Parishioners are invited to bring their dry, blessed palms from previous Palm Sundays this weekend and on Saturday, February 25th. Please drop off your blessed palms in the special receptacle in the narthex [vestibule] of the Church provided by St. Paul Youth Group, or the Parish Office during regular Office Hours. BLESSED PALM BURNING: On February 26th, at the close of the Parish Picnic, the Youth Group will supervise the burning of the Palms in our courtyard in front of the Parish Hall, to make ashes for Ash Wednesday, which is March 1st. 3 F. V R / R T February 19, S S Y R A NEW LAW OF LOVE R. V C. Y, P V According to the introductory lines of the Open Doors Report (2016) titled Freedom of Religion and the Persecution of Christians, the persecution of Christians is getting worse in every region in which we work and it s getting worse fast. Religious extremism is worsening in the Middle East, sub-saharan Africa, Latin America, and Central Asia; and North Korea is one of the worst places to be a Christian. By far, the report indicates that the rise of Islamic extremism in sub-saharan Africa shrinks when compared to the violence in the Middle East. The persecution of Christians from across the world is fueled by factors such as Islamic extremism, religious nationalism, tribal antagonism, denominational protectionism, communist oppression, aggressive secularism, organized corruption, and totalitarian paranoia. The report also indicates that Christians try to hide their faith in areas of great persecution to avoid arrest or dispatch to labor camps. The World Watch List (WWL) is a system designed by Open Doors USA to indicate where the Christian faith costs the most. Although the Church may be persecuted, it will prevail against the machinations of the enemy no matter how they plan. Jesus encourages us when we face persecution. He says, You have heard that it was said, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one as well. Is the teaching of Jesus making Christians vulnerable to attacks by enemies of the faith? Why did he not urge Christians to defend themselves against evil with swords and bombs, rather than to offer no resistance? The answers are logical when we consider the nature of evil minds. Here is the explanation: Jesus does not want us to escalate evil by replying wrong with wrong. And indeed two wrongs cannot make a right. So the fundamental teaching of Jesus is to de-escalate the rise of evil with a different approach. If someone takes your tunic, hand him your cloak as well. And if he wants you to go one mile, go two miles instead. This is difficult to implement for any human being to watch evil overwhelm them without any form of resistance. However, when we interpret it that way we miss an important point. We have the right of survival as well as the enemy. Every human being has the right to defend themselves against assault, aggression, and attack by whosoever. But, if we implement the old law of an eye for an eye, then we make the world blind. The new law of Jesus is to offer the enemy a new perspective of love instead of violence. Christian teaching establishes a big difference in the world, and we can see it around us. Jesus commands us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves because if we only show love to those who love us, of what benefit is that to the enemy? This command establishes the difference between children of the light and those of darkness. When you imagine the victims of Christian persecution as innocent human beings working hard for their daily living, then you can wonder why they are victimized. God is the creator of both the good and the bad in the world. He urges the bad to repent and the righteous to reflect God when he says Be holy, for I, the Lord, your God, am holy. God does not command us to initiate revenge against the wrong that comes upon us but to live at peace with our neighbors in developing a just world where the rights of individuals are upheld. Therefore, the new law of love restricts the Christian from aggressive violation of the rights of others in the name of promoting any agenda. Instead of that, the Christian can pursue an aggressive implementation of the rights of others no matter their religion, race, or gender. Affinity to religious obligations that produces pain and blood is far from the intention of God in creating various people where they are and how they are. The Open Doors Report (2016) challenges us to be human in recognizing the pain of those who suffer persecution due to war, extremism, or religious intolerance. St. Paul says, All belong to you, and you to Christ, and Christ to God. Learn to love your neighbor; it will pay you when you are in danger. Keep praying! Ashes will be distributed during all the Masses in our Church. MASSES: 7:00 am / 8:30 am / 12 noon / 5:00 pm / 6:30 pm. Ash Wednesday is NOT a holy day of obligation, it is a day of both fasting and abstinence. We fast and abstain that we can realize what we need to let go of to become like Christ. L G F A LENTEN GUIDELINES: Ash Wednesday March 1 and Good Friday April 14, are days of both fasting and abstinence. A day of Fasting means: a limit of one full meal with two smaller meals, not exceeding the main meal, for those ages inclusive. A day of Abstinence means: all who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain totally from meat on that day. CHURCH ENVIRONMENT There should be NO FLOWERS OR PLANTS in the Church during Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, March 1st. So we ask that you please refrain from bringing bouquets in to the Blessed Virgin Mary statues in both the church and chapel during these times. Look for our Crown of Thorns pendants being sold as our Annual Adoration Fundraiser during Lent.

4 4 S / CDA / O CHARITY AND DEVELOPMENT APPEAL The annual Charity and Development Appeal (CDA) is underway. Thank you to everyone who has made their pledge. PAUL¹S KNIGHT¹S OF COLUMBUS is an extremely active organization whose members volunteer a substantial amount of time for the benefit of the church, community and various other areas. He is a specialist in Urologic Surgery and Oncology. He is married to Dr. Nanette Auriemma, and they have one son, Anthony. He was ordained DEACON DR. PETER AURIEMMA BIO to the Permanent Diaconate for the Diocese of Phoenix on November 8, 2014, and he is the Deacon and Director of Hispanic Catechesis and Evangelization at St. Joan of Arc Parish in Phoenix. Last year at St. Paul s, Dcn. Peter presented, The Passion Talk, Medical explanation of Christ s Passion. Our Mother Mary s Birthday Blessing Club This simple program is set up to send a card to your child when they are born, or as soon as possible. We want to reaffirm that each child is a unique, indispensable part of God s plan and thereby remind everyone that each person conceived has human dignity, as a child of God, and a right to life.
