4 Corpus Christi Catholic Church Abortion in the Media By Fr. Chad King Last week I saw the movie Gosnell: The Trial of America s Biggest Serial Killer. It s about the true story of the murder trial of Kermit Gosnell, an abortion doctor in Pennsylvania, that took place just a few years ago. It was a great, sad, and true story which I encourage everyone to go see. I will try not to ruin it for those who haven t seen it yet, but allow me to speak on a few highlights of the movie. The prosecutor (a Pro-choice woman with five kids) began her remarks of the trial with, This trial is not about Abortion, it is about murder the murder of a woman, as well as six babies born alive. Then when she put another abortion provider doctor on the stand to witness to the horrendous and unsanitary conditions of Gosnell s clinic, the Defense Attorney cross-examined the witness and made the abortionist accurately testify to what happens in an abortion -at least what happens in Planned Parenthood clinics and other abortion clinics that are deemed safe by the Department of Health all across the country. Gosnell s clinic was purposely not inspected for over 30 years because it was in a poor neighborhood targeting poor black clients. So, the while the prosecutor did not make the trial about abortion, but rather murder, Gosnell s defense did make it about abortion. At first I was pleasantly surprised by this, but then I realized that the defense attorney could do that because he had the law on his side. Abortion is legal, and because it is legal, then in our society, it is deemed a good thing. Another insight was, that at the start of the trial, the Attorney General warned that they would be mobbed in front of the Courthouse by reporters asking for a comment, and that the court room would be standing room only due to the media. To their surprise, in the beginning of the trial, the reserved seats for the media were empty. No member of the media was present, at least not until a young blogger, who was only interested in the truth, blogged about a media cover-up. Indeed, there was (and is) a media cover-up. There are those who don t want other people to truly know what abortion is, but we have a right to know. Still today, there are people trying to prevent this movie from being played in theaters. Some theaters, even with showtimes advertised, have turned away viewers. So, I encourage you all to go watch it with all your family and friends. You have a right to know what abortion is and we must stand up for the right to know the truth. I watched it right here in Ahwatukee at the AMC on Ray Rd and the I-10. I also encourage you to think about where you get your news, especially Catholic news. If you rely on the non-catholic media, then don t be surprised that there is media cover-up, or, at the very least, a media bias. Sadly, many media outlets are not about reporting the truth, but rather, report the truth they want you to know. Now let me make this reflection a little more practical in our lives today, especially since we are preparing to vote, which you have a right and duty to do as a Catholic American. You also have an obligation under God to vote first as a Catholic, then as an American. I ask you to seriously think about whether you would vote for a politician who committed a serious crime. I doubt it. What if that serious crime was murder; would you vote for that politician? Hopefully not. But that is what has been done, and some people still do, when they treat abortion just as one of the many political issues we have opinions on. The prosecutor is absolutely correct it is not about abortion; it is about murder. It is Satan who has made it into only a political issue. However, the abortionist on the witness stand, as well as science, tells us that babies in the womb are real living people. Abortion murders those people, plain and simple. Even though people don t want to think about what abortion truly is, we must, because it is about murder. You have a right and an obligation to learn which politicians have passed laws that make it easier or harder to kill people. You have a moral obligation to vote to help prevent the murder of innocent people, and you will be held responsible, as it is a mortal sin, if you don t. Abortion is not a political issue, it is murder. Now, will you vote accordingly? Catholics in the Public Square As Catholics in the modern world, we have certain responsibilities to our nation, our families and ourselves. These can be a matter of considerable debate. Popular culture tells us that we shouldn't speak about religion and politics in the public arena. But what is our authentic role as Catholics in today's world? 6 Corpus Christi Catholic Church Rosary Round-Up WANTED: Rosaries of all colors, sizes, & materials Since October is the Month of the Rosary, we are collecting rosaries to be donated to the mission project, Educate the Congo. If you have extra rosaries that you rarely use and even ones that need to be repaired, please drop them off in the collection boxes in the back of the church. You ll be giving rosaries to those without any so that they can love and use them. Book of All Souls The Book of All Souls, located in the vestibule of the church, is available to enter the names of your deceased relatives and friends. The last day to enter names will be Wednesday, October 31. The book will then be placed in the sanctuary on All Saints Day and will remain there throughout the month of November in memory of our departed loved ones. This is a time to engage young minds and hearts during Mass as the children are invited to hear God s Word and participate in the Liturgy in a way they can more easily understand. 8 Corpus Christi Catholic Church The Future of the Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson has announced that once again this year, the Knights of Columbus set a record for membership with a total 1,967,585 members. Anderson went on to say that our future is not automatic, and our continued growth is not guaranteed; that we must bring younger men into our Order. The Supreme Knight added that our mission continues to involve families; to account for their spiritual well-being and to provide leadership opportunities for their service. At the start of our fraternal year, the Knights launched a new program model called Faith in Action. The name encompasses what it means to be a Knight of Columbus. It is our way of proclaiming that in today s world there are men who put their faith into action men who bring value to our communities and hope to our nations. Our Faith in Action program rests on the solid foundation of our Building the Domestic Church initiative. The idea is that the Catholic family has the same mission as the Church to pray together and to build up each other in the faith; to be a place of mercy, reconciliation, and love; and to take up Christ s mission of charity. The Knights of Columbus Corpus Christi Council has, for years, managed several Faith in Action programs. One example, we donate funds for the education of seminarians who seek to fulfill their calling by serving as chaplains in the military. We also have a Spiritual Reflection program, which we plan to expand in the future. Our Sacramental Gifts program provides children s Bible at all infant baptisms. We are contemplating an expansion of this program as well. Moreover, our annual Knights Kids program offers clothing for underprivileged kids. On our agenda for the coming year will be to launch new Faith in Action programs that compliment parish programs as well as new plans that are intended to make a difference in our parish and our community. Catholic men, 18 years of age and up are invited to join us in our mission to fulfill Christ s mission of spreading His gospel through Faith in Action. The Knights of Columbus: We help people. We change lives. We save lives. 8 Frequently Asked Questions How do I register? All Catholics living in the Parish area and regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does NOT make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage, and Catholic Education programs. Adults 18 + need to be registered separately from their parents in order to get married, have their own children baptized, or be Godparents or Sponsors. In order to be a Godparent or Sponsor or to receive discounted tuition rates at Catholic Schools, one must be a registered Catholic and active in the parish, which is indicated by use of contribution envelopes or the Online Giving program. Registration forms can be filled out in the Parish Office or via our parish website. How do I have my child Baptized? Before scheduling the date, please call the Office for a welcoming conversation with the priest. A preparation class is also required for parents prior to the child s Baptism and are offered once a month. How do I request a Communion Call or Anointing of the Sick? Please call the parish office at DO NOT WAIT until someone is near death to have the person anointed! Although Anointing of the Sick was once known as Last Rites, waiting until a person is near death could risk that person not being able to receive the Sacrament if he or she should pass away prior to the priest being able to arrive. Anointing of the Sick can only be administered while the person is still alive. How do I get married in the Church? The Diocese of Phoenix requires a NINE MONTH marriage preparation process. John Deg, Director of Married Life Ministries, will meet with you to explain the process, including when you will meet with the Pastor to set a date. Do NOT set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.
