3 August 7, 2016 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 3 Liturgy and Worship 19 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflection FAITH IN THE MIDST OF CONFUSION Rev. Victor C. Yakubu, Parochial Vicar The World Youth Day 2016 was held in Krakow, Poland from July 26 July 31. Young adults representing their nations and institutions attended this event. The WYD was started by St. John Paul II in I watched as these pilgrims prayed, shared their faith, and mingled with others from different nations. In his homily, Pope Francis examined how the encounter of Zacchaeus with Jesus changed his life. Zacchaeus, although a wealthy man of great standing, learnt humility from Jesus and confessed his sinful past. Somebody needs an attraction to begin a friendship. The pope said, Something similar took place in the heart of Zacchaeus when he realized that Jesus was so important that he would do anything for him since Jesus alone could pull him out of the mire of sin and discontent. ty to encourage our youngsters to meet other struggling youngsters continued like them from other nations to build trust and form alliances for a better tomorrow. The news these days has lots of hurtful headlines, and this can devastate even the most righteous of souls among us. As Christians living in these perilous times, we must join our forces to pray for peace in the world and the continuous growth of our children in the path of true faith. Pope Francis urges the youngsters not to be ashamed of bringing their worries to the confessional for adequate direction. The choice is between the ways of the world and ways of Jesus. To keep ourselves from falling away from the faith, we need to constantly refresh ourselves by events such WYD, reading the Bible, Holy Mass, etc. The undisputable traditions of our faith make us unique among Christians and other non- Christians in the 21 st century world. T R Young adults need our attention for two reasons. The first is that they need our guidance in the ways of faith. The tenets of the faith should be taught to them without fail. Secondly, the future of our Church depends on how we treat these youngsters. They are the leaders of tomorrow. For them to lead, they must be rooted deeply in the ways of Jesus and the belief systems found in the Church. Above all, they must be taught to be upright in their dealings with the world. The world we live in has harmful ideologies, and so the youngsters must differentiate what s harmful and what is righteous. The first reading today from the Book of Wisdom teaches us to enliven our faith with righteousness to overcome our enemies. Ideologies in enmity to the faith today are numerous, but standing by the faith we profess can differentiate us from the harmful direction we encounter in contemporary times. You only need to watch around and see how different forms of ideologues keep enticing the youth, to snatch them away from the faith. When you re-read the second reading, you get a glimpse of the definition of faith. Abraham believed in God, and he obeyed him by leaving his land to an unknown location. Throughout his encounter, Abraham believed what God laid for him ahead. He had fears of the future, but he trusted God s leadership. Today we refer to Abraham as the father of many nations due to his faith and perseverance. What we need to teach our youngsters is to be tenacious in the faith. They have a long way to go in their journey of life. This journey is not to be undertaken alone. Jesus encourages them to not be afraid as the master of the kingdom is keeping an eye on them. For this reason, the WYD is an opportuni- First Reading Your ancestors waited in faith and courage for God s promised summons (Wisdom 18:6-9). St. Paul s Religious Education program is designed to supplement the teaching and example already provided by parents. We invite all of our St. Paul families and friends to watch the bulletin or the website for news about our classes as well as all Faith Formation programs and activities offered for adults. Religious Education Classes will begin this year with a Parish Time Sunday Kick Off on October 2, 2016 at 9:30 am in O Carroll Hall. We will continue with our classroom education for pre-k through 6th Graders as last year, meeting on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. Look for details to follow and an announcement for dates, program materials and open registration. If you are interested in sharing your talents with our program as a teacher, teacher s aide, classroom helper, help with parish time activities, please don t be shy, call the office. 5 August 7, 2016 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 Faith Formation Transfiguration - Feast day August 6th. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke s show Jesus divinity shining through his humanity. Some time before he died on the cross, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain probably Mount Tabor. There, while the apostles watched, Jesus face began to shine much more brightly than the sun. His garments became as white as snow. Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared, standing on each side of Jesus. A bright cloud gathered and covered the apostles with its shadow. Then the apostles heard a voice saying, This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him! (Matthew 17:5) Perhaps Jesus gave these apostles a glimpse of his divine identity in order to strengthen their faith in preparation for the ordeals of his coming passion and death. One thing I ask of the Lord; this I seek: To dwell in the Lord s house all the days of my life. To gaze on the Lord s beauty, to visit his temple.
