3 L W December 10, S S A T C M R R. V C. Y, P V T he Rev. Greg Boyle, S.J., the American Jesuit priest and the Director of Homeboy Industries once said, Redemption is possible, and it is the measure of a civilized society. To overcome difficulties, we need leaders who inspire us to unite toward redeeming our national pride. Under moments of great difficulty, a bad word can send the wrong signal to people who desire motivation for change. The right words can ease pain, sorrow, and hopelessness leading to the creation of a new momentum for change. This kind of motivation is what Prophet Isaiah delivered to the people of Israel during periods of great devastation disrupting national life. With a bleak future facing them, the people yearned for a leader with courage and wisdom to inspire them for greater achievements. The Prophet Isaiah says, Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her service is at an end, her guilt is expiated; indeed, she has received from the hand of the Lord double for all her sins. These words from a man of God gave hope that the people of Israel needed toward a prosperous national life. The roadmap to changing the national life of Israel though futuristic, became realistic from that moment. It says, A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the Lord! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God! Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low; the rugged land shall be made a plain, the rough country, a broad valley. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. With these words, the inspiration to unite for change was only a matter of time because the prophet inspired the people and gave them hope for a brighter tomorrow. The departure from the past could signify a new dawn of change when all the valleys were levelled and every mountain and hill made low. Clearly, the light of God will then shine in the land once again, and unite the nation as one and indivisible. In continuation of the redemption by God, John the Baptist was chosen to proclaim repentance and forgiveness as a measure for change. He knew that the messiah was coming and he needed to proclaim him. His role was that of preparing the people for that moment of complete redemption and renewal for the centuries to come. The words of John the Baptist are interesting, One mightier that I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. These words of John the Baptist were spoken as reminders to the people of Israel to embrace change before the coming of the messiah. St. John the Baptist Pellegrino Da San Daniele Wikimedia In our Christian practice today, when we review the work of John the Baptist, we discover his total humility and commitment toward preparing the people of Israel before the coming of the messiah. John the Baptist is that messenger Prophet Isaiah spoke about: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Indeed, he accomplished his role as a dedicated messenger of God. He fasted for days in the desert and prayed for the redemption of Israel. In our Christian understanding, he demonstrated great humility and great determination to the cause of a better life for Israel as nation. Once God called him, he became a vital instrument in changing the course of world events. The world today needs leaders like John the Baptist exhibiting utmost humility in the cause of inspiring change in world events. The beginning of change is working from the grassroots as John the Baptist did by feeling the pain of people without judging them. Today s world leaders require a roadmap that levels all the mountains and hills that hold their nations down. They need to prepare the path for justice and peace creating wealth and food security. The ranks of the ordinary folks need inspiration without oppressing minorities such as women, children, orphans, or strangers. Unfortunately, there are many mountains and hills of injustice to cross before we can declare our collective redemption. The growth of different people under God requires inspiration and leadership that motivates change for good. Ignorance of other people s rights to survive and seek their self-determination should not be a leader s roadmap through repression or readjustment of constitutional codes that inspire hope. Countless leaders therefore, need to realign their values with those of their constitutional roles and inspire a new path that removes obstacles along the way of people. St. Peter gives us words of admonition, Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like a day. These words are a confirmation of God s long-awaited freedom that breathes on oppressive people after a tyrannical era. Surely, a people under a repressive leader need a John the Baptist to preach redemption. The Lord will vindicate his people and offer them a new period of relief from pain and oppression. Inspirational leaders, by choice, bring comfort and healing to a people devastated by years of oppression. Motivation requires no guns, no double-talk, or hypocrisy. It is as clear as day. Jesus is that model of hope and change. The message for the advent season is from John the Baptist s inspirational courage. He brought change to Israel. The Rev. Boyle again said, Don t forget, you are the hero of your own story. The final redemption is your own story. Do you understand the meaning of this phrase -- E Pluribus Unum? Keep praying!

Spend some time with Our Lord thanking and praising Him for the gift of His mercy. Try to perform your penance as soon as possible. AN ACT OF CONTRITION Oh my God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong And failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In His name, my God, have mercy. Amen.

6 6 facebook.com/phxstpauls C M / L W Sing a New Song! Mass Parts for Advent/Christmas It is customary that the tune of the Mass Ordinaries (Kyrie, Gloria, Holy, Mystery of Faith, Amen, Lamb of God) changes with the liturgical season. Advent marks the beginning of a whole new Church year; and so, our tunes will change to highlight this. You can hear the tunes on our parish website! Yes, you can listen, and sing along! We are very pleased to be implementing these ordinaries, composed together as the Mass of Saints Peter & Paul by Norman Gouin. Some of the tunes are familiar, some (such as Gloria and Holy) are brand-new. Thanks to technology, you can listen to them in the comfort of your own home and be better prepared to participate in the song at Mass! Visit: stpaulsphoenix.org ATTENTION! CALLING "ALL YE FAITHFUL!" What to do when Christmas Eve is on a Sunday: The USCCB Office of Divine Worship has supplied us with the following information: This year, the faithful have a double obligation on Christmas Weekend. There is an obligation to attend Mass on the 4th Sunday of Advent. Any Mass celebrated on December concluded before 4:00 p.m. on December 24 fulfills the obligation for the 4th Sunday of Advent. Any Mass celebrated on December 24 after 4:00 p.m. must be a Christmas Mass and fulfills the obligation to attend Mass on Christmas. Please also note that this year, New Year's Day (The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God) falls on Monday. Though it remains a Holy Day, there is no obligation for the faithful to attend Mass on that day. A postscript to the Bishops' message: Please be reminded that missing the Mass for the 4th Sunday of Advent requires the Sacrament of Reconciliation in order to be eligible to receive the Eucharist on Christmas Eve or Day. There are no confession times available between Sunday morning and Sunday evening on 12/24. ADVENT AND Christmas masses Will take place in church unless specified in parenthesis. 4th Sunday of Advent Masses: Dec. 23, 5:00 p.m. and Dec. 24, 7:30, 9:30, & 11:30 a.m. Dec Christmas Vigil Masses: 4:00 p.m., 4:10 p.m. (Hall), 7:00 p.m., 10:00 p.m. Dec Christmas Day Masses: 7:30 a.m, 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. 5:00 p.m. Interior Church Doors God bless our volunteer ushers who are here at every Mass welcoming all who come to the celebration. They are always happy to open a door for you whenever they are available. Please be aware that it is our ushers' responsibility to keep the interior doors of the church-- the ones which separate the narthex from the nave (or the vestibule from the body of the church)-- closed at all times. This is not a trivial job. Those doors provide a sound barrier, minimal but necessary, between folks greeting one another as they enter and folks who have already entered into prayer in our pews. The doors provide a physical barrier between the sacred space of the interior of the church and the secular space which is the whole world outside (the narthex being a transitional space). Last but not least, they provide a security barrier, at least a minimal amount of delay, between those inside and someone entering who may seek to do us harm. That moment of delay and having to open up a door could give us an opportunity to stop someone with ill intent before they reach our congregation. Our ushers are not security guards, but the doors themselves are our help. Please help the ushers in their duty by never propping open an interior door. Please do your part to keep our doors closed which helps to maintain the integrity of our sacred space.

7 P A, F F, S December 10, Who is the Virgin of Guadalupe? The Virgin of Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico. She is depicted with brown skin, an angel and moon at her feet and rays of sunlight that encircle her. When did she first appear? According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to an indigenous man named Juan Diego on Dec. 9, The Virgin asked that a shrine in her name be built on the spot where she appeared, Tepeyac Hill, which is now in a suburb of Mexico City. Juan Diego told the bishop about the apparition and request, but he didn t believe him and demanded a sign before he would approve construction of the church. On Dec. 12, the Virgin reappeared to Juan Diego and ordered him to collect roses in his tilmátli, a kind of cloak. Juan took the roses to the bishop and when he opened his cloak, dozens of roses fell to the floor and revealed the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe imprinted on the inside. The tilmátli with the image is on display in the Basilica de Guadalupe. What influence has she had on Mexico and the world? The appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe to an indigenous man is said to be one of the forces behind creating the Mexico that we know today: a blend of Spanish and native blood. Her dark skin and the fact that the story of her apparition was told in the indigenous THE VIRGIN OF GUADALUPE National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka Wikimedia commons language of Nahuatl and in Spanish are said to have helped convert the indigenous people of Mexico to Christianity at the time of the conquest. She is seen as having a blend of Aztec and Spanish heritage. Her image has been used throughout Mexican history, not only as a religious icon but also as a sign of patriotism. Miguel Hidalgo used her image when he launched his revolt against the Spanish in She could be seen on the rebels banners and their battle cry was Long Live Our Lady of Guadalupe. Emiliano Zapata also carried a banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe when he entered Mexico City in Pope John Paul II canonized Juan Diego in 2002, making him the first indigenous American saint, and declared Our Lady of Guadalupe the patroness of the Americas. How is the Virgin of Guadalupe celebrated? The day of the Virgin de Guadalupe became a national holiday in Mexico in Thousands gather each year on Dec. 12 at Mexico City s Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe to celebrate the patron saint s birthday. Over 800,000 people gather around the Basilica and bring candles and offerings to honor her. They also sing the famed Las Mañanitas. 9 C O / S December 10, Buckets of Hope for 2017 Hurricane Vic ms With the support of Bishop Olmsted, the Office of the Diaconate has developed a program called Buckets of Hope. This effort is to provide 5 gal. buckets filled with cleaning supplies to the victims in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. When disasters strike, money pours in to help first responders serve the victims. But for those who have begun to return to their shattered homes to repair and/or rebuild, life will never be the same. It is to these that we offer a ray of hope. Parishes are asked to collect the items listed below from Monday, November 20th to Wednesday, December 20th. The items are then to be delivered to one of the drop off parishes. We are asking for any of the items on the list one pail full of products or just one item; whatever parishioners can give to help us fulfill our mission of 500 completed buckets. For those unable to shop, checks made payable to the Diocese of Phoenix ( Buckets of Hope in memo line) will help defray cost of buckets and added products. We thank you for your assistance to those in need. A Bucket of Hope contains the following items: 1. 10 BISHOP BARRON S DVD Series CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players (2016) Tuesday morning Dec. 12, 9:30 a.m or Wednesday evening Dec. 13, 6:00 p.m. We are showing Bishop Barron s Pivotal Players: ST. THOMAS AQUINAS The Theologian The relationship of faith and reason is under intense scrutiny in an age beholden to the competing claims of fundamentalism and secularism. So called new atheists insist that the claims of religion amount to mere superstition, a retrograde holdover from a time long ago. Religious fundamentalists adhere to a strict, literalist faith that is often unmoored from logic or rational introspection and development. St. Thomas Aquinas anticipated these objections and trends, and demonstrated that to believe is to think and that the life of the mind is integral to life in Christ. In this episode of the series, CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players, Bishop Barron and his team travel to Rome, Florence, Paris, and all of the locations that played a significant role in the formation and vocation of St. Thomas Aquinas, which in turn formed the life of the Church. ONE -YEAR CELEBRATION OF ST. PAUL PERPETUAL ADORATION Dec. 17th after 11:30 a.m. Mass. Invite your friends and family! Special Guest Speaker Dcn. John Nahrgang Topic: Adoration. Luncheon Provided & More! We encourage ALL who Adore...even those who have stopped in to the chapel for minutes at a time or those are curious about Adoration and want to celebrate this ministry to attend our One Year Anniversary Celebration after the 11:30 am Mass, on Sunday, December 17th in O Carroll Hall. There will be a luncheon following Mass with Deacon John Nahrgang as our Eucharistic Mission Speaker. All are invited...bring your family and friends! Please take a look in back of the church (narthex) at our new media kiosk! This kiosk was generously donated by some of your fellow parishioners, in honor of St. Paul s Adult Faith Formation Program. CDs, pamphlets and books on current, interesting topics will be displayed including those of Dr. Tim Gray, who was a speaker at our December 2nd Mission! The kiosk will have a suggested donation for each item. You may donate cash or make checks payable to St. Paul Parish. Please consider sharing your CD once you've listened to it!" Note: These works by knowledgeable authors make great Advent and Christmas gifts or stocking stuffers, that reflect the true meaning of Christmas, and may serve as a counterpoint to secular goods.
