2 Page Two Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 11, 2007 CARNIVAL IN VENICE Behind the Masks Whatever the Venetian understanding of the mask is, there is something inextricably linking it to Original Sin and the loss of Eden. In Genesis 3: 9-10, Ah Venice... for the cynical and over-sanitized, it is a nightmare...a sprawling amusement park listing into its own sewage and decay! For the romantic, Venice is a vision only suggested by buildings and canals. Brackish waters and crumbling facades do not interrupt the tide of imagination. Pigeons and pollution do not despoil the dream. Time does not disturb the flow of impressions. Is it trite to say: Venice is magic? At Carnival time, the magic of Venice spreads like quicksilver. From December 26 until the dawn of Ash Wednesday, identities hide behind masks. The masks of Venice are works of art. There is the Portafortuna, a bird-like creation that promises good luck to the wearer. There are faces from characters in the Commedia dell Arte for those who can combine high culture and low humor. But, of all the masks of Venice, none captures the Carnival spirit more than the Casanove. Named after the handsome 18 th century womanizer, the Casanove can be porcelain white, gold or silver. It is finely featured and classically cold. Catching a glimpse of figures en casanove, their hooded capes billowing in the breeze is like a ghostly apparition! Does the casanove allow Dionysius to masquerade as Apollo? Is it Everyman yearning for lost innocence? Is it the Prodigal Son before the pig stye? Is it Adam hungering for forbidden fruit? Perhaps all of these! What is the true purpose of Carnival masks? Do revelers lose themselves or find themselves behind their masks? Whatever the conscious intent, Carnival masks do permit liberty and license to reign. Ugliness and excess can hide behind impersonal masks. Sometimes, they are an escape from confining stereotypes, a way to express hidden feelings. The Lord God then called to the man and asked him, Where are you? He answered, I heard you in the garden, but I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid myself. God's response to human shame was to clothe Adam and Eve in leather. Prudish popes invented the fig leaf. THE MASK IS OUR OWN CREATION. How very odd and ironic that the word person has an etymology in the word persona which means mask. In classical drama, the persona permitted an actor to be recognized in character and to be heard more clearly. Despite visual and acoustical benefits, the persona hid the person in a role. Thus, what made Art realistic could also conceal or distort reality. Masks get between life and us. They can also hide us from ourselves. Returning to Genesis 3: 9-10, I feel the ultimate Carnival quest could well be hiding from God. For many, it is unbearable to accept guilt, finitude, and alienation. The alternative is to create a false image an idol and to worship it. The mask, in its most extreme form, is the face of an idol and Carnival a counterfeit Eden. The reason so many hide from God is that they see themselves as gods, and don't like the competition. But none can escape the truth of guilt, loneliness, anger, or the relentless sweep of death! Theologian Ladislaus Boros observes: One day all masks must fall, all roles too must come to an end, all parts that we play before the world and ourselves... When that day arrives and masks fall, what will remain? Carnival offers no answer. Lent does. We have a choice to be an image of God or an idol, a persona or a person. THE CHOICE IS A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH. Fr. Luczak

Happy are they who hope in the Lord. As good stewards, firmly grounded in that hope, may we bear fruit in due season assisting the poor, feeding the hungry, and consoling the sorrowful whenever we have the chance. SPIRITUAL LIFE SIGN-UP FOR LENT SMALL FAITH-SHARING GROUPS Give yourself the gift of time for reflection and prayer during Lent. Small faith-sharing groups give you an opportunity to reflect on the Scriptures and/ or teaching of the Church and to discuss with others how this impacts your living the Christian life. Sign up in the Holy Family Room after Mass today or call the RE Office, 847/ this week. We have opportunities in the morning and evening for adults, who will meet here at the church for about 1½ hours each week. Please note that you do not have to be able to attend all of the parish mission in order to be in the small groups which will meet four times during Lent. On the six Sunday mornings of Lent we will offer a high school small faith-sharing group at 11:30 a.m. in the Ministry Center Conference Room across the hall from the RE Office. Holy Week Response forms are due in the RE Office by Monday night, February 12 th. If you do not turn a form in, you will be scheduled as needed. There is a meeting for ALL ALTAR SERVERS on Monday, February 19 th, at 6:00 p.m. in church. Please be on time as we have several things to review. SAVE THE DATE PARISH MISSION 2007! This year's PARISH MISSION will take place during the Fourth Week of Lent. If We Don't Speak, Who Will, led by Fr. John Puodziunas, OFM, will begin at the Masses the weekend of March A mission presentation will be Sunday, March 18 th, and geared to families as well as single households. Following the presentation we will have a potluck dinner in the parish hall. Mission presentations will also be held morning and evening March The presentation given each morning will be the one given in the evening as well. Mark your calendars and plan on being part of this special time of renewal and prayer! Please note that you do not have to be part of a small faith group in order to attend the mission. They are separate functions. For more information please contact Dee Stanton, 847/ , or any of the other Spiritual Life Commission members Betsy Garcia, Julie Higgins and Hilde Koziol. MASS INTENTIONS FOR 2008 The 2008 Mass Book will be opening on Thursday, February 21, Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. Therefore, the practice of combining individual intentions on a regular basis has ceased at St. Isaac Jogues Parish.

4 February 11, 2007 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Four SPIRITUAL LIFE COMMISSION The Spiritual Life Commission will meet this Thursday, February 15 th, at 7:30 p.m. in the RE Office. SACRISTANS The cleanliness and order of our Church, so that we have a warm and welcoming place to praise and worship God, does not happen by magic. It is maintained by the work and dedication of several people. However, our numbers are dwindling due to illness and we need your help. If you are willing and able to give one hour a month to help clean the church, vessels, etc., then the ministry of Sacristan might be for you. The sacristans work on teams one team per week and each team only serves once a month. They clean on Saturdays right after the Communion Service. To discuss your possible participation, please call Dee Stanton or leave a message for the Sacristan Coordinator, Helene Kowalik, at 847/ We appreciate your prayerful consideration! RCIA At the 9:00 a.m. Mass next Sunday, February 18 th, our two RCIA Candidates, who are already one with us through Baptism Gina and Steve will come before the community with their Sponsors who will give testimony to his desire and readiness to be received into the full Communion of the Catholic Church and hers to complete initiation with Confirmation and Eucharist. Later that afternoon they will participate in Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion at Holy Name Cathedral. During the service their names will be called aloud and they will go up to Cardinal George, who is presiding at this first of five services, and welcome them on behalf of the Catholic Church. This is a time of grace, growth and change for our Candidates, their Sponsors, and our Faith Community. Please continue to pray for them and to encourage them by your joy in living the Christian Faith through the teachings, traditions, worship and service of the Catholic Church. We look forward to the celebration of Confirmation and Eucharist, the remaining sacraments of initiation, with them at the Easter Vigil. FROM THE LITURGY BOARD The annual Lent Overview will be distributed next weekend along with materials from Operation Rice Bowl, the Lent program of Catholic Relief Services, which we have chosen to participate as a parish again for a second year. Last year the Archdiocese of Chicago sent $265,214 from the many parishes who participated in Operation Rice Bowl. Here at St. Isaac Jogues we collected over $6,000 and we hope to do as well or better this Lent. The six countries that will benefit from this year's monies will be Niger, Angola, Cambodia, Pakistan, Mexico and development programs in the United States. Please take a packet from those distributing them at the doors of the church next weekend. You may turn your alms in each week or collect your alms in your rice bowl throughout the season and give one check on Palm Sunday. More information will be in your packet and in the bulletin next week. Thank you for your support, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving so that others may simply live. READINGS FOR THE SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (green) I Samuel 26: 2, 7-9, 12-13, Psalm 103: 1-4, 8, 10, I Corinthians 15: Luke 6: ABOUT NEXT WEEK'S READINGS JEREMIAH: In this reading we hear of Saul and David. Saul became the first king of Israel, about 1,000 years before Christ. David, best known for slaying Goliath, was also a talented musician and became one of the favorites at Saul's court. Eventually the king grew jealous of the popular David who had to flee for his life. I CORINTHIANS: "Paul's converts at Corinth had a lot of questions about life after death, and on the last two Sunday's we've heard Paul addressing this. Today he uses a parallel. Just as we receive our human life from our ancestors ultimately Adam so we receive life from Jesus, who could be called the new Adam.

Dear Parishioners of St. Isaac Jogues: My name is Sharon Thomas and I have been a member of St. Isaac for the past 18 years. As a student in the RE program at St. Isaac s from 2 nd to 8 th grade, I first understood who Jesus Christ was, the foundation of my life today. St. Isaac s has provided me with the opportunity to serve Christ and the Church as an Altar Server, Lector, as well as Eucharistic Minister for many years. Currently, I have been blessed with the chance to go to dental school at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Now, as a third year dental student, I am very excited to finish up the last year and a half of school. After graduation, I plan to work in underserved areas across the United States. I have some exciting news to share with you! The Lord has given me an opportunity to participate in a healthcare/ outreach mission team with some of my classmates in Guatemala from March 10-17, We are going for two purposes: to spread the love of God and to provide dental treatment for those who have no source of medical or dental help. Along with this wonderful opportunity comes the responsibility of raising both prayer and financial support. I would be honored and so grateful if you could help spiritually by keeping this mission trip in your prayers and/ or financially through your generosity. Your donations would go toward helping us get to Guatemala as well as for much needed medical and dental supplies, such as antibiotics, food, pediatric medications, gloves, dental instruments, anesthetics etc. I am praying to raise $1,800 to meet these needs. I would be so grateful for anything you are able to donate. Checks can be made payable to St. Isaac Jogues. Donations can be sent to the Religious Education Office: St. Isaac Jogues Parish Religious Education Office C/O Mrs. Dee Stanton 8149 Golf Road. Niles, IL All donations are appreciated by February 12, Please pray that God will increase my faith to trust Him with all the details of this trip. Pray for our health and travel safety while in Guatemala as well as for the people in Guatemala that we will be ministering to. Thank you so much for all your support. God Bless. Your Sister in Christ, Sharon Sarah Thomas

7 Page Seven Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 4, 2007 Go Red for Women An American Heart Month Initiative What Are Your Numbers? My January 28 article spoke of this American Heart Association campaign to raise awareness about women & cardiovascular disease & to let them know how to take charge of their health & lower risks. As a follow-up to that feature, I'm writing today about NUMBERS! One way women (and men, for that matter) can love their hearts & lower risks by knowing their NUMBERS blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, BMI & waist circumference. For the most part, the higher the value, the more one may be at risk for cardiovascular disease, a heart attack or stroke. By knowing if you fit within the norms, you can feel confident continuing those positive behaviors that help to keep them in range or you can get a heads up & modify behaviors & NUMBERS so your likelihood of disease or an untoward event is lower. The American Stroke Association makes the following recommendations: Total cholesterol <200 LDL cholesterol (the bad one) Goals vary No heart disease w/ 0-1 risk factors: <160 Most people w/ 2+ risk factors: <130 People w/ heart disease or diabetes: <100 HDL cholesterol (the good one) By gender Women: 50+ Men: 40+ Triglycerides <150 Blood pressure <120/ 80 Fasting glucose <100 Body Mass Index (BMI) <25 Waist size By gender Women: <35 inches Men: <40 inches Finding out your NUMBERS is easy. Today (February 11) just happens to be Search Your Heart: Check Your Blood Pressure for Life Sunday. By stopping in Room 6 between 8:30 a.m. & 1:30 p.m., you can get a free blood pressure measurement. Also, complimentary checks are done at most of our area Senior Centers & local Fire Department stations. For a lipid profile (cholesterol, etc.) & blood chemistry tests (includes blood sugar), come to St. Isaac's Project Body & Soul: Wellness Screening on Saturday, March 24 or, better yet, make an appointment to see your family doctor & request them. In some instances reaching or maintaining these ASA-recommended norms is a matter of regular exercise & healthy eating. In others, dietary modifications & medication may be in order. Consult with your doctor as to the approaches that are best for you. To learn more, visit StrokeAssociation.org & goredforwomen.org or call STROKE or MY HEART. Be blessed! Pat Kellen, RN, BSN, FCN Parish Nurse Advocate Health Care/ St. Isaac Jogues SEARCH YOUR HEART... 9 February 11, 2007 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Nine AN INVITATION TO ST. ISAAC JOGUES INDIAN COMMUNITY There will be a special meeting on Sunday, February 25, after the noon Mass. It will be for members of our Indian Community. The meeting will be part of an outreach to the larger, new ethnic groups in St. Isaac Jogues Parish. We continue to meet with the Filipino and Polish Communities. Our concern is that, as we welcome diverse groups, we may respect and, indeed, learn from differences in culture and spirituality... that we may explore the richness of the Catholic Church... that we may find a strong sense of unity in our diversity. We recognize that our Indian Community displays a diversity within their diversity. Among those who attend Mass regularly are members of the Latin Rite as well as Knanaya Catholics and members of the Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara Rites. We also know that there are language differences and cultural differences among the Indian Community. We are grateful for the opportunity to get to know our diverse Indian Community better, to learn more about the gifts they bring to St. Isaac Jogues and how we may share faith and service of the Church. The Filipino Community There will be a Prayer Meeting on Saturday, February 17 th at 7:00 p.m. at the Santos house. Please call (847) for more information. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
