2 Page Two Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 15, 2013 OUR LADY OF SORROWS Where there is sorrow, there is holy ground. -De Profundis, Oscar Wilde On September 15th, unless it falls on a Sunday, as it does this year, the Church Universal celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The Feast was as much the outgrowth of intense Medieval devotion to the suffering humanity of Christ as it was the Virgin Mary s identification with the Passion. Theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar alludes to that identification in The Threefold Garland: The World s Salvation in Mary s Prayer: she suffers along with her Son, and in her spirit she experiences His Death. In art, poetry, and sacred song there is a unifying dialogue between the Suffering Son of God and His Sorrowful Mother. It becomes a seamless, shared Mystery. As the Mater Dolorosa, she is not only the Mother of Christ, but also the Mother of Sorrows. Traditionally, the number of the sorrows is seven. 1. The Prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:34-35) 2. The Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-21) 3. The Loss of the Child Jesus in Jerusalem for Three Days (Luke 2:42-50) 4. Mary s Meeting with Jesus on the way to Calvary. 5. The Crucifixion 6. The Removal from the Cross (The Pieta) 7. The Burial of Christ in the Tomb The last four sorrows focus directly on the Passion as described or implied by the Gospels. Since the 13th Century, the devotion to the Seven Sorrows has been promoted by the Church, and especially by the Servants of Mary (Servites). The Way of the Mother or the Seven Dolor Rosary are meditations on the Passion through Mary s witness and empathy. The Stabat Mater, translated At the Cross Her Station Keeping, was composed by a Franciscan Friar, Jacopone da Todi ( ). It was not only sung during the Way of the Mother, but also became a regular part of modern Stations of the Cross. The Stabat Mater, best known in simple plainchant, has been more elaborately arranged for choirs and orchestra by Haydn, Pergolesi, Verdi, Penderecki, and other great composers. The Stabat Mater became the sequence for the Liturgy of the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. That feast was extended to the whole Church in The unifying Mystery of Christ s Suffering and Death comes into its sharpest focus at the Cross. It is at the foot of the Cross that we meet life in death. As Jesus commends His Mother to John and John to His Mother, it is more than a symbolic adoption. It is a universal Nativity. In John, all believers are born again. Mary becomes the Mother of the Church. She is, for all of us, a Passover guide through the darkest and most painful moments of life. She is nurse and a remedy for what ails us, a compass when we have lost our way. She calls our name in the dark and searches until she finds us. All the while, she feels the sword of sorrow at our losses and a desperate emptiness when we are estranged from God. A modern poet, Catherine De Vinck, herself no stranger to suffering because of a severely handicapped son, has written a tribute to Our Lady. It has the credibility of one who has found herself at the foot of the Cross, but knows she is not abandoned. At the foot of the Cross or the bedside of her son, the poet and Our Lady are truly one in Mystery. Let me conclude with Catherine De Vinck s tribute to Our Lady.

3 Page Three Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 15, 2013 LADY come in haste to the heaving hilly country of our need come with hands cupped to the shape of our pain with feet like silver leaves on the path of our weeping. Come with linen and oil with the dazzle of all that is forged in fire and burns toward morning. Drive us out of our midnight cell where we fast on tepid water hard crust. Drive us in the open where the sun will sew our wounds with golden threads. COME LEAD US HOME. - Fr. Luczak THE SEVEN JOYS OF MARY PRAYER CELEBRATION On Sunday, October 6, at 3:00 p.m. in Church we will hold a Seven Joys of Mary Prayer Celebration. It is the day before the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary as well as Respect Life Sunday. The celebration will include beautiful art and music, readings from Sacred Scripture, witness talks from parishioners and prayers. The music will include chant, community singing, and meditations from our Music Ministry. Plan now to come to give glory to God and honor to the Blessed Mother during this time of prayer, joy, hope, and gratitude! FEASTDAY WEEKEND We will celebrate the Feast of St. Isaac Jogues & the North American Martyrs the weekend of October On Saturday, October 19, the actual feast day, parishioners have the opportunity to witness to our Catholic faith by praying outside of a facility that performs abortions, located on Elston Avenue, as part of the 40 Days for Life Campaign. We will be sharing this witness and service with St. John Brebeuf Parish as it is also their feast day. Sign up will take place in the next couple of weeks. The Solemn Feast Day Mass will be at 5 p.m. and will include Native American music by Mr. Bill Buckholtz. Following the Mass, 6:00-7:30 p.m. we will hold a Taste of St. Isaac Jogues down in the Parish Hall. At least eight groups will be providing tastes including American, Filipino, Indian, Irish, Italian, Middle Eastern, Nigerian, and Polish. Food and beverage tickets will be fifty cents each and tastes will probably be 1-4 tickets. Music and storytelling will feature Bill Buckholtz. Then the fun moves to the Holy Family Room where Patty and the Melts (Lisa Hall & family) will play, sing and encourage us to dance until 10 p.m.! On top of all this we will also draw the winning tickets for the PARISH 50/50 RAFFLE (are you in it yet to win it?) On Sunday we will have hospitality after all the Masses in the Holy Family Room. Come in for some treats and conversation. Invite former parishioners to join us for some or all of the feast day weekend activities. We are who we are as a parish community because of those who were here before us and who are here now! Pray for God s blessings as we give thanks for all He has accomplished through our parish and for the grace and strength to continue the mission of Jesus entrusted to us!

4 Page Four Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 15, 2013 Religious Education There will be a preparation meeting for Confirmation Year II families this Monday, Sept. 16, 6:45-8:00 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. The Candidates are to go to class as usual and will join us later in the evening with their catechists. Students who plan to participate in the Walk for Life need to let us know they are that night. There is another permission slip to be filled out to ride in a chaperone s car. If you have questions before then, please call the RE Office, 847/ Grade Six students will receive their bibles and a letter for their family in class on Monday night. Please read the letters carefully and please have your students bring their bibles to class each week. These bibles will also be used for the two years of Confirmation. We are wondering if there are any high school students in the parish who are baptized but for whatever reason have not yet received their First Communion and/or Confirmation. If that is true of you or someone in your family, please call the RE Office, 847/ , and let s discuss how we might work together to help you prepare and celebrate those sacraments! The First Reconciliation preparation meeting for students in Mrs. Winans class will be on Monday, Sept. 23, 6:45-8:00 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. At least one family member is to attend on behalf of each of the students. Home materials and calendar will be distributed and discussed. If you have questions before we meet, please contact the RE Office, 847/ We thank Jason and Lloyd, two of our Confirmation Year II Candidates, for working in the rooms cleaning tables, chairs and boards before the new RE season began! You were a big help! If you, or someone you know, have never been baptized, are a baptized Christian but want to learn how the Catholic Church lives it s life in Christ, or are a baptized Catholic but have not received Confirmation and First Communion, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults may be for you. It is a process of prayer, discussion, study, service and walking with other Catholics as you listen to what God asks of you and how you will respond. For more information, please call Dee Stanton, 847/ Your inquiry does not commit you to join! The 3+ mile walk will step off from Our Lady of Victory Parish in Chicago about 11 a.m. We will leave the SIJ parking lot about 10 a.m. and return about 1 p.m. We will not be staying for the lunch so that we can come back to SIJ and join in the San Lorenzo celebration after the Noon Mass. How can you help? Stop in the Holy Family Room TODAY or next weekend, Sept , to offer your prayers, encouragement and to give them a donation for the Women s Center. Their goal is to raise at least $750, which will provide the following to a pregnant mom Ultrasound test, baby layette, baby crib, crib mattress, car seat, 3-pack of baby bottles and a package of baby diapers. Last year, with your help, the Teen Group raised $1100 for the Walk for Life. Prayer for Immigration Reform God of the journey, God of the pilgrim, God who calls us to be a welcoming Church, We, the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago, ask your blessing as we seek to be led by your Spirit during this critical time for Comprehensive Immigration Reform. Send forth the light of your Spirit to guide our Representatives as they discuss immigration reform. Enkindle within them the fire of your Spirit to inspire them to vote for immigration reform that is compassionate, just, and keeps families together. We pray for families torn asunder by detention and deportation. Bless them, heal them, hold them in your heart that they may be reunited, that all may live free of fear. We join our prayers to that of the thousands across the Archdiocese of Chicago who, during this momentous time, are praying for wisdom and courage for our Representatives to do justly, act boldly and walk humbly with our God. May we always seek your justice, that we may walk in your light and mercy, warmed by the care and compassion of our neighbors. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. (Based on a prayer by Rev. Robert Oldershaw) PRAYER, FASTING AND ACTION FOR CONGRESS TO PASS IMMIGRATION REFORM The U. S. Senate has passed comprehensive immigration reform legislation by a large margin. The U.S. House of Representatives is currently considering whether to address immigration reform legislation that can provide significant relief to potentially millions of people and their families. Now is a critical time to contact your House members and urge them to pass common sense immigration reform. The U.S. Catholic Bishops, through the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), have urged Congress to pass immigration reform which: provides a path to citizenship for undocumented persons living in the United States; preserves and strengthens family unity as a cornerstone of our national immigration system; provides legal avenues for low-skilled immigrants to come and work in the United States; restores due process for individuals caught up in the immigration system; promotes efforts that will address the root causes of migration, such as poverty and persecution. In response to the invitation from the Office for Immigrant Affairs & Immigration Education we are asking parishioners to pray, fast, and/or take action this week of Sept Petitions will be offered at all Masses and we are asked to keep this in our personal daily prayers. On Wednesday Sept. 18 th, please call or send on-line postcards to your congressional representative and House Speaker John Boehner. Go to or call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at and ask for your representative s office. The message: please pass bipartisan immigration reform legislation that includes a pathway to citizenship and preserves family unity. We as a parish are also encouraged to fast for immigration reform on Friday, September 20. Your efforts to be part of this week of prayer, fasting and action (to the best of your ability) are appreciated! The Ecumenical Committee will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17 th, at the Rectory.

7 Page Seven Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 15, 2013 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although New Year s Day has been fixed firmly on January 1 for several hundred years, Labor Day has the feel of a great dividing line between leisure and routine. The pace of life has since picked up, and new schedules and commitments crowd us. In the background is God s call to consider the third commandment, still life-giving and binding, to make holy the Lord s Day by worship and rest. Jews see the Sabbath, Saturday, not so much as a day of worship, but as a day of rest, a day of renewing friendship with God by delighting in the beauty of creation and the joy of family and friends. It is a day for contemplating the wonder of God s creation, but not disturbing it. For Christians in the first three centuries, the Lord s Day, Sunday, was not for rest, but worship. It was a regular work day. People met before dawn, and after Eucharist hurried off to daily routines. Today we come to Mass, but many hurry off to essential work, not a day of rest. The Lord s Day is not the Sabbath, but we can enhance Sunday s ability to transform us if we consider embracing some Sabbath values: having a family meal, going for a walk in a beautiful place, making room in our lives to open ourselves more fully to holiness of life in Christ. 9 Page Nine Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 15, 2013 Who is My Neighbor? The Third Pillar of Islam: Giving Alms Zakat, the third pillar of Islam, involves not only giving alms but also purification of heart and wealth. The way of total submission to God is never a solitary path for a Muslim. What this means is that submission to God always requires responding to the needs of one s neighbors. A Muslim cannot truly claim total self-surrender to God if this does not find expression in genuine relationships with others. One of the ways this concern for others is explicitly manifested is through Zakat. Whit it is generally referred to as giving alms or helping others, Zakat literally means to increase one s blessings in the measure of how one shares with others. Sincere performance of Zakat is believed to purify the giver from personal indulgence to greet. The gesture of Zakat is not foreign to Christians who sincerely listen and abide by the words of Jesus, who promised overabundant return and eternal life (Luke 18:30) to those of generous heart, or from the words of Jesus disciple, who said, Charity cancels a multitude of sins (I Peter 4:8).
