3 L W December 24, F S A J A A R. V C. Y, P V Reading the Old and the New Testaments of the bible leads us to interesting stories about the power and glory of God. Within the people of Israel, God manifested himself at different times to manifest his glory. In the covenant with Abraham, God promised to prosper him, multiply him and his offspring. Abraham s side of the covenant was a singular requirement of total obedience to God. This is the subject of modern theology listing reasons on why the people of Israel fell short of the covenant and thus suffered the consequences of their actions. Was Israel faithful as God commanded? Each time the people of Israel deserted God and thought they could be by themselves, their enemies devastated them and their land. For example, we can say that the exile of 587BC was as a result of disobeying God s commands when the kings abandoned the ways of Yahweh and led the people wrongly. From King David around 1000BC to the reign of King Solomon around 970 BC, the people deviated from God to foreign gods. However, the return from Babylon from 515BC began the restoration of confidence in the laws of God. Thus, the work of the prophets reminded the people to return to God and be obedient because doing so guaranteed prosperity, peace, and security for their nation. In the New Testament, the story of the birth of Jesus restores that lost confidence from the exile. While the people expected the messiah to lead their nation toward prosperity, they forgot completely to reform their hearts and return to God. However, God manifested his power from the virgin birth to prove that his covenant was alive and active toward the total renewal of their brokenness. For this reason we know that the virgin birth was not a product of human regeneration, but a divine manifestation that exceeded their imagination. The revelations of the archangel Gabriel to Mary at Nazareth is an opening toward the fulfillment of God s total restoration for Israel. Yet, the virgin was careful to ask, How can this be, since I have no relations with a man? The reply of the angel gives us an idea of how this could be, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. Mary was bewildered by this revelation of God s supreme power that allowed her to conceive not by human means but by a divine process. This turning point in human history still baffles not only us who believe today but even our critics who deny the concept of the Incarnation. The same skepticism of today existed even before the birth of Jesus. But God predicted through the prophets that a child will be Image : Annunciation by Titian - Wikipedia Commons born in the future from the Davidic lineage who will continue his kingship forever. Listen to what God told King David via Nathan the prophet, I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm. I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever. God did not cancel his promise to Abraham but continued it through King David. The incarnation is from his bloodline and the kingship of Jesus, therefore, is an everlasting one. At this point, we come face to face with the reality of the celebration of Christmas; a reminder to us of God s infinite love for the world. The more we move away from the first birth of Jesus at Bethlehem, the more critics downplay the importance of this event. However, the reality of this birth remains important in understanding the connection we have with the virgin birth not only as Christians but as people influenced by world events. The message this day relates to our idea of God and his plans for the world. We need to refresh our memories with biblical stories to unveil God s power at various times in the history of the world. St. Paul writes, To him who can strength you, according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret for long ages but now manifested through the prophetic writings and, according to the command of the eternal God, made known to all nations to bring about obedience of faith, to the one wise God, through Jesus Christ. The difference in the timeline does not diminish God s faithfulness to the covenant since he sent Jesus to restore us back to his heart. Yet, we, like the people of ancient Israel deem God s power as insufficient to save us. God therefore requires total faithfulness from us by recognizing that he can do it and he will do whatever it takes to redeem us from the domination of darkness. Jesus is his Son sent to us specially. Our ignorance of his power only perpetuates our misery within the domain of darkness. Recognizing his supremacy brings us to appreciate the virgin birth today. John Piper in his book Think: The Life of the Mind and the Love of God says, What define us as Christians is not most profoundly that we have come to know him but that he took note of us and made us his own. Do not therefore take for granted God s plan to save you. Keep praying!

4 4 L W / R S N S! Mass Parts for Advent/Christmas It is customary that the tune of the Mass Ordinaries (Kyrie, Gloria, Holy, Mystery of Faith, Amen, Lamb of God) changes with the liturgical season. Advent marks the beginning of a whole new Church year; and so, our tunes will change to highlight this. You can hear the tunes on our parish website! Yes, you can listen, and sing along! We are very pleased to be implementing these ordinaries, composed together as the Mass of Saints Peter & Paul by Norman Gouin. Some of the tunes are familiar, some (such as Gloria and Holy) are brand-new. Thanks to technology, you can listen to them in the comfort of your own home and be better prepared to participate in the song at Mass! Bishop Nevares will preside and offer with other priests the Sacrament of the Sick for people with serious illnesses, chronic pain, or imminent surgery. People rightfully in need of anointing must register by Jan. 10. (Others do not.) Register online: I C D God bless our volunteer ushers who are here at every Mass welcoming all who come to the celebration. They are always happy to open a door for you whenever they are available. Please be aware that it is our ushers' responsibility to keep the interior doors of the church-- the ones which separate the narthex from the nave (or the vestibule from the body of the church)-- closed at all times. This is not a trivial job. Those doors provide a sound barrier, minimal but necessary, between folks greeting one another as they enter and folks who have already entered into prayer in our pews. The doors provide a physical barrier between the sacred space of the interior of the church and the secular space which is the whole world outside (the narthex being a transitional space). Last but not least, they provide a security barrier, at least a minimal amount of delay, between those inside and someone entering who may seek to do us harm. That moment of delay and having to open up a door could give us an opportunity to stop someone with ill intent before they reach our congregation. Our ushers are not security guards, but the doors themselves are our help. Please help the ushers in their duty by never propping open an interior door. Please do your part to keep our doors closed which helps to maintain the integrity of our sacred space. Thank you!

5 L W / D A L December 24, ADVENT AND Christmas masses To take place in church, unless specified in parenthesis. 4th Sunday of Advent Masses: Dec. 23, 5:00 p.m. and Dec. 24, 7:30, 9:30, & 11:30 a.m. Dec Christmas Vigil Masses: 4:00 p.m., 4:10 p.m. (Hall), 7:00 p.m., 10:00 p.m. Dec Christmas Day Masses: 7:30 a.m, 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 5:00 p.m. ATTENTION! CALLING "ALL YE FAITHFUL!" An explanation of what to do when Christmas Eve is on a Sunday: The USCCB Office of Divine Worship has supplied us with the following information: This year, the faithful have a double obligation on Christmas Weekend. There is an obligation to attend Mass on the 4th Sunday of Advent. Any Mass celebrated on December concluded before 4:00 p.m. on December 24 fulfills the obligation for the 4th Sunday of Advent. Any Mass celebrated on December 24 after 4:00 p.m. must be a Christmas Mass and fulfills the obligation to attend Mass on Christmas. Please also note that this year, New Year's Day (The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God) falls on Monday. Though it remains a Holy Day, there is no obligation for the faithful to attend Mass on that day. A postscript to the Bishops' message: Please be reminded that missing the Mass for the 4th Sunday of Advent requires the Sacrament of Reconciliation in order to be eligible to receive the Eucharist on Christmas Eve or Day. There are no confession times available between Sunday morning and Sunday evening on 12/24.
