3 L W / R June M H B B C C C S I L J B R. V C. Y, P V Celebrating the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ brings us to a deep reflection about Jesus. This teaching makes the Catholic Church unique in promoting love for Jesus through his gift of the Eucharist. At the Last Supper, he took ordinary bread and said, This is my body. He also took the ordinary wine and said, This is my blood. The two have come to remind us of the gift of Jesus and so we celebrate this feast with dedication and commitment to Jesus. Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, the body and blood has given us the reason to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist in a special way. At Mass, we re-enact the gift of Jesus at the Last Supper. We receive him body and soul including his divinity into our own souls. He feeds us. He nourishes us. He enriches our souls with his presence. And we feel his love in our hearts. This feeling transcends any other feeling in the world because we enter into the spiritual realms with Jesus as host and he refreshes our spirits to continue with life. Since we are in a journey to God, we need his support just like he assisted the people of Israel when they departed from Egypt to the Promised Land. Moses as leader of the people reminded them of the presence of God. He offered sacrifices of animals by sprinkling the blood on the altar. He said, This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words of his. Moses encouraged the people to obey God s commandments and live in his love. He erected twelve pillars to represent the twelve tribes of Israel so that this souvenir will remain there forever. It is an honor to view God s love for his people as an everlasting covenant that transcends Israel. This love reaches all the nations of the earth with a new Moses in charge of proceedings. Jesus is that new Moses who came to lead us to God. He completed his task of human existence and returned to the Father. But before he left, he gave us the gift of his true body and blood to remind us of his eternal presence. We celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist all the time to keep us closer to Jesus and remind us of God s presence in our journey to him. Just like Moses, Jesus leads us to the Promised Land only that this one is to eternal life where God endures. Jesus assures us of the Father s love through his act of surrender in the Eucharist when he said, This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many. Amen, I say to you, I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it new in the Kingdom of God. He also assures us of the Father s love when he invites us to drink of this fruit and renew ourselves until we enter into the kingdom that never ends. Today s celebration is the reason why every Catholic should be proud of our heritage. While other churches and assemblies do not lay emphasis on the Eucharist as much as we do, it is important we feel proud of what Jesus has bequeathed to us. Over the centuries, we have kept faith with our roots since the establishment of the Eucharist at the Last Supper, and we have not broken our promise to always remember Jesus sacrifice through the celebration at Mass. The priesthood is a direct representation of what the Eucharist stands for since there won t be any celebration without a priest. The two sacraments Sacred Orders and the Eucharist keep the Church in focus on our eternal journey without deviating away from the mind of Jesus. In fact, the nature of the liturgical celebration today reflects deeply what Jesus laid down and no one has the power to change it in the centuries ahead. It is therefore an honor for those who enter the doors of the Church to see the liturgical celebration of the Eucharist as an ancient act repeated today for our eternal salvation. Everyone should take this seriously and draw spiritual benefits for enrichment and refreshment. The lessons to draw from today s celebration though many center on one point: our love for Jesus. We need to love Jesus in the Eucharist and show reverence anytime we receive Communion in the Church. The society of today is losing the sense of the sacred because we do not imagine that Communion can change us or let alone affect our journey on earth. However, we do know that it is a strong support to our weak and feeble minds just like the Israelites experienced in the desert. By loving Jesus, we come close to embracing his support and love as assurances of his presence throughout the length of our earthly journey. Anytime we have this encounter, we should cherish it and enjoy it because it is a gift only for those who recognize its eternal benefits. The book of Hebrews says, For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of a heifer s ashes can sanctify those who are defiled so that their flesh is cleansed, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to worship the living God. By coming close to Jesus, we cleanse ourselves of all doubts about God s salvific plan through the blood of Jesus and not by the sacrifices of goats and bulls. We are therefore a holy people set apart for God s anointing at the table of love when heaven comes down to meet us in our low state. This new covenant is to be kept eternal without any breach by anyone and that is the reason why the Catholic Church is different from other churches and assemblies. Archbishop Fulton Sheen said, The greatest love story of all time is contained in a tiny white host. That white host is God s manifestation for your salvation. Do you love Jesus in the Eucharist? Keep smiling!

I NTERIOR CHURCH DOORS It is our ushers' responsibility to keep the interior doors of the church closed at all times. Those doors provide a sound barrier between people greeting one another as they enter and those who have already entered into prayer in our pews. The doors provide a physical barrier between the sacred space of the interior of the church and the secular space which is the whole world outside. Last, they provide a security barrier, at least a minimal amount of delay, between those inside and someone entering who may seek to do us harm... For this reason, the "Exit Only" doors which are located on either side of the nave will be kept locked during Masses which are in progress. (They will, however, be unlocked in between Masses.) Please help the ushers by never propping open any church door, especially the "Exit Only" doors and the interior narthex/nave doors. G LUTEN- FREE HOSTS UPDATE Gluten free hosts are now available for those who are medically certified to require them. Please see the sacristan 10 minutes before Mass. With occasional exceptions, our regular sacristans are: Sat 5:00 pm Collette McCormick Sun 7:30 am Carol Mendyka & Dorothy Mittendorf Sun 9:30 am Yamina Rojas Sun 11:30 am Jeanne Cosme & Jeanne Sours Sun 5:00 pm Sue Moravec You will be invited to come forward before the rest of the congregation and receive near the organ. Ushers will be available to assist at communion time. P RECIOUS BLOOD On this solemnity we focus our attention on the Body and Blood of Christ. We listen to the story of the renewal of the old covenant, which Moses sealed by splashing the blood of animals on the altar of sacrifice, as well as on the people. Jesus, whose blood is the blood of the new covenant, shed that precious blood on the cross, saving us from sin and promising us everlasting life. Blood is the life source that courses through our bodies. The precious blood of Christ is the life source for our spirits. Today may we, like the psalmist, offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, whose Body and Blood strengthen us to bring the Good News to everyone we meet. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. T REASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The origins of today s solemnity lie in thirteenth-century Belgium. In those days, people seldom received Holy Communion, and never from the chalice. A nun in a troubled convent, Juliana of Liège, devoted her life to stirring up love for the Eucharist, lobbying for a feast day to honor the Blessed Sacrament with Masses and processions. Juliana may have been inspired by the Ascension Day processions in nearby Bruges. Crusaders brought a treasure home to Bruges from Constantinople in 1204: a reliquary said to contain a cloth from Joseph of Arimathea with which he had helped prepare the body of Jesus for burial. The stain on the cloth was said to be the holy blood itself, and so the people of Bruges built a great basilica to house the relic. Bruges became a great center of pilgrimage because of this treasure, and the procession of the Holy Blood is still one of the greatest festivals in Belgium today. The bishop carries the relic through the narrow streets, and the people wear medieval costumes and act out scenes from the Bible. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

6 6 facebook.com/phxstpauls S / D Our Journey as Catholics is not yet complete God has much more in store for us! He calls us to step out in faith, to deepen our walk with Him and to bring others to an encounter of His love: to become Disciples and to Evangelize through our words and lives. Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted has laid out a comprehensive plan to accomplish this mission of evangelization, which gives each one of us the opportunity to engage in our faith by helping the church meet the extraordinary needs we face now we must respond! Together, we walk forward as a community of families that make up a parish and a community of churches that make up our Diocese. Together, we work to promote authentic discipleship and evangelization in our Diocese. Together, we join as one- and go forth in faith! Parishes across our Diocese are responding to the exponential growth we are witnessing in our own communities. This translates to improving our churches, expanding our facilities, strengthening our adult faith formation and evangelization efforts, and investing in the religious education of our children. Every community has unique needs and the Together Let Us Go Forth ~ Juntos Sigamos Adelante campaign supports those needs. Thirty-five cents of every dollar given to the campaign will be returned to the donor s parish. These returned monies will give pastors and parish leaders the opportunity to minister to the unique needs of their community. Building Up the Church, Starting at Home Our parish is where we encounter Christ: through the sacraments, and through our neighbors. For many of us, our parish is our home. Together, let us unite and support our parish family. From attending mass each week to learning about your faith in small groups, the parish is your family of faith. Made up of men and women of all ages and backgrounds, it is here where we encounter Christ in a powerful way, together. Together, let us join to stand up and support our parish communities. Permanent pews At St. Raphael, which sits in Glendale, a few blocks west of Arizona State University s west campus, the most pressing request was for permanent seating. Give us a pew that won t move when we sit down, parishioners said. Somehow, the folding pews, intended to be temporary, have endured 42 years of Masses with decades of funds dedicated elsewhere in an apparent if it ain t broke, don t fix it attitude toward stewardship. Funds will also update the patchwork linoleum tile flooring. It s cracking and dated at best. These cosmetic changes aren t vital, but will go a long way toward evangelization, explained Rusty and Carmen Dudley. The couple grew up in the Diocese of Phoenix and have spent 10 years at St. Raphael where they re co-chairing campaign efforts. It s going to make the worship space better than it is now, Rusty said. First-time visitors will be more likely to come back, the couple said, and young families a small but growing number, will be more inclined to get involved with sacraments and ministries. The Dudleys have a heart for and experience in junior high and high school ministry, so they respect that other elements of the diocesan campaign continue parishes youth outreach at the college level via the Newman Centers. There s something there for everybody to have a passion about, said Carmen of the campaign. There s something for everyone to go forth ~ juntos.
