S V O Ever toy with the idea of singing at Mass, but hesitate to make the commitment to weekly rehearsals, group dynamics and tons of music? With Easter now behind us and Christmas still feeling far-off, the more relaxed days of summer are blessed with opportunity free from the pressure of holiday significance or looming deadlines. If you might enjoy singing at Mass but are busy or uncertain, you are invited to have a one-on-one conversation about singing "sometimes." We can discuss your ability and experience level, as well as your schedule, and gently explore the possibilities. You do not have to join a group or make a commitment. This is equally available to provocalists, armchair "American Idols," and everyone age three to ninety-three who'd like to try! Summer is a great time to just try something that's not already part of your routine. And unlike Joining the gym, it's painless and free! or call Lauri Hofstrom for more information. You're invited! 3 F. V R / V O June 18, R S M H B B C BREAD OF LIFE AND HUNGER IN THE WORLD R. V C. Y, P V Recently I was in Nigeria for my annual vaca on. I visited my family and friends and took some me to reminisce about places I knew before I came to the United States, close to ten years now. In fact, I even had me to go to the local market to observe business transac ons. From all my observa ons, the condi ons of living are difficult even for average working families. The cost of living is high and food prices hover above the means of the average family. Even as I went to Nigeria with my budget to cover my vaca- on expenses, I had to seek financial reinforcement because the condi ons were different from what I had believed. I le Nigeria and returned to the U.S., pondering this ques on; if working families who earn salaries struggle to sustain themselves, what happens to numerous unemployed families that do not earn any salary? The stretch of my imagina on could not offer any answers as I con nue my ministry here at St. Paul s. But this holiday opened my mind to understanding a li le of how families struggle to make ends meet. The survival struggle is real not only for Nigerian families but for others across the world. Many people suffer due to their poor economic condi ons, and they need manna from heaven in whatever form or condi on to survive. The celebra on of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is an opportunity to recall the miracles of Jesus during his public ministry. He fed the hungry and gave the mul tudes of people what they wanted, the food that nourished their bodies. He did not choose between the categories of people, rather he considered all as equal in his eyes and offered them what they wanted. Jesus said, I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. The gi of Jesus to us is His flesh for us to have life in abundance. The Catholic Church o en draws enemies from the teaching on the Eucharist. In prac cal terms, ea ng of human flesh is an enigma. Drinking of human blood is another taboo. The considera on of ea ng the flesh of Jesus and drinking his blood draws the ire of those who view Catholics as par cipa ng in cannibalis c rituals that benefit only those who understand the rite. Clearly to us who have faith, both the flesh and the blood of Jesus go beyond mere symbolism. Both represent the perfect gi of God sustaining us amidst the imperfec ons of hunger, depriva on, and neglect. For example, God allowed Moses to feed the people of Israel with manna in the desert. A er they complained of hunger and neglect, God told Moses what to do to resolve the needs of the people. They ate manna in the desert as they travelled towards the Promised Land. This gesture symbolized the future gi of God to us when Jesus transformed ordinary bread into his Body and wine into his Blood. These two represent life-saving gi s to us who live in the world at this present me. It means that God does not forget his people in whatever way and in whatever genera on. St. Paul preached about this gi of God to the Churches he visited. The night Jesus was about to be handed over to men, he took ordinary bread and said the blessing. He did the same with the wine. He transformed them into His Body and Blood, not as symbols but as the true substance of Himself. Any me we receive Holy Communion in the church we receive these true gi s given to us by Jesus Himself in remembrance of Him. The numerous people I met during my break in Nigeria expressed hope that though things have not been easy for them, life is a con nuous struggle towards change. Although their families find it difficult to keep up with the rising costs of living, it is God who will provide bread the next morning. As for the Chris an, an expression of hope remains part of the teaching of Jesus. When things were hopeless, he provided hope. When things became impossible, he transformed them into possibili es. And like Moses, he fed the people with manna enough to sustain them towards the Promised Land. So also, he will sustain every suffering family on the face of the earth. The message for today is simply to consider God s kindness to us as his offer of love. And since we enjoy his love, we should extend this to our neighbors who may be in need. St. Teresa of Calcu a said, If you cannot feed the world, at least feed one person. Keep praying!

4 4 S / P The Peter s Pence Collection has ancient Christian roots, linking back to the New Testament times when people would provide material support to those preaching the Gospel to distribute to those in need (see Acts 4:34-35, 11:29). Today the collection is the way we as members of the Catholic Church unite ourselves to the concerns of the Holy Father. Donations to this collection support the charitable works of Pope Francis for the assistance of those most in need. How Pope Francis Invites Us to Make the World Less Cold and More Just In his 2016 Urbi et Orbi address, Pope Francis reminds us, The Lord... enables us to see with his eyes of love and compassion those who hunger and thirst, strangers and prisoners, the marginalized and the outcast, the victims of oppression and violence. By opening our eyes to the suffering and injustice in the world, we can open our hearts to the call of Pope Francis that efforts be made everywhere to promote the culture of encounter, justice and reciprocal respect, which alone can guarantee the spiritual and material welfare of all people. How We Can Join Pope Francis and Be a Witness of Charity By supporting this collection, you support the charitable works of Pope Francis. Your donations are a witness of charity and help the Holy See reach out compassionately to those who are marginalized. Contributions to this collection provide assistance to victims of natural disaster, war, oppression. HOW TO HELP: PRAY Pray for the Holy Father as he reaches out compassionately to make the world less cold and more just, and for those around the world who are suffering and will benefit from this collection. SHARE As a way to spread the message of mercy and peace, share this flier with someone who might be interested and tell others how Pope Francis supports the marginalized. GIVE June 24/25 envelopes will be available in back of church this weekend and next. Please give generously to this collection, as a witness of charity, and give hope to those who suffer around the globe. 5 P A / F F / S June 18, Eucharistic Miracles Is a book that shares spell-binding stories and miracles that most of us have never heard of. This book contains detailed descriptions, testimonies, and photographs. Covering miracles from the 8th century to 1970, it also gives vivid accounts of saints whose lives were filled with Eucharistic phenomena. Readers have said: This book was an amazing collection of Eucharistic miracles! I could not put [it] down... If anyone ever had a doubt as to the real presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist, he/she should read this book. All Catholics should read this To have read this book changes how I view the Eucharist." Through the beauty and wonder of these stories, you will come to a new-found love for Our Lord and His indescribable gift.
