3 The book Pope Francis by Matthew E. Bunson (Our Sunday Visitor Publishing, 2013) is about Pope Francis as the title indicates. Bunson traces the events that led to the election of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, the first pope from the Americas. He took the name of Francis from St. Francis of Assisi ( ) the mediaeval saint known for peace negotiations during the Crusades. In Chapter Nine titled Grace Always Comes First, Bunson writes, At the same time, the cardinals choice reveals that a current of reforms the need for reform runs within the College of Cardinals and it led to Francis. He will help the Vatican government and offices to be truly at the service of the Petrine ministry so that the pope can better serve the Church (p. 167). The reforms that Bunson writes about are in three areas, namely; modernity and the new evangelization, global Catholicism, then reform and renewal in the Church. For many centuries the question of new evangelization has always moved to the frontline in the Church. For example, Pope St. John Paul II talked at length about the concept of new evangelization before the turn of the 21 st century. Pope Benedict XVI continued in the same philosophy. And Pope Francis now is saddled with the responsibility of promoting the concept of new evangelization via reforming the global Catholic outlook. Though these topics enumerated by Bunson seem interesting, the implementation of reforms should come with a warning. Adherence with traditional teachings of the Church should not be diluted on the altar of modernity, new evangelization or global Catholicism. The Church as the body of Christ needs both its ancient oxygen as symbolized by the office of pontiff and all the leaders of the Church in the modern world. Bunson s book would probably be written differently now that Pope Francis has spent over six years in the Petrine office. Just like the case of John the Baptist, the Church needs to hear prophetic warnings before embarking on modernization plans. In the season of Advent, we read different accounts from John the Baptist and other ancient prophets regarding departure from God s eternal laws. John warns, I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the things of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hands to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. This was the core message of John. He wanted the people to avoid the catastrophic judgment that was to come. In this way, he invited them to prepare for the coming of the Messiah, a savior, anointed and sent to the world by God. The attitude of John is not different from those of other ancient prophets. Their work revolved around advocating positive change towards a godly life by avoiding mundane actions that go against God s immutable laws. This concept has been around humanity for a long time. In the book of Genesis, we read about the story of Noah and how defiance against God s instructions brought misery and death on those outside the ark. Similar scenarios are explained by numerous prophets concerning how personal rejection of God s invitation to salvation can lead to self-destruction. The grand picture of this destruction is the final tribulation when the whole earth will be L W / R December 16, T S A R J W F T R. V C. Y, P V decimated by fury from above. John s work becomes significant when we view it against the backdrop of God s salvific plan. The crowd had to ask him, What should we do? His reply was clear, Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise... Stop collecting more than what is prescribed. Do not practice extortion, do not falsely accuse anyone, and be satisfied with your wages. The response of John may seem trivial but it appealed to the corrupt minds of his time especially those guilty of stifling the poor, living a reckless lifestyle and condemning religious duties. By listening to John s warnings, the people of Israel indicated interest in changing their lives and the evidence is in those who came forward for baptism. At a later period after Jesus did his work, Paul did the same by moving from town to town warning non-jewish peoples of the impending dangers ahead due to ungodly lifestyles. To the people of Philippi he says, The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God, then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. When the Lord comes judgement will commence and those who amend their ways will find peace and solace with their God. For refusing the warnings of the Lord, there will be destruction just like in the days of Noah. What Bunson s book dwelt on, therefore, are challenges facing the Church before the arrival of Pope Francis on the scene. His election by the College of Cardinals should assist us to understand the confidence bestowed on him for leadership at a period of great challenges. His task is a tough one. Six years after, we already sense the troubling cases challenging the traditional teachings of the Church. While these challenges are modern topics for consideration, the Church should not buckle under the guise of modernity or new evangelization. The warnings are many as the Prophet Zephaniah said, The Lord, your God, is in you midst a mighty savior; he will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love, he will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals. The warnings have been with us and the savior is here to renew us and refill our desire for freedom from the laws of God. Let us heed the numerous warnings given by God before we self-destruct. On a bigger scale we need to stand by God s immutable laws in spite of the agitations to be globalist Catholics in a Church filled with individuals with insatiable demands and different opinions. Bunson s book is a prayer for Pope Francis that God s grace comes first before anything. Indeed right now, the grace of God is on the Church and on Pope Francis. We need to pray more for him and the future of our Church because the present crusade is for the soul of Catholicism. The final tribulation may be far away now but the challenges of today are too obvious not to cause some worry even to the most hardened heart. Keep smiling! 8 8 facebook.com/phxstpauls S T, T T This Weekend, December 15/16, there will be a 2nd Collection for Capital Projects. There will be a St. Vincent de Paul 5th Sunday Collection the last weekend in December. For the Weekend of Dec 15 th and 16 th God indeed is my savior; I am confident and unafraid. Is 12:2 Advent 2018: Christmas Traditions The readings this weekend are exceptional in our Advent preparation. They are encouraging, reminding us not to fear or have anxiety because, The LORD, your God, is in your midst. How is your Advent journey going? It is tough out there with today s politics and scandals. I joined Twitter a few years ago mainly to read daily inspirational tweets that run the gamut from Fr. Greg Schlarb up to Pope Francis. Here is today s (12/4) tweet from Pope Francis, This Advent, make yourself small, make yourself humble, make yourself a servant of others, and the Lord will give you the ability to understand how to make peace. There are tweets from Cardinals, Bishops, and Priests, and some that follow groups such as the Carmelites & Catholic news. Sadly, following an inspirational tweet are the twitter trolls. You can imagine hateful comments from Catholics towards Pope Francis name calling for being too liberal or the beloved Cardinal Sarah (my fav) from Africa who receives similar hateful comments for being too conservative. It is interesting since Pope Francis & Cardinal Sarah re-tweet each other s messages to inspire all. This shows the solidarity of the Church. Although we have varying ways to explain our Deposit of Faith, (which is the Truth revealed by Jesus to Apostles to be handed down, preserved and proclaimed); we are never, ever separated from the Truth. We are ONE church completely united in Jesus Christ. In fact, the childlike approach to God is our best understanding and often why the simplest message can be the most influential in transforming our lives. Both sides have a unified message, to bring Jesus to all (evangelize) and we look to our Tradition for guidance. Imagine those early Christians, in a vast desert, evangelizing the Way of Jesus Christ, against all odds. Despite varying opinions about how to proclaim (even Peter & Paul had differences in opinion), the Apostles pulled together all money, shared among the widows & orphans, preserved the messages from Christ and trusting God, set forth on foot to spread the Gospel. As we journey through Advent, there are many family traditions, such as trimming the tree, baking cookies and setting up lights. In the Catholic Church we spell Tradition with a capital T and it refers to the mode of transmitting the Faith. It is rooted in Jewish tradition that aligns all of one s actions to transmit faith towards God. (Fiddler on the Roof fans? Tradition! ) Ponder this tweet from Bishop Andrew Fuanya of Cameroon, Africa on what he said at Synod #2018, In Africa the Churches are full because our traditional values still equate with the values in the Church,, adding We hand down the Tradition to our youth undiluted and uncontaminated, in unambiguous language. I pray you are handing down family traditions this Christmas, as well as handing down our Catholic Traditions. Advent wreath, Nativity with an empty manager and placing baby Jesus on Christmas Day, are examples of small t and capital T activities. Family traditions should reflect Catholic Traditions which include acts of kindness, giving and sacrifice, i.e. Discipleship. These activities are ways to hand down our Catholic Tradition and Deposit of Faith to bring Jesus (evangelization) for years to come. As you reflect on today s Gospel, John the Baptist s message, Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. As Jesus taught them, the Apostles exemplified both discipleship & evangelization, (note: it is the Acts of the Apostles), feeding the people to satisfy both temporal and spiritual needs. This is why the heart of TLUGF campaign is to provide a cloak (Discipleship) and spread the Gospel (Evangelization). Pray about our Traditions, the Catholic legacy of sacrifice and giving. If everyone at St Paul pledged, we could provide cloaks and hand down our Catholic faith and Traditions to generation after generation to come, right here in the desert of Moon Valley. Our job is to love others without stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy Thomas Merton Sue Moravec, TLUGF Cabinet member Thank You for your Generosity and Faithful Giving.
