C M C F 2, 2017 On Thursday, February 2nd, bring your candles to Daily Mass for the annual blessing! Many Catholics keep shrines or prayer-stations of some variety in their homes. In these special places in the home, a candle or candles are often burned during times of prayer. In the same way that icons or medals are blessed, it is traditional for these candles to be holy items, and blessed by the priest. The annual blessing of devotional candles takes place on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple, or "Candlemas"-- "Mass of the Candles"-- forty days after Christmas. This marks the official close of the Christmas season on the Church calendar (as it was kept before the Novus Ordo). According to Jewish law and tradition, a mother and her newborn child present themselves to the community in the Temple for the first time since the baby's birth on the child's fortieth day of life outside the womb. The child is blessed and the mother purified by the Rabbi. This is exactly what took place with the child Jesus and his mother, Mary, so many years ago. The Rabbi who blessed them was the infamous Simeon, who was aged far beyond the normal human lifespan because was living out a prophecy that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. Although he was by then blind, when presented with the Christ child he exclaimed, "Lord, now let your servant go in peace; your word has been fulfilled!" The Church sings this prayer, known as the "Canticle of Simeon" (or "Nunc Dimittis") at the end of every single day. This is a regular part of the Liturgy of the Hours (Compline, Night Prayer). Bring your own devotional candles to be blessed at St. Paul's Daily Masses on Thursday, February 2nd at 7:00 and 8:30am! (Note: Candles do not need to have any specific composition, such as beeswax, to be used in home-devotions.)

3 F. V R / A F F January 22, FEAST OF THE CONVERSION OF ST. PAUL DIVISIONS IN THE BODY OF CHRIST R. V C. Y, P V The influence of Paul in Christianity is based on his missionary journeys around the towns and cities adjoining the Mediterranean Sea. His name will always be remembered among Christians because he is a role model in spreading the gospel of Jesus to distant lands far from Jerusalem. In his early life, Paul was not a Christian himself, but his encounter with Jesus on the way to Damascus to arrest believers in the way, reformed him. He became an apostle especially appointed by Jesus to preach to the Gentiles. He had major missionary journeys mainly to people in the Hellenistic culture. The popular towns and cities Paul evangelized are Corinth, Ephesus, Galatia, Philippi, Thessaloniki, Rome and many others. Eventually he wrote letters to these locations instructing the new converts about staying firm in the faith. He produced many spiritual writings about the faith and sixteen got a place in the bible. With his great achievements in evangelization, many earlier Christian leaders began to suspect the faithfulness of Paul as a new convert. Many thought that he was against the spread of the Christian faith even after his conversion. He faced oppositions of all kinds. Due to this attitude against him, St. Paul resolved to writing second letters to these divided communities with instructions about his work and keeping faith in Jesus who commissioned him. In today s second reading, there are instructions to the Corinthians not to divide their loyalty among the missionaries that instructed them about the faith. Some believers claimed to be for Paul, others for Apollos, yet others for Cephas or Christ. Divisions in the Christian communities bring untold hardships. Again, lack of structure in administration opens a way for the enemy to come in and destroy. Prophet Isaiah preached about the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali. These locations in history had seen distressful actions against the people. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. These words were hopeful for a people who had seen enough to scare them away from their inhabitants and render them as refugees. Yet, Isaiah prophesied that with time the Lord will heal their land and bring unity once again. The public ministry of Jesus around these towns brought the change that the people expected. Although between Prophet Isaiah and the time of Jesus, many events happened, the turning point needed was a change of attitude. For this reason Jesus began his ministry with these words, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. A new attitude brings positive life for the future. In order to avoid divisions, people need to examine their attitude and change their negative approach to life. Producing the same results perpetuates a circle of war or hatred giving way to unproductive behaviors. In his early public ministry, Jesus assembled a core team of trusted men to promote his love in the world. He gave them a vision and a mission, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. These men transformed the history of the world in their little efforts to evangelize. The message for all Christians is to remember that unity promotes the Body of Christ. Paul did not advocate divisions but rather oneness according to the example of Jesus. Unfortunately, those towns and cities Paul preached have either been lost to earthquakes or to the enemy of the faith. Working for Jesus means that all selfishness and hatred should be put behind to win souls for Jesus. The 12 apostles continued the work of Jesus and we presently have over 2.1 billion Christians, about 34% of the world s 7 billion people. Careful study of the dynamics in the world should spur us to unite to fight a common enemy as compared to fragmenting ourselves while the enemy takes over the land of Zebulun and Naphtali. If you don t stand for something, you will stand for nothing. Are you for Jesus or Apollos? Keep praying! A F F A BIG thank you to Bob Strahota for his two years of service at St Paul's in our Music Ministry. Bob will be missed and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors. VINCENT DE PAUL 5TH SUNDAY COLLECTION OF As a strategy to avoid paying for healthcare benefits, some companies have chosen to make most low paying jobs parttime. Many of the poor in our community work at part time jobs, with no benefits at all. Even a few days of work lost to sickness, of a parent or their child, can reduce the family s income enough to present a real, immediate problem. Sickness is especially likely to occur during these winter months. Transportation problems, like car trouble, can have a similar effect. Please share generously, from your heart, with the needy families of our community by contributing to our St. Vincent de Paul conference next weekend. As always, your donations will be used to help the poor with rent, utilities, food and other urgent needs, primarily within our parish boundaries. 5 P A / F F / S January 22, P A S C : J. 15 J 28 To the Glory of God The Childers Family. Adult Faith Formation: Day: Tuesday, January 24, 9:00 a.m. Conference Center Evening: Wednesday, January 25, 6:30 p.m., Rms. 5/6 On the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, (Jan. 25) ST. BLAISE NOVENA begins on The Feast of St. Paul! St. Blaise Novena DAILY PRAYER: St. Blaise, gracious benefactor of mankind and faithful servant of God, who for the love of our savior suffered many tortures with patience and resignation; I invoke your powerful intercession. Preserve me from all evils of body and soul. Because of your special merits, God has given you special graces to help those who suffer from ills of the throat. Relieve and preserve me from them, so that I may always be able to fulfill my duties and with the aid of God s grace, perform good works. I invoke your help as special physician of souls that I may confess my sins sincerely in the holy sacrament of penance and obtain their forgiveness. Amen. FIRST DAY: Lord Jesus Christ, you said that your disciples would only be worthy of you if they are able to carry their cross. You asked them to be faithful till the end, even if it means shedding their blood for your sake. You are pleased by the offering of life done by your servant St. Blaise. His death sealed his loyalty to you, and for this reason, you love your servant St. Blaise. O St. Blaise, Christians down the centuries have asked your intercession for their throat ailments, and you have proven your closeness to Jesus by the long list of miracles attributed to your name. We come to you with our petitions and problems hoping that your closeness to Jesus will enable you to help us. Listen then to our prayers and bring them to Jesus. Amen. Daily Prayer: (3) Our Father, (3) Hail Mary, (3) Glory Be St. Blaise, protect us from all throat ailments. If you would like to sign up for St. Paul s Perpetual Adoration Chapel, which is a 24-7 Chapel, please contact Adoration Lead Coordinators, Ann and Larry Manion, January 25th is The Feast of the Conversion of our Patron, St Paul In this prayer to Saint Paul, we pray for the grace to persevere in the Christian Faith. Saint Paul himself suffered greatly for his witness to Christ, even, in the end, giving his life in martyrdom on June 29, when he was beheaded outside of the gates of Rome. To Saint Paul for Perseverance O glorious Saint Paul, who, from being a persecutor of the Christian name, didst become its most zealous Apostle, and who, to carry the knowledge of Jesus, our divine Savior, to the uttermost parts of the earth, didst joyfully suffer prison, scourgings, stonings, shipwreck, and all manner of persecutions, and who didst finish thy course by shedding the SECOND DAY: Lord Jesus Christ, you predicted that your first followers would face terrible persecutions in the hands of the Romans. For three hundred years, your followers were massacred, beheaded and eaten by the lions, and the blood of the martyrs became the seed of Christianity. Your Church continued to grow. In the Church of Armenia, St. Blaise is the most prominent martyr. O St. Blaise, your courage to face death in the name of Jesus became last drop of thy blood: obtain for us the grace to accept, as favors bestowed by the mercy of God, the infirmities, sufferings, and misfortunes of this life, that we may not grow slack in our service of God by reason of these vicissitudes of our exile, but that we may then rather show ourselves ever more devoted. Amen. O God, who hast caught the multitude of the Gentiles by the preaching of blessed Paul the Apostle: grant unto us, we beseech Thee, that we who keep his memory sacred, may feel the might of his intercession before Thee. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. V. Pray for us, Saint Paul the Apostle. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray... the light of the Church in Armenia. As a bishop, you led the way inspiring others to be faithful to Jesus. You preached the gospel most effectively when you chose to die rather than betray your Lord and Savior. Share with us your courage that we may witness to Jesus presence in our world. Let us always love when we are invited to hate, to forgive when we are tempted to vengeance. Inspire us to do Jesus commands at any circumstances. Amen. Daily Prayer: (3) Our Father, (3) Hail Mary, (3) Glory Be St. Blaise, protect us from all throat ailments. THIRD DAY: O Lord Jesus Christ, you left the Eucharist as your constant presence in the world. Your presence though sacramental is real but we can only touch and feel you if our faith is strong enough. You commanded your Church to continue with this daily offering so that everybody may experience your presence. The Eucharist was the love of St. Blaise, as he hid from his persecutors, celebrating it in the cave along with some of his trusted friends. O St. Blaise, look kindly on us your devotees who at times find it difficult to experience Jesus presence in the Eucharist. We lack faith because we want to see in order to believe. We sacrifice easily our Sunday masses for other activities. Inspire us then to renew our faith in the Eucharist and to participate on it with full mind and heart, attentive to Jesus presence. Amen. Daily Prayer: (3) Our Father, (3) Hail Mary, (3) Glory Be St. Blaise, protect us from all throat ailments. FOURTH DAY: O Lord Jesus Christ, you commanded your apostles to put their trust on you when they were in trial before governors and kings. You promised them the Holy Spirit who would speak in their behalf and instill in them the courage that they need for the day. For this reason St. Blaise spoke fearlessly, declaring that he would not give up his faith in exchange for his life. O St. Blaise, give us your conviction that our Catholic faith is the most precious treasure that we have, and that we would never give it up for anything in the world. May your example instill in us the courage to live our faith and enable us to respond to the moral demands of our faith. May the love of Jesus make us stronger everyday. Amen. Daily Prayer: (3) Our Father, (3) Hail Mary, (3) Glory Be St. Blaise, protect us from all throat ailments. To be continued in Sunday, January 22nd, in next week s bulletin...

8 S aint Paul is one of the most important and influential of all the saints. Many of his writings are contained in the Canon of the Bible and have influenced the growth and development of the Church since the first century. St. Paul was originally known as Saul, and he was a Roman citizen and a Pharisee. He even presided over the persecutions of the early Christians and was present at the martyrdom of St. Stephen. However, Saul experienced a powerful vision that caused him to convert to Christianity while on the road to Damascus. He was duly baptized and took the name Paul. Paul traveled the world, first to Arabia then back to Damascus. He also visited Jerusalem to see St. Peter, the first pope and pay homage to him. During these travels, he preached ceaselessly, often drawing criticism and ire from those who rebuffed his message. Jews, in particular, hated his preaching as they saw him convert people to Christianity from Judaism. Eventually, Paul returned to Tarsus, where he was born. He preached there until he was called by Barnabus to come to Antioch. After a year spent in Antioch, a famine occurred in Jerusalem and the pair was dispatched to the city with alms. They accomplished this mission, and returned to Antioch. Paul and Barnabus then went forth on a mission to Cypress and throughout Asia Minor. They established several churches in their travels. After establishing his churches, Paul remained in communication with the faithful, often writing letters to answer questions and resolve disputes. The letters that have survived have become part of the Bible. It is believed that Paul wrote other letters, which were lost even before the Bible was established by the Church. Paul's writings are important because they provide good advice for how Christians should live. Paul traveled throughout much of Europe, particularly in Macedonia, Greece, and Italy. While preparing for a missionary trip to Spain, he was imprisoned in Caesarea by the Jews for two years. He traveled again, was shipwrecked in Malta, and was imprisoned for another two years for preaching in Rome. Despite these imprisonments, Paul continued to preach. Paul eventually made his way to Spain, then returned to the East, and finally returned to Rome once again. In 67 AD, Paul was arrested in Rome for a second time and this time he was beheaded under the insane Emperor Nero. According to John Chrysostom, Nero knew Paul personally. Paul is among the most famous, intelligent and influential of the apostles. There are some who argue that he was the leader of the apostles, but this is not supported by the evidence. Instead, he likely preached at the request of St. Peter, who was pope. St. Paul is the patron saint of missionaries, evangelists, writers, journalists, authors, public workers, rope and saddle makers, and tent makers. His feast day is on June 29 when he is honored with Saint Peter, although he is also honored on other days throughout the year, January 25, for his conversion, February 16, for his shipwreck, and Nov. 18 for the dedication of his Basilica. Reprint of an ar cle from Catholic Online Special Thanks to the extraordinary Mr. Mark Price for his performance, Saturday as SIMON PETER. Mark is shown above as our Patron, St. Paul, from his presenta on here last year.
