3 L W / R / L R February 18, F S L N F N C R. V C. Y, P V The history of our world is filled with new beginnings. Archaeologists have discovered civilizations that existed but disappeared with no trace. Civilizations such as those of the Mayans or Aztecs dominated most of South America. The ancient Egyptians in Africa built massive pyramids but no one today can explain conclusively how they did them. The Persians had a great civilization as they fought to conquer the world. Also, the Roman civilization has left behind traces great architectural designs that cover territories from all over Europe, Africa and parts of Asia. The stories are similar across different civilizations. They have left mysteries that we can hardly solve in spite of our sophistications. However, the ruins and monuments remind us that people existed centuries and millennia before our time. In the bible, there are indications that the flood of Noah wiped out many civilizations. Biblical archaeologists are working hard to interpret what really happened to them. This effort is as hard as allowing a camel to pass through the eye of a needle because decoding ancient events takes more than intelligence. It requires wisdom from God to understand the nature of how the flood happened and how it applies to our existence as human beings. Can the flood of Noah repeat itself in a new dimension? The case of Noah s flood is a classical biblical event that proves the end of an era and the beginning of a new one. After the flood, God said to Noah and his sons, See, I am now establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you: all the birds, and the various tame and wild animals that were with you and came out of the ark. God s covenant with Noah signified a new beginning for him and his family. The destruction of the world was by water which flooded all the coastlines and valleys with destruction in its path. Only Noah, his family and his animals were saved. Those who mocked Noah were destroyed by the floods. God promised Noah that he won t Image: Edward Hicks ( ) Wikimedia Commons destroy the world by water again: When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the covenant I have made between me and you and all living beings, so that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all mortal beings. This promise by God has endured for ages since we have never had any flood engulfing the whole world. Natural disasters, regrettably, do occur today but no single event has engulfed the whole world like that of Noah. By assessing the flood of Noah from a biblical point of view, we can divide humanity into two: believers in God s eternal word, and skeptics of God s eternal word. Noah and his family were saved because they believed God s word and this made them start afresh. For those who refused to listen to God s warning of an impending doom, they died and returned to oblivion for not opening their hearts. While this event happened millions of years ago, the effect of Noah s flood is repeated in different ways across the world. The rise and fall of civilizations shows how human pride can bring us to our knees. Pride, therefore, is the beginning of self-destruction when humans begin to think less of God, and more of themselves. When we think of supplanting God, we miss the mark of God s plan. By attempting to eliminate God, the unthinkable happens consuming us due to our collective pride. The Church does not want us to be overwhelmed by pride. At baptism we made a promise to remain humble and obedient to God s laws and decrees. The Church s mission is to remind us to be loyal before the Day of Judgment. From the time of Jesus until now, the Church is working hard to save souls from unbelief and the deceit of the enemy just like it happened at the time of Noah. And the season of Lent is a new beginning for us to contemplate redeeming themselves before the final day comes. God in his infinite mercy will take us back to himself and remove the curse of sin over us. It is important we review our present lifestyle before the final flood sweeps us away into damnation. St. Paul made it clear in his preaching that the flood of Noah was a reminder to the world about God s punishment. Jesus even went to the spirit in prison to redeem them. Paul writes, In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison, who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water. This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. The coming of Christ is the ultimate sign of redemption that we can see how God loves us and cares about our eternal life. The message to all of us on this day is about repentance. Jesus himself gives us the reason for contemplating our eternal journey. He says, Repent, and believe the gospel. Believing God s eternal Word can save you in the present sense and in the eternal sense. Your baptism is an effort to enroll into God s plan toward your eternal journey. Anyone who does not follow God s plan puts themselves in harm s way like the people at Noah s time. Undertaking the Lenten observances refreshes our poor memories about our new beginning which God offers every now and then. The Mayans, Aztecs, Egyptians, Persians, or those ancient people did not understand the timeline of God s salvation as we do. But time is running out. The advantage we have over them is that we know too much. However, we disbelief far too much what God says. Noah s flood was real. The final cleansing of the world is coming soon so don t be a number in history, be a hero of your salvation. Make a new beginning with Jesus today. Keep praying!

4 4 L W / R MASS ORDINARIES FOR LENT 2018 AT ST. PAUL'S, PHX The links below contain recordings not made by St. Paul's or her personnel. They represent the best versions found on the web of use to our congregation. Please read the notes below each link about how these are being used here at St. Paul's. We extend our thanks to those who are putting their "best foot forward" out there on YouTube for the benefit of others! If you are reading this in print (as opposed to online), please visit our website where you can click the numerous live links shown below. PENITENTIAL RITE Here at St. Paul's, we are using Penitential Act #1, which includes recitation of the Confiteor. Then the Deacon, Priest or cantor will lead the sung Kyrie XVI with the assembly making a perfect echo in response. In the authentic version of Kyrie XVI (in fact, in most authentic Kyrie settings), the final response is different, and not a perfect echo. We will only be using perfect echo at this time, as shown in OCP s Breaking Bread 2018 on page 5, #4. EUCHARISTIC ACCLAMATIONS Holy XVIII: We will execute this just as it sounds here, with cantor intoning the opening word, "Holy." Found in OCP s Breaking Bread p.14, #9 Mystery of Faith: v=i5998k9pqyc&list=pldjf6f5fmt3fbox3vzvimfogz2hhj BJ1k In this YouTube video rendering, the priest makes a very precise intonation whereby the whole assembly may respond beginning with Save us, Savior. We would like to model this. However, actual practice here may have the cantor intoning Save us, with the assembly joining in Savior of the world, for by your cross and resurrection. OCP BB p.16 #12 Doxology & Amen: OCP BB on p.26 Lamb of God XVIII: In this YouTube rendering, the cantor only initiates the FIRST iteration while all continue singing through. Here at St. Paul's, we will render this with the cantor initiating EACH of the THREE iterations, with the assembly joining in you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us/grant us peace. OCP BB p.28 #14 DID YOU KNOW?... The GLORIA is not sung during the penitential seasons of Advent and Lent. This lends it great effect when it returns on Christmas and Easter. To hear the GLORIA that typically "goes with" the other Mass parts shown on this page, go to: OCP BB p.7, #6. This Gloria, as well as the other Mass parts on this page, is very often heard at our Diocesan Cathedral of Ss. Simon & Jude, and is our bishop's recommended "standard" for the diocese and at diocesan events. TODAY S READINGS First Reading God s covenant with Noah when he was delivered from the flood (Genesis 9:8-15). Psalm Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant (Psalm 25). Second Reading The water of the flood prefigured baptism, which saves you now (1 Peter 3:18-22). Gospel This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand (Mark 1:12-15). CHURCH DOORS God bless our volunteer ushers who are here at every Mass welcoming all who come to the celebration. They are always happy to open a door for you whenever they are available. Please be aware that it is our ushers' responsibility to keep the interior doors of the church-- the ones which separate the narthex from the nave (or the vestibule from the body of the church)-- closed at all times. This is not a trivial job. Those doors provide a sound barrier, minimal but necessary, between folks greeting one another as they enter and folks who have already entered into prayer in our pews. The doors provide a physical barrier between the sacred space of the interior of the church and the secular space which is the whole world outside (the narthex being a transitional space). Last but not least, they provide a security barrier, at least a minimal amount of delay, between those inside and someone entering who may seek to do us harm. That moment of delay and having to open up another door could give us an opportunity to stop someone with ill-intent before they reach our congregation. For this reason, the "Exit Only" doors which are located on either side of the nave will be kept locked during Masses which are in progress. (They will, however, be unlocked in between Masses.) Our ushers are not security guards, but the doors themselves are our help. Please help the ushers in their duty by never propping open any church door, especially the "Exit Only" doors and the interior narthex/nave doors. Please do your part to keep our doors closed which helps to maintain the integrity of our sacred space and the security of our congregants. Thank you!
