3 L W / R August 26, S Y R A A R J R. V C. Y, P V A Pennsylvania grand jury report reveals another dark chapter in the history of the Catholic Church. The report covers the abuse of 1,000 identifiable children by 300 priests spanning over 70 years. The report which covers six out of the eight dioceses in Pennsylvania also indicted bishops who did not report the culprits to the authorities. The long and short of this report is that it is a hard time to be Catholic, Christian, or Clergy. The response from Pope Francis was swift. He issued a document indicating that no effort must be spared to put a stop to these abuses in the Catholic Church. At the closing of the World Meeting of Families in Dublin, Ireland, from August 21st 26th, Pope Francis will meet with some of the victims to pray and to talk with them. Bishop Thomas Olmsted (substantive) and Bishop Eduardo Nevares (auxiliary) have already cosigned a letter to all parishes in our Diocese of Phoenix, expressing a deep level of sadness and anger about the recent revelations. They have kindly requested parishioners to pray and fast for divine intervention on August 22nd, the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary and on August 29th, the Passion of St. John the Baptist. Additionally, other individuals around the world have expressed their angst at the revelations in Pennsylvania. This is not unusual, judging from the level of the disclosures. Addressing abuses within the Church should be paramount to the survival of the Christian faith in our age and beyond. The Church must be a safe place not only for children but for everyone who enters into it to find Jesus. Therefore, what would be the response of Jesus to such horrendous acts against his children? The answer is in Matthew 19:14, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. Jesus loves children and he advocates an open door for his children to enter into the Church and find him. The children have responded and found Jesus in his Church. They are eager to hear from Jesus and get words of eternal life. This is an excellent response based on faith. However, the recent revelations in Pennsylvania indicate of betrayal of trust by the shepherds entrusted with God s children. It can be likened to what God said to Prophet Ezekiel 34:4, You did not strengthen the weak nor heal the sick nor bind up the injured. You did not bring back the strayed nor seek the lost, but you lorded it over them harshly and brutally. These words indict the shepherds for not living up to expectation in feeding the sheep in their care. In the next weeks and months, we should continue to pray, asking the Father to heal the victims. Above all, pray for the Church at this dark hour. At the time of Jesus, controversies with Jewish authorities were common on many topics. Jesus had to ask, Does this shock you? By saying to the Jews that he was the bread of life, many of them felt offended and returned to their former ways of life. Jesus had to turn to the Twelve and ask them, Do you also want to leave? Peter bailed them out and answered on their behalf, Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God. Coming to Jesus affords us the opportunity to hear words of eternal life in spite of the abuses within the Church. For those whose spiritual life has been weak, they may find a reason to fall away from the Church. For those whose faith has been strong, they may feel offended and totally betrayed. Whatever the current situation in one s life, it is important to accept his/her feelings and work toward healing the soul. Just as the Jewish people who listened to Jesus and wanted to leave him, people reading the grand jury report from Pennsylvania may find their faith shaken and justifiably so. We find this reaction any time there is a scandal of any kind in an institution such as the Church. Joshua gave the people of Israel a reason to make the right choice. He said to them, If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today whom you will serve, the gods your fathers served beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are now dwelling. As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. These words are applicable to us today witnessing what the Church is experiencing from within. The strength of every Catholic, Christian, or Clergy should come directly from Jesus himself. Your relationship with Jesus should be like that between a man and his wife based on trust and love. Without love between a couple everything revolves on suspicion. However, with love comes an equal measure of respect. This bond benefits both, and creates an environment of harmony. St. Paul says, He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. For the Church and the family, the application of this report is the same. There is no place for abuse in the Church and in the Family. We ought to address cases of abuses and spousal violence. Since both male and female live in the world, it is possible to find the right harmony without hurt. A safe environment in the Church is a necessity for both the sheep and the shepherd. In the home, a safe environment makes creativity possible. Everywhere we go, God s children should be happy, as if being with Jesus. Bishops Olmsted and Nevares, therefore, offer us some hope: During this dark and painful time, there is also a strong need to look to the light and healing of Jesus. Healing takes time, but we can begin now. We need to address abuses fittingly. Keep praying! The U.S. bishops invite the faithful to join a movement of prayer and sacrifice for the protection of life, marriage, and religious liberty in our country. Serious threats to each of these have raised unprecedented challenges to the Church and the nation. When confronted with challenges, our Lord calls us to sacrifice and pray. See website above to learn more about how you can answer the Call.

5 L W / D August 26,

6 6 facebook.com/phxstpauls L W / S The week of Thursday, June 7th, parents from the children's choir closed the choir year by giving Ms. Lauri a small token of gra tude on a mug, displaying the choir's Easter picture (a ached) and the following message: Thank you for your leadership, graciousness, and the many blessings of faith, music, and love you have provided our community! You have built faith in our church and in our homes - our children regularly burst out in song with the music you have taught them! We are grateful to you and you are a blessing to us all! Love, The 2018 St. Paul's Children's Choir. For the Week of Aug 26 th Sept. 1 st First Reading The L, our God, protected us along our entire journey (Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b). Today s first reading from Joshua is familiar to many. Many have this quote from the reading on a wall hanging, cross or picture frame; As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. I can even mumble through the song s chorus now and then, especially when doing chores. The faith-filled people remember who saved them from Egypt and showed their gratefulness by saying they will serve the Lord! Being grateful is a free action which instantly results in a relationship and building block to community. In the case of this reading, the gratefulness results in a deeper relationship with God. We are not talking about being polite this is beyond. As Catholics, it is really from the grateful heart that we taste and see the goodness of the Lord. Gratefulness is a virtue at the center of evangelization. It is easy to spread the word on things that are awesome, great, special, different, transformative etc. Gratefulness is a feeling that is pleasing and is easy to share (evangelization). Have you ever shared something pleasing, such as new restaurant, new phone app or recipe? The Greek philosopher Cicero declared: Gratitude is not only the greatest of the virtues, but the parent of all others. Sometimes we think the littleness of a softly whispered thank you Lord doesn t have a profound effect on our relationship with God, but it does. Living in gratitude crushes the devil. It smashes to bits greed, self-concern, jealousy, entitlement, attachment to secular or worldly pleasures, judgements, and daily living in gratitude keeps us from sinning more. What is your gratefulness story? What did God do in your life that makes you so grateful? Did God provide a miracle? Did he protect your children? Are you sharing your story of gratitude? There are many ways to share the faith, a lot of them are in silent actions, so evangelization isn t about going out and being a preacher. It can be as simple as being a witness / role model of faith. There are 5 evangelization areas that the TLUGF campaign funds will support: (1) Newman Centers (2) Catholic Schools (3) Francis Mercy Fund (4) John Paul II Catholic High School and (5) Tuition Assistance. These are key programs where we share our Catholic gratefulness story, share our joy with others. We are dependent on God s graces to touch the hearts of the faithful so they will serve the Lord! Thank you for your pledge today! Respectfully in Faith, Sue Moravec, TLUGF Cabinet member 1st -Scam Alert! If you receive an odd, urgent asking you to buy a gift-card for Fr.
