart grief-rent, To starve thy sin, Not bin; And that s to keep thy Lent. Herrick sounds like a Cavalier Poet in the pulpit. He proclaims the substance of Isaiah 58! Is this the manner of fasting I wish, of keeping a day of penance: That a man bow his head like a reed, and lie in sackcloth and ashes? Do you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? This, rather is the fasting I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, braking every yoke; Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and homeless; clothing the naked when you see them, and not turn-ng your back on your own It is amazing how Herrick, the author of lyrics celebrating country life and customs and toasting various ladies, could preach the Word of God so accurately, and yet be true to his philosophy! It is no contradiction. But, like other Lenten Discoveries it is a surprise! -Fr. Luczak

4 Page Four First Sunday of Lent February 26, 2012 SPIRITUAL LIFE LENT WEEK I (Light a candle and/or have a crucifix with you as you pray.) Scripture: Jesus said to him, Away with you, Satan! For it is written, Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him. Reflection: Prayer is central to the Christian experience. A Christian life is not sustainable without it, because growth in the Christian life is simply not possible without prayer. Growing in character and virtue, learning to hear the voice of God in our lives and walking where he calls us all require the discipline of prayer. And it is not enough simply to pray when we feel like it. Prayer requires a daily commitment. Many people fail to establish a daily habit of prayer in their lives because they approach it with the wrong expectations. Consciously or subconsciously, most people approach prayer expecting it to be easy. The truth is, prayer is perhaps the most difficult thing we will ever do. From time to time, we may get carried away by a moment of inspiration in our prayer, but for the most part prayer is hard work work well worth doing, but hard work nonetheless. You don t become a great athlete by training only when you feel like it and the saints did not become such fine ambassadors of God on earth by praying only when they felt like praying. In each case, a daily discipline is required.i cannot imagine a life without prayer. I don t know how people survive in our crazy, noisy, busy world without the sanctuary of prayer to renew and refresh them. There are many reasons to pray and many ways to pray what is critical is that we make an effort to create a daily habit of prayer in our lives. Meditation: What are my prayer habits? Why do I pray? Have you asked God in prayer what do you think I should do? Am I living the life you have called me to? Prayer: Loving God, guide my every move that I may act in your name and by your will. Let me be attentive to your word and listen for your voice within the deepest reaches of my heart. May my prayer rise like incense in thanksgiving and praise. Amen. 8 Page Eight First Sunday of Lent February 26, 2012 Stanisław Benik of the Brotherhood of St. Roch is responsible for compiling and printing the service in Originally entitled Snopek Mirry (A Bundle of Myrrh), Gorzkie Żale was first celebrated by Fr. Szczepan Wierzkowski at Holy Cross Church in Warsaw. Gorzkie Żale has a three-fold structure. Each section has: 1. A meditation-hymn that reflects upon the Passion and Death of the Lord; 2. A lamentation that expresses sorrow for sins; 3. A sympathetic dialogue of the soul with the Sorrowful Mother. In Polish Customs, Traditions and Folklore, Sophie Hodorowicz Knab describes how much Gorzkie Żale has impacted the lives of Poles since the 18th Century. GORZKIE ŻALE Lenten Lamentations This Sunday 3:00 PM Gorzkie Żale (Bitter Lamentations) is a Lenten devotional service that grew out of Poland s unique culture and spirituality. In the late Middle Ages, Passion Plays were popular in Poland as they were in England and the German states. Since the majority of the population was illiterate, religious drama became a vivid and effective form of evangelization. Even today, a shrine like Kalwaria Żebrzydowska near Krakow draws large numbers of pilgrims for its Passion Play. To a large extent, the Passion Plays and popular hymnody are the provenance of Gorzkie Żale. Gorzkie Żale evolved from the planctus or lament of the Blessed Virgin sung during the Good Friday veneration of the cross. Oringinally in Latin, the Virgin s lament was translated into Polish and even regional dialects. Gorzkie Żale skillfully counterpoints the Passion of the Lord and the Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin. Father Wawrzyniec The souls and hearts of the Polish people responded to these beautiful lamentations until (the service) was being sung even in the smallest hamlets in the country. Throngs of (the) faithful gathered every Sunday afternoon in Lent to recall Christ s Passion Sung with deepest feelings and often committed to memory in entirety, Gorzkie Żale was sung by Poles in exile during two World Wars. Immigration saw the establishment of Gorzkie Żale in newly formed churches in both North and South America and the passing on of it from generation to generation of Polish Americans. St. Isaac Jogues Parish will offer a Polish-English Gorzkie Żale this Sunday, (Feb. 26) at 3:00 p.m. Fr. Zdzislaw (Jason) Torba will preside and preach. Soloists from the Lira Ensemble will lead the congregation in hymns and responses. Our adaptation of Gorzkie Żale will include traditional exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. ALL ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE. -Fr. Luczak

For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put people s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
