2 Page Two Fourth Sunday of Lent March 18, 2012 LENTEN DISCOVERIES The Jesus Prayer (Part II) Growing up in the Cold War 1950 s, things Russian became confused with the Soviet system. Atheism and Communism, the revolutionary spectre of Lenin and the totalitarian dictatorship of Stalin cast long, dark shadows that eclipsed basic freedoms and especially the open practice of religion. But there was another Russia - - a richly spiritual and complex Russia with a 900 year history. This Russia gave the world glorious icons, the fiction of Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Dostoyevsky, the music of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and many others. Some viewed pre-revolutionary Russia through the lens of nostalgia and romanticism. Others found a persuasive case for spiritual survival in the culture itself. For me, culture was a large part of the attraction, but not all. My college searching brought me to a small Byzantine-Slav Church called Christ the Redeemer. Its pastor, a Benedictine monk from St. Procopius Abbey, became a spiritual mentor to many and eventually was ordained a bishop for the worldwide Byelorussian community. Father Vladimir always followed the Liturgy with fellowship and an opportunity for questions about the Eastern Rite. The open forum addressed the liturgy, Sacraments and prayer traditions. It was at one such coffee and questions session that I learned about the Jesus Prayer. Fr. Vladimir showed us an Eastern prayer rope or chotki (in Russian). He also recommended reading The Way of the Pilgrim. Bishop Vladimir Tarasevitch Last week I mentioned The Way of the Pilgrim and its impact in the J. D. Salinger story, Franny. The pilgrim begins his spiritual journey when he hears St. Paul s injunction: pray without ceasing (I Thessalonians 5:17). He visits churches and monasteries, trying to understand what St. Paul means. Eventually, he is introduced to a starets (a spiritual father) who teaches him the Jesus Prayer While it has some variations in text, the basic prayer is LORD JESUS CHRIST HAVE MERCY ON ME. It is a Christian Mantra. Father Lev Gillet s introduction to the Jesus Prayer traces its origins to Mt. Sinai and Mt. Athos. Even though it has been distinctly monastic as a prayer form, it is by no means exclusively so. Fr. Gillet notes: The invocation of the Name may be practiced anywhere and at any time. We can pronounce the Name of Jesus in the streets, in the place of our work, in our room, in church, etc. We can repeat the Name while we walk. Besides that free use of the Name, not determined or limited by any rule, it is good to set apart certain times and certain places for a regular invocation of the Name. One who advanced in that way of prayer may dispense with such arrangements. But they are an almost necessary condition for beginners. Among the techniques associated with the Jesus Prayer is to accompany recitation and meditation with synchronized breathing. While not a sine qua non, breathing in while calling out to God and breathing out while asking for mercy is perhaps the most popular method. The Jesus Prayer is often compared with Hindu, Buddhist, or Muslim meditation because it is an embodied form of prayer using breathing techniques. St. Theophan the Recluse sees the Jesus Prayer in three stages: - - oral prayer (prayer of the lips) still external to the practioner - - focused prayer (prayer of the mind) identifying personally with the words - - prayer of the heart itself where the prayer is not what we do, but are. For Western Catholics, the Jesus Prayer should not be considered odd or exotic. It is a prayer akin to the Rosary and other chaplets. It can be an enriching Lenten Discovery for you as it was for me! -Fr. Luczak

What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. ALTAR FLOWERS CAN BE A BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE Parishioners are invited to decorate the altar with flowers in honor or memory of a loved one. There will be two arrangements each week. Your name and intention will be listed in the Bulletin. The cost of a flower arrangement will be $ After Pentecost, Altar Flowers will be available from the weekend of June 3rd through Thanksgiving Day, November 22nd. 4 Page Four Fourth Sunday of Lent March 18, 2012 SPIRITUAL LIFE PARISH LENT RECONCILIATION The Parish Lent Reconciliation Service will be held Saturday, March 24 th, at 11 a.m. in Church. It will include Scripture, music, examination of conscience, and individual confession and absolution. Confessions will be heard in English and Polish. As we near the celebration of the Holy Three Days and the renewal of our baptismal relationship with Christ, come celebrate the Lord s mercy and forgiveness! LENT WEEK IV (Light a candle and/or have a crucifix with you as you pray.) Scripture: Jesus said, I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind. Reflection: In a world obsessed with pleasure (fasting) may demonstrate the relevance of our spirituality more than any of the other spiritual disciplines. You and I were created to love and be loved, and as such we yearn to love and be loved. As long as men and women have this yearning, the practices and traditions of our faith will be relevant.it is often said that in our present age there is a poverty of love. But I would like to suggest that our culture is experiencing not a poverty of love but rather a poverty of self-possession. Our ability to love is directly linked to the level of self-possession that we have. In order to love, in order to put another before ourselves, we need self-possession. The person who has little self-possession thinks only of himself and constantly places his desires before the needs of others.the very act of loving is an act of self-donation, of giving ourselves to another. But in order to give ourselves, we must first possess ourselves. It is this selfpossession that has been massively diminished by the hedonistic ideas of our culture. Broken relationships, soaring divorce rates, relationships that stay together only for convenience, and dysfunction within even the healthiest relationships are just the symptoms. The disease is our lack of self-possession.all the spiritual disciplines that make up the incredible landscape of Catholic spirituality are designed in one way or another to restore our lost self-possession so that we can once again love God and neighbor and be loved the way we were created to be loved. Meditation: What can I give up today that will help me turn back to God? What demon in my life needs to be cast out? Will I take time for prayer and fasting this week to help me in my fight? What place will I give fasting in these final weeks of Lent? Prayer: God of perseverance and strength, I put my faith and trust in you. I know it is difficult to fast, but I will not give up. I will fight the good fight. I will finish the race. I will do all of this in your name. Amen. (above from Rediscover Lent by Matthew Kelly, c2011) ALMSGIVING Today s alms recipient is EYEsee an all student-run international health mission to the poor in Third World countries by donating eyeglasses. All eyeglasses collected during this year s drive will be distributed during health missions this year to some of the poorest countries in Asia, the Pacific Islands, the Caribbean, Central America and Africa. Stop in the Holy Family Room after Mass and visit with students from St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights who are here to receive your donations and to answer questions about EYEsee s work and mission. All donations need to be here by 12:15 p.m. Recycled eyeglasses can help thousands experience corrected vision. Give the gift of sight to the poor! Please check with your family, relatives, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. to see if they would have donations for you to bring in! Please note that they cannot accept monetary donations. Next week s alms will be split between Operation Rice Bowls in support of the RE Students Lent Project and Uncle Pete s Ministry which is special to our Teen Group. Uncle Pete is the gentleman from St. John Brebeuf Parish who works on behalf of the poor and homeless in Chicago and to whom the Teen Group gave the sack lunches they made. Your generosity and support of our young people are appreciated!
5 Page Five Fourth Sunday of Lent March 18, 2012 RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS At the 7:30 Mass next Sunday, our Elect, Anthony Green will go through the last of three scrutinies during which we will pray for him as he examines his life and asks the Lord to transform what has been death-like in his life and call him forth into new life. The Scripture readings at that Mass will be from Cycle A as the Gospel is very focused on the meaning and effects of baptism. Please continue to pray for Anthony as he journeys to the waters of baptism and life in Christ and with the Church. LABYRINTH WALK All are invited to participate in a meditative walk on a labyrinth (circular maze which moves you to the center and then back out) patterned after the one on the floor of the Cathedral in Chartres, France this Thursday, March 22 nd, 6:00-8:30 p.m. and Friday, March 23 rd, 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The labyrinth, painted on three pieces of canvas, will be in the Holy Family Room where low lighting and reflective music will serve to shape your experience of this prayerful walk. Only a few people walk at the same time and you go your own pace as you reflect and pray, bringing whatever you wish to the cross, which will be in the center of the labyrinth. You walk in stocking feet or with coverings on your shoes, if you need to wear them. Resources will be available and there will be a place for you to journal about your experience, if you would like to do so. There is no charge for this event. BLUE ARMY MASS The statue of Our Lady of Fatima, together with members of the Blue Army, is coming to St. Isaac Jogues Church this Thursday. Mass will be at 1:00 p.m., followed by a rosary procession in church. All are invited to come and join in prayers for our families, our country, our world, and to honor Our Lady. Come next Sunday at 11:30 a.m. to the Parish Hall and share your ideas and thoughts about what our Teen Group can grow to be! ST. JOSEPH TABLE THANK YOU Begin with a beautiful Mass complete with some music and readings in Italian, add a bit of excitement when the heat in the kitchen set off the fire alarm at the end of Mass, mix in the blessing and a larger crowd than last year, blended with lots of delicious pasta, bread, traditional foods, and desserts, laughter, family and friends, and generosity to those in need and you have St. Isaac Jogues Parish St. Joseph Table! Last Sunday God blessed us with a great day to thank Him and to honor St. Joseph for his love, example and intercession. Thank you to all who came to pray, to eat, and to enjoy! At the end of the feasting we still had plenty to share with the Carmelite Sisters in Des Plaines, the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters near Techny and Catholic Charities in Des Plaines. Thank you, St. Vincent DePaul Ministry for making the deliveries! We have a few expenses to pay using the donations we received for the preparation of the table, and then we ll be able to announce the gift that St. Vincent DePaul Ministry will receive as they assist those in need in the name of Jesus and the people of St. Isaac Jogues Parish. A very special thank you to all who gave donations or assistance for the preparation of the St. Joseph Table. For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put people s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
