3 October 12, 2014 Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time 3 Liturgy and Worship 28 th Sunday of the Year Reflection Open Invitation to Dine and Wine Rev. Victor C. Yakubu, Parochial Vicar Since my arrival in Phoenix, Arizona in 2009, I discovered to my delight how families love to gather together at table and eat just like in my native home country of Nigeria. Coming from the countryside, I always enjoyed home foods made by experienced hands. Here in the United States, I ve eaten all kinds of foods from sea foods to BBQs, from Mexican cuisines to Asian cuisine not to even mention the Italian pastas and Mexican burritos. Any time, I call my mum; her concern is whether I am taking good care of myself by eating good food. I always tell her not to worry. In Nigeria and most of Africa, it s an open invitation to eat at marriages, naming ceremonies and burials without a formal invitation. We do not estimate the guest lists. We rather leave it open, and anybody who comes is sure to eat what s available because every celebration is a village affair. I m aware that in the US it s a different culture, a new experience and a new way of life. I ve to admit, though, that the US is blessed country with rich food and rich cuisines. In the gospel of today, Jesus gives us another parable about the kingdom of heaven. All those invited guests by the king turned down the invitation to come to the wedding feast of his son. They gave different excuses and failed to show up. As the king became enraged due to their attitude, he decided to invite others originally not considered. He said to his servants, Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whoever you find. They brought in so many into the banquet hall. The celebration went on as planned. Food is the single human element that does not create enmity for many reasons. We need food to survive. We build friendship around food. I ve seen Mexicans eating in American restaurants and vice versa. As for me, I m not choosy when it comes to food; I eat what is set before me. All restaurants have seen my face. One of my professors told me that when you want to know a people, don t reject their food. That s exactly what I love doing, eating any food I see and getting to know people and their way of life. St. Paul the missionary did find the hospitality of his hosts very charming. He said, In every circumstance and in all things I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. I do all things in him who strengthens me. Paul endured difficult moments just to take the gospel to other peoples far from his culture. When you take a critical look at life, you will discover that it s a celebration from the moment we are born until we die. Food is involved in all these. Prophet Isaiah says, On this mountain the Lord of hosts will provide for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines, juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines. For all our struggles in life, God invites us to celebrate with him on this high mountain when we receive the Eucharist as food for our journey. God is inviting us; can we make it to the wedding feasts? Everybody is given an open invitation to attend; there s no restriction and no discrimination. In Africa, I use to love such moments when I crashed on celebrations and ate, danced and sang with those celebrating. I was always welcomed. Virginia Woolf wrote, One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well. Also, an African proverb says, The way to a person s heart, is through his stomach. God is inviting us to dine with him. He wants us to wear the right wedding garment because he s holy, pure and perfect. When people dine and wine together, they open up and talk straight from the heart. When you travel round the world, you taste all kinds of food. If you are choosy, you may go to bed hungry. But if you love to explore, you eat to your fill. Food is food and heaven is open for continuous celebration. What s your favorite food? Let me know! Keep praying! SCRIPTURE READINGS TODAY S READINGS First Reading On this mountain the LORD will make for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines (Isaiah 25:6-10a). 5 October 12, 2014 Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 Evangelization Lifelong Faith Formation FAITH FORMATION CORNER :) PARISH TIME RECAP :) We learned that the famous blessings of Jesus are The Beatitudes, which we will be studying throughout this year of Parish Time. These blessings, promising happiness and rewards to those who observe certain virtues. These virtues are the opposite of the worldly view. The world tells us to seek riches, power, honor, and the ability to exercise control over others. Jesus clearly states that blessed are the poor in spirit, the meek, and the pure of heart. Within The Beatitudes we hear Jesus promising happiness to those who mourn and suffer persecution for His sake, and the sake of His message. "Virtue" in 'The Catechism of the Catholic Church', #1803 states, "A virtue is an habitual and firm disposition to do the good. It allows the person not only to perform good acts, but to give the best of himself. The virtuous person tends toward the good with all his sensory and spiritual powers; he pursues the good and chooses it in concrete actions." So, living a virtuous life is looking to the good of all things. Remember, when seeing, or speaking of, good in anything just, honorable, pure, lovely, gracious, or excellent, St Paul tells us in Phil 4:8, to, "think about these things." Not as we see it but how God sees it. To be as The Blessed Mother is, full of Grace, is the purest example of how we can do the will of God, as she did. We want to be filled with Grace! The Grace we receive from God are through The Sacraments that Jesus left to this, His Holy Church. We encourage that every home should have a copy of 'The Catechism of The Catholic Church'. Thank you to the Dad that reminded us that the Catechism can be found on the Vatican website :) Make it a Habit 1. Say this small prayer every day. Cut it out and tape it to your bathroom mirror.
