3 L W / R June 24, T N S. J B M P S R. V C. Y, P V Although human life begins in the womb, the infusion of the spirit is purely a divine act that can rightly be described as a miracle. The act of life beginning in the womb should not be a subject of debate because it is a reality far above our fantasy. Human conception or conception of any kind is a miracle. However, scientific knowledge gives us extra explanations on how this happens. We deeply appreciate what science can offer us though one aspect remains mysterious and perplexes our minds -- When does the spirit enter into the womb to make a human person body and soul? In the realm of religion, this is explained as the miracle of conception. While a man and woman participate in this process, it is God that infuses the spirit into a body and gives character to the person at birth. The next question to ask is what happens after a couple anticipates conception and nothing occurs. Do we have to blame them for their condition? This is where human reasoning becomes limited and thus covers it with explanations and high sounding terms. Infusing human life is purely the prerogative of God and no one can take it away from him. Human conception though explicable is better understood with the inclusion of divine intervention when all medical endeavors fail to provide answers. In the process of seeking answers medically, we please ourselves and open the realm of mystery for inspiration as illustrated in the circumstance of the birth of John the Baptist. As his parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth were open to conceiving a child without success. The reading says, But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren and both were advanced in years. The turning point came when Zechariah went to serve as a priest in the temple. The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at this birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. John will drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother s womb, and he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. This revelation to Zechariah is a turning point and his wife will smile immensely for answered prayer. Both of them waited for too long to reclaim their joy with the cry of a baby and the Lord is making it happen big with a bang. The circumstances of the birth of John the Baptist remind us that God works miracles when all human efforts have failed. Convincing people of faith could be an easy endeavor with stories from the bible and from the experiences of families. However, convincing non-religious persons is a herculean task because the divine approach is supplanted with a secularist mentality. By attributing conception and birth to purely human endeavors, we remove the sparkle of divinity that makes human life solely the responsibility of God. This does not lessen the efforts of a man and woman, but it only encourages us to look up to God for the insignia of approval. The Prophet Jeremiah says, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you. God knows every individual before conception, at birth and throughout life. No one can usurp the identity of another. In this case, God chose John the Baptist for a mission in his salvation story timeline. No one else fitted into this except John the Baptist. He will undertake his work in the future toward the liberation of Israel. Interpreting miracles biblically in a world pushed by secularity becomes a daunting task. The idea of explaining the encounter of Zechariah with an angel of the Lord is enough to draw criticisms from the skeptics because this does not fit the prism of logic. Furthermore, the idea of a woman conceiving without human contact or medical inducements can be a subject of comic relief because God does not make babies using Bluetooth technology, at least for now. The scenario of conception and birth therefore, is a delicate subject that reminds us to include God when we make plans for babies. This explains why Pope Paul IV in 1968 released the encyclical Humanae Vitae (On Human Life) to debunk secularist ideas about birth and conception. He wrote it specifically to reawaken debate about when human life begins, from conception or from birth? There is no amount of debate that can exclude the mysterious entry of the human spirit into a womb at conception and attribute this success solely to scientific findings since by itself it is limited by unexplainable force. In the realm of the divine, all laws are broken to prove to scientific research the power that intervenes from above. Understanding the nature of miracles is a spiritual experience that takes us into the dimension of God because he alone knows the world and what comes into it. St. Peter believes that the timeline of our salvation has been revealed right from creation through the prophets and up to Jesus. He says, It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you with regard to the things that have now been announced to you by those who preached the Good News to you through the Holy Spirit send from heaven, things into which angels longed to look. By accepting this dynamism of God as revealed to his holy ones, we gain wisdom that keeps us away from unbelief systems pushing secularist agenda. The message today is simple. Every individual s birth whether simple or complex, is the direct approval of God to achieve a mission. Every birth wipes away tears and creates a new level in the family. In the case of Elizabeth, he made her a mother, and Zechariah a father. These are roles given to them by God and destiny. Zechariah s faith in the angel is a direct acceptance of God s intervention in a difficult case such as conception and it should be a reminder to all couples to look up to God in season and out of season. Additionally, the push of secularist ideas should not diminish our sense of the sacred as applicable to the practice of religion. In every age, God manifests himself to us but it is up to us to interpret his intervention written in mysterious circumstances in our family histories. Remember the words of Tom Krause, Nothing is stronger than God. Do you think secular life is pushing into our sacred understanding of the world? Keep praying! 4 4 L W / R T F O T Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more profound celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the precursor of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory (Isaiah 49:3). John s humility I am not he was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. I NTERIOR CHURCH DOORS It is our ushers' responsibility to keep the interior doors of the church closed at all times. Those doors provide a sound barrier between people greeting one another as they enter and those who have already entered into prayer in our pews. The doors provide a physical barrier between the sacred space of the interior of the church and the secular space which is the whole world outside. Last, they provide a security barrier, at least a minimal amount of delay, between those inside and someone entering who may seek to do us harm... For this reason, the "Exit Only" doors which are located on either side of the nave will be kept locked during Masses which are in progress. (They will, however, be unlocked in between Masses.) Please help the ushers by never propping open any church door, especially the "Exit Only" doors and the interior narthex/nave doors. G LUTEN- FREE HOSTS UPDATE Gluten free hosts are now available for those who are medically certified to require them. Please see the sacristan 10 minutes before Mass. With occasional exceptions, our regular sacristans are: Sat 5:00 pm Collette McCormick Sun 7:30 am Carol Mendyka & Dorothy Mittendorf Sun 9:30 am Yamina Rojas Sun 11:30 am Jeanne Cosme & Jeanne Sours Sun 5:00 pm Sue Moravec You will be invited to come forward before the rest of the congregation and receive near the organ. Ushers will be available to assist at communion time. QUOTABLE QUOTES DECEIT Reason deceives us; conscience, never. 5 P June 24, St. Paul Parishioners Helping the Poor Through St. Vincent de Paul Connie Green had worked at the St. Vincent de Paul dining facilities, but felt a calling to become more involved after a talk given during Mass last year. She was welcomed into our conference at St. Paul and has now helped with 5 th Sunday Collections and our annual Food Drive, as well as being a part of home visit teams. Besides what she has learned at meetings and on the job, Connie has attended St. Vincent de Paul s formation classes, which she found very helpful and informative. She shared the following comments: I soon learned the Vincentians at St. Paul are an amazing group of hard working, dedicated, kind, generous and concerned individuals focused on serving those in need and so much more. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to continue to listen and learn and join in this mission of service. We hope you might consider if you also have a calling to share your time and talents living out the Corporal Works of Mercy, through St. Vincent de Paul. 6 6 facebook.com/phxstpauls S / D Brothers & Sisters in Christ A As missionary disciples, we are witnesses to Jesus not only to our community, but to our brothers and sisters of tomorrow. We are tasked by God, as every generation is, to be good stewards of the gifts that God has given us for both the present and the future. Many of us have experienced the beauty of the church in our local parishes, Catholic Schools or in the ministries of the Diocese. All of these were brought forth by the sacrifice, generosity and love of generations before us. Our families, friends and strangers of the past looked toward the future in serving us, knowing they may never meet us. Their faith and stewardship gave us 117 parishes/missions, 28 Catholic Elementary Schools and 6 Catholic High Schools bringing countless people to a personal relationship with Jesus. It is with this thought that I am pleased to announce a historic effort in meeting the needs of today and tomorrow with the Capital Campaign seeking to raise $100 million dollars to build a strong future for our Diocese. The following pages outline a plan to meet this vision, that was formed by listening to the leadership in our clergy, religious and laity of our diocese through careful prayer and discernment. Every element of this case has one end result in mind, To bring people to a deeper personal relationship with Christ, our Savior. I invite you to join me and my brother priests in this effort to trust in the Lord with all our Heart and be of one heart and mind to build up His Kingdom for the Glory of God! Join me, and Together let us go forth ~ Juntos Sigamos Adelante! Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted Dear Parishioners, As announced at our masses, St Paul Roman Catholic Parish is partnering with our Diocese to meet both the needs of our diocesan community and the needs of our parish family with a new campaign Together Let Us Go Forth. This campaign is designed to provide crucial resources for ministries, projects and organizations that bring hope and healing to the people of our Diocese. Our parish goal over five years is $1,804,943. St. Paul s share will be $631,730 and these funds will be used for: Funding the St. Paul Family Center To house the newly conceived Family Formation Program geared towards educating and supporting the entire family, Mothers, Fathers, and children grow in the faith A facility with an indoor activity court, Mass Media Resource Room, Music Room, Meeting and Recreational Room and Kitchen. Please prayerfully consider making a sacrificial gift to this historic effort. Pledge cards may be found in the pews.

8 8 facebook.com/phxstpauls S T, T, T Our vendors are gearing up. We are excited to be working with The Marshall Company as we begin the final phase of communication prior to production. The I s have been dotted and the T s are being crossed. We should have an installation date soon! As mentioned in the previous article, we should be looking at a late September, mid-october date for our carpet and pews. We will publish that information once it is confirmed and keep you informed of the progress throughout the summer. The Marshall Company also has a long time working relationship with Wholesale Floors, LLC here in Phoenix. Wholesale Floors is also getting us in the queue and working closely with The Marshall Company so that dates are confirmed and both parties are prepared to install at the same time. Thanks again for your continued patience, to all who voted on the color coordination and those who shared their talents and assisted over the years in this long awaited project. Sharing your time and commitment to the project with Fr. Bruno and the Finance Council is what demonstrates our engagement in unity as a parish and a beautiful place to worship. 2ND COLLECTION FOR PETER S PENCE IS THIS WEEKEND, JUNE 23/24 ENVELOPES ARE AVAILABLE IN BACK OF THE CHURCH. PLEASE PRAY Pray for the Holy Father as he reaches out compassionately to make the world less cold and more just, and for those around the world who are suffering and will benefit from this collection. PLEASE SHARE As a way to spread the message of mercy and peace, share this information with someone who might be interested and tell others how Pope Francis supports the marginalized. PLEASE GIVE June 23/24 envelopes available in back of church collection week. Please give as a witness of charity, and give hope to all those who suffer. By supporting this collection, you assist the charitable works of Pope Francis. Your generosity is a witness to charity and helps the Holy See reach out compassionately to those who are marginalized. For example, with support to the PPC and the assistance of the Vicar of the Latin Patriarchate in Amman, Jordan, a funding network has been created to respond to the needs of Immaculate Conception Parish School in Al Huson. The parish assists more than 800 children, many of whom are refugees from the war in Syria. Al Huson is located about 12 miles from the border with Syria; in recent years, the arrival of many refugees has heavily impacted the economy and daily life in the city. With help from university students in the parish who teach math, Arabic, and English, hundreds of children not in the school system are learning to read and write. A little mercy makes the world less cold and more just.
