All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, the one who fashions us, the one who heals us, the one who reforms us again and again. Amen. Let us confess our sin, calling for God's transforming power. We kneel as able or remain standing. Silence. Source of all life, we confess that we have not allowed your grace to set us free. We fear that we are not good enough. We hear your word of love freely given to us, yet we expect others to earn it. We turn the church inward, rather than moving it outward. Forgive us. Stir us. Reform us to be a church powered by love, willing to speak for what is right, act for what is just, and seek the healing of your whole creation. Amen. First Reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34 I will write my law in their hearts, says the Lord 31 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. 33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, Know the Lord, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. R Second Reading: Romans 3:19-28 Justified by God s grace as a gift 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For no human being will be justified in his sight by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21 But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24 they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26 it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. 4

Gospel: John 8:31-36 Jesus says, Continue in my word and you will know the truth 31 Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. 33 They answered him, We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, You will be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. 6

7 I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of Intercession Longing for God s will to be fulfilled among us, we pray persistently for the church, the world, and all people in need. Silence. 9 Offering Prayer Let us pray Amen. Great Thanksgiving The presiding minister greets the assembly and invites all present to give thanks. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy...we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Eucharistic Prayer 9

10 Lord s Prayer Gathered by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread and Invitation to Communion Speak to us, O Lord, in the breaking of the bread, and make us one with you. We sit. HOW WE COMMUNE: All are welcome at Christ s table, including children. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. Persons receiving only the bread or wine may be assured of the full presence of Christ in either element. If you or your child would like to come forward to receive a blessing instead of the bread and wine, please cross your arms over your chest to indicate this. Please approach the table as invited by the ushers and take a place at the rail. You may stand or kneel as you are able. You have the option of either receiving the wine from the common cup or an individual glass (please pick one up as you enter the altar area and it will be filled at the table). If you are receiving the wine from the common cup, please take the cup from the communion minister, drink from it, and return it to the communion minister. If you are unable to come forward for Holy Communion, please tell the usher and the Pastor will give you the bread and wine at your pew. We hope that you will fill out the yellow Welcome Friends card in your pew pocket or sign the pad in the pew and either drop it in the offering plate or leave it at the Welcome Place as you leave today. We hope to see you again soon! We practice an open table at Holy Communion. This is the Lord s table. It is made ready for those who love him and for those who want to love him more. So come, you who have much faith, and you who have little, you who have been here often and you who have not been here long, you who have tried to follow and you who have failed. Come, because it is the Lord who invites you. It is his will that those who want him should meet him here. You may also come forward to receive a blessing instead of the bread and wine. Please cross your arms over your chest to indicate this. Children of all ages are welcome in our worship services and will learn to participate at a young age if present. Small tote bags with quiet activities are available in the Gathering Area for their use. If your child needs to leave for all or part of the service, a staffed nursery for ages 5 (kindergarten) and under is located on the lower level and will welcome them during the 8:30 and 11:00 services. Children Worship and Wonder, for children ages 3-7, is offered during the 11:00 service during the school year, but is suspended today. On those Sundays parents are asked to accompany their children the first time they attend. If you have a prayer request you would like forwarded to our staff and Prayer Team, please fill out the blue card in the pew and place in the offering plate when it is passed.
