2 Page 2 First Sunday of Advent November 29, 2015 ADVENT: Free Space For God space empty time, vacant corners of our lives. We justify that scientifically. Nature abhors a vacuum we say, and proceed to fill every nook and cranny with trophies, gewgaws and junk! It is a human sickness to hoard, but eminently laudable to amass great wealth. We may justify that with the wisdom of P.T. Barnum who said: Money is a terrible master but an excellent servant. But was it not the same Barnum who was truer to himself when he judged: There is a sucker born every minute? Running Better on Empty Sadly, Advent is an unpopular all but forgotten season. Its emphasis is on light, prophecies from the distant past, and waiting. Advent is countercultural. It challenges us to be quiet and empty. If we accept that, we have to struggle through a crowded, noisy world to find a refuge for contemplation. One of my favorite Advent meditations is from Caryll Houselander s The Reed of God. Ponder what she says about EMPTINESS. Emptiness is a free space...an openness that welcomes God into our lives. This year, set aside free space to look, listen, and respond in prayer. In emptiness discover deeper awareness. We were not made for the tyranny of telecommunication and the commandment To love Thy Selfie. Advent challenges us to press the pause button and put down the remote! Why not give Advent a chance this year? It is ironically true that spiritually we can run better on empty. -Fr. Luczak That virginal quality which, for want of a better word, I call emptiness is the beginning of this contemplation...it is emptiness like the hollow of a reed, the narrow riftless emptiness which can only have one destiny: to receive the piper s breath and to utter the song that is in his heart. It is emptiness like the hollow in a cup, shaped to receive water or wine. It is emptiness like that of the bird s nest, built into a round, warm ring to receive the little bird. The pre-advent emptiness of Our Lady s purposeful virginity was indeed like those three things. Caryll Houselander s lovely imagery is Advent plain and simple, but not so easy. We want to fill empty

Please bring new, unwrapped toys, books, etc. for youth (preschool-teen) to Santa s sleigh in the Holy Family Room the weekend of December 5-6. The gifts will be used for their Epiphany Celebration and for some of the children will be the only new gift they receive this Christmas season. Be sure to bring your children or grandchildren to visit with Santa after the 10 a.m. and Noon Masses and take pictures with him. Santa s elves of Women s Club Guild One will provide refreshments. FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION ADVENT WREATH LIGHTERS First Friday Adoration and Devotions in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary will take place in the church this week, 6-9 p.m. All are invited to join us in prayer as your schedule allows. The evening includes the Patriotic Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, the mysteries of the Rosary, singing, an extended time for quiet reflection and Benediction. ADVENT REFLECTION BOOKS The Liturgy Board invites you to light the Advent Wreath at the beginning of Mass at one of the weekend Masses during Advent. You need to arrive about ten minutes early and the instructions are few. Please sign up in the Holy Family Room TODAY if you would like to participate. Questions? Our December service project is to bring new, unwrapped toys for youth, preschool-teen, to give to our Sharing Parish in Chicago to hand out at their Epiphany celebration in early January. 4 Page 4 First Sunday of Advent November 29, 2015 ADVENT MORNING OF REFLECTION All are invited to join in The Dawn From on High Will Break Upon Us An Advent Morning of Reflection on Saturday, December 5 th. Gathering will be here at St. Isaac Jogues Church at 8:30 a.m. and Morning Prayer will be at 9 a.m. followed by presentations and discussion until Noon. The Advent Morning will be given by Pastor Lynne Morrow, Pastor Mark Wiberg, and Fr. Andrew Luczak. As we prepare the way of the Lord, we gather as Christians to learn, share and celebrate our faith in and love for the Word made flesh as well as some of our special Advent traditions and guides. All are welcome to this event which is co-sponsored by the John 17 Fellowship (ecumenical group comprised of our parish, Messiah Lutheran Church and Holy Trinity Church) and the St. Isaac Jogues Women s Club. There is no cost to you for the Advent Morning, but for planning purposes we do ask you to sign up in the Holy Family Room TODAY, call Hilde Koziol or contact the RE Office, 847/ or sijre2004, by Monday evening if you plan to attend. Many of them have been so effectively absorbed into our culture that their religious origins are hidden. Some of us will set candles in our windows tonight. The custom began in Ireland during the so-called penal days, extending from 1691 to the Catholic Emancipation in 1829 and beyond. There were harsh penalties and fines for not attending the government church. Priests were forced into hiding, but people were resourceful and determined in guarding their faith. At Christmas, Irish families, particularly in the countryside, placed a lighted candle in the cottage window and left the door unlatched, hoping that a priest might come by and celebrate the Christmas Mass for them. The possibility of the Mass coming into the family home gave rise to other Irish customs at the beginning of Advent. The cottage received a fresh coat of whitewash, the threshold was swept especially clean, and fresh curtains were hung in the windows. The house was scrubbed until it gleamed, including all the pots and pans, and all garments and table linens were laundered. The custom of the Irish window candle was so admired in Catholic Europe that it was widely copied there, and now finds a welcome in households that may not exactly expect a priest to wander in! Rev. 9 Page 9 First Sunday of Advent November 29, 2015 WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS? The Church wants to respond to and serve families, which are the reasons for the 2014 and 2015 synods in Rome. This year s Synod was entitled, The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and the Contemporary World. The Holy Father made sure it was not just a meeting for people to get up and talk about noting, or quote from scripture, but a time to truly reflect on the ordinary life of real people. The family is truly the school of humanity; it is critical for our existence and it experiences many challenges today. If we re really a domestic church, then we have to see the family as living together as the body of Christ, and it is a body of Christ in which there is ongoing conversion and a missionary spirit. Everything that is applicable to the Church as the body of Christ is also applicable to a family. The concerns about marriage and family life are most important. With that in mind St. Isaac Jogues Parish Pastoral Council invites you now, and in the months ahead, to read, reflect on, and respond to one of the questions from the synod. The discussions will continue and actions are being developed. Your input and suggestions will be brought not only to our Council but to the Deanery and Archdiocesan Councils as well. Please respond to either or both of these questions by December 1 st by dropping off your response at the rectory or the sacristy to the attention of Kathy Lord or Dee Stanton or ing SIJPPC8149@yahoo.com, or in person. Thank you for your participation! From the working document of the synod: The family is a place of gathering. And so, inclusion is a hallmark of its existence. Exclusion, then, contradicts the very nature of family life. In today s context, there are groups of people who pose a challenge to the inclusive nature of family. They call for special attention. Among them are the elderly, widows, those in the final stage of life, the disabled, and migrants. Special challenges with inclusion emerge in cultures that foster arrangements that contradict marriage or family life, such as: polygamy, marriages of mixed religion, cohabitation, marriage in stages, the birth of children outside of marriage, and the often confused role of women in society and in the family. How can the Church be a place which gathers all those who might otherwise be excluded, so that everyone feels that he or she has a home, a community of belonging? How can families become open families that welcome those who otherwise might not be welcome? Let us all be thankful for the gift of our vocation.
