C M C F 2, 2017 THURSDAY, FEB. 2ND, BRING YOUR CANDLES TO DAILY MASS FOR THE ANNUAL BLESSING! Many Catholics keep shrines or prayer-stations of some variety in their homes. In these special places in the home, a candle or candles are often burned during times of prayer. In the same way that icons or medals are blessed, it is traditional for these candles to be holy items, and blessed by the priest. The annual blessing of devotional candles takes place on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple, or "Candlemas"-- "Mass of the Candles"-- forty days after Christmas. This marks the official close of the Christmas season on the Church calendar (as it was kept before the Novus Ordo). Bring your own devotional candles to be blessed at St. Paul's Daily Masses on Thursday, February 2nd at 7:00 and 8:30am! (Note: Candles do not need to have any specific composition, such as beeswax, to be used in home devotions.)

3 F. V R / R T January 29, F S Y R S A R. V C. Y, P V The inaugural speech of Abraham Lincoln, in March 1861,ended with an appeal to the people of the South: We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. In the election of November 6,1860, Lincoln beat Stephen A. Douglas, John C. Breckinridge of the Southern Democrats, and John Bell of the new Constitutional Union Party. Lincoln consolidated his presidency with a vision of unity in spite of the American Civil War between the confederates in the south and the union states in the north. Abraham Lincoln directly faced the contentious issue of slavery because the states in the south believed that slavery is right while the north believed it was wrong. With many threats to his life, Lincoln insisted on unity and change of attitude towards other human beings no matter their color. He rebuilt the country the best way he could until he was assassinated in April 1865 while watching a play at the theater. Visionary leaders are hard to find. Even when we find one, we do not realize their value until after death. Years after their death, we draw inspiration from their lives. Think of Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Mahatma Gandhi, Joan of Arc, Indira Gandhi, Chico Mendes, Teresa of Calcutta or Martin Luther King Jr. All these men and women, and many others dedicated their lives to service without counting the cost on their lives. Jesus Christ is a role model for excellent leadership. In his public ministry, he unveiled his mission to the poor and the downtrodden. The beatitudes illustrate the love of Jesus for everyone; the poor and the rich alike. Reading the beatitudes increases our knowledge of the public ministry of Jesus. For example, he said, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Why would Jesus think of the poor as inheritors of heaven? What about the rich? The background to this is that the poor are often forgotten in many societies. They live hopeless lives under terrifying conditions with no end in sight. The promise of inheriting heaven means that even in their condition they too can find joy with God in the other life. The rich find their comfort here. Prophet Zephaniah lived years before Jesus and he too encouraged the poor to seek the Lord with humility so that they can find shelter on the day of his wrath. The humble of the earth refer to the lowly persons in society who don t have the privileges of luxurious living. In their conditions, they can look up to the Lord for support and leadership. Jesus is a friend of the poor and the broken-hearted. St. Paul confirmed this by saying, Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong. This confirmation by Paul should not mean that God spites the rich to please the poor. It is not to be taken in that regard. Rather, God gives the poor hope that their suffering on earth is not in vain as another joy awaits them in the hereafter. For both the rich and the poor, having God at the center of their lives is an invitation to live righteous lives. However, the person who draws closer to God is the one who experiences pain. Often times the rich hide in their comfort zones and eliminate religious obligations because the joy of the moment removes any sense of the end. Paul says God brings righteousness, sanctification, and redemption to those who are open to accepting his love of eternal salvation. It takes a clear vision to impact people s living. Abraham Lincoln paid the price with his life. Many other visionary leaders ended up dead; brought down by evil opposing characters. Jesus Christ was condemned by the same characters who thought his vision was antithetical to human solidarity with the poor. At moments of great adversity, only a visionary leader preaches like Lincoln We must not be enemies. Let s be friends once again Jesus is an eternal role model. Will you make somebody smile today? Keep praying! T R : First Reading You humble of the land, seek justice and humility, and the Lord will be your protection (Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13). Psalm Blessed are the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs! (Psalm 146). Second Reading God chose the weak of the world, those who count for nothing, so that whoever boasts should boast in the Lord (1 Corinthians 1:26-31). Gospel Jesus taught from the mountain: Blessed are the poor in spirit (Matthew 5:1-12a). 5 P A / F F / S January 29, P A S C : J. 29 F. 11 Happy Anniversary Joan & Robert Chirico, from Jennifer & Phil Nazzaro and Family. If you would like to sign up for St. Paul s Perpetual Adoration Chapel, which is a 24-7 Chapel, please contact Adoration Lead Coordinators, Ann and Larry Manion, February 2, is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the temple; a day of purification, renewal, and hope. On this day, exactly 40 days after Christmas, we commemorate Mary's obedience to the Mosaic law by submitting herself to the Temple for the ritual purification, as commanded in Leviticus: Leviticus 12:2-8: Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them: If a woman having received seed shall bear a man child, she shall be unclean seven days, according to the days of separation of her flowers. And on the eighth day the infant shall be circumcised: But she shall remain three and thirty days in the blood of her purification. She shall touch no holy thing: neither shall she enter into the sanctuary, until the days of her purification, be fulfilled. But if she shall bear a maid child, she shall be unclean two weeks, according to the custom of her monthly courses, and she shall remain in the blood of her purification sixty-six days. And when the days of her purification are expired, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring to the door of the tabernacle of the testimony, a lamb of a year old for a holocaust, and a young pigeon or a turtle for sin, and shall deliver them to the priest: Who shall offer them before the Lord, and shall pray for her, and so she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that beareth a man child or a maid child. And if her hand find not sufficiency, and she is not able to offer a lamb, she shall take two turtles, or two young pigeons, one for a holocaust, and another for sin: and the priest shall pray for her, and so she shall be cleansed. Luke 2:22-24: And after the days of her purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they carried him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord: As it is written in the law of the Lord: Every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord: And to offer a sacrifice, according as it is written in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons: ST. BLAISE NOVENA began on The Feast of St. Paul! St. Blaise Novena (Continued) DAILY PRAYER: St. Blaise, gracious benefactor of mankind and faithful servant of God, who for the love of our savior suffered many tortures with patience and resignation; I invoke your powerful intercession. Preserve me from all evils of body and soul. Because of your special merits, God has given you special graces to help those who suffer from ills of the throat. Relieve and preserve me from them, so that I may always be able to fulfill my duties and with the aid of God s grace, perform good works. I invoke your help as special physician of souls that I may confess my sins sincerely in the holy sacrament of penance and obtain their forgiveness. Amen. FIFTH DAY: O Lord Jesus Christ, you taught your apostles that they had to live the beatitudes in order to be part of your Kingdom. You were poor, meek, humble, and persecuted. That is why, you were the happiest of all men because you yourself have lived the beatitudes to their fullness. Your servant, St. Blaise completed the beatitudes when he gave his life for the defense of the gospel. O St. Blaise, inspire us always to be humble in spirit, to be meek and lowly so that we may merit the promise of eternal life promised by Jesus to all his followers. May the beatitudes permeate our lives. May we reflect to others the beauty of being poor, meek, and humble in the name of Jesus. We ask you, dear saint, to intercede for us before Jesus so that he may pour on us the Holy Spirit. Amen. Daily Prayer: Our Father, (3) Hail Mary, (3) Glory Be, St. Blaise, protect us from all throat ailments. SIXTH DAY:O Lord Jesus Christ, you wanted to adopt all men and women as your brothers and sisters to form a new human family of faith. You wish that all men and women become your disciples and followers and inaugurate a Kingdom where all humanity would become children of your Father. The holy martyrs form an elite group in this new family, where their faith shines so splendidly. O St. Blaise, Jesus is very proud of you because of your faith. Look on us, your devotees, who are still struggling on this valley of tears, with our waning faith because at times life is too cruel for us. Inspire us to live your kind of faith, to make Jesus our strength so that we can withstand the perils of life, sufferings and pains we encounter, and not to be afraid of sacrifices. Amen. Daily Prayer: (3) Our Father, (3) Hail Mary, (3) Glory Be, St. Blaise... SEVENTH DAY:O Lord Jesus Christ, you told your disciples that the door to heaven is narrow and that they must do their best in order to enter it. You want them to be strong in virtues and resistant to sin and temptations. You emphasized that heaven is not for those who easily succumbed to sin, but are for those who resist and stand strong. For this purpose, you shower them with graces. O St. Blaise, as a bishop, you already had a heroic life marked by mortification and fasting, as you disciplined your body so that you may stand strong in spiritual matters. You did not hesitate to sacrifice food and comfort so that you may become closer to Jesus. Look on us, your devotees as we struggle to be holy and faithful. Instill in us the love for fasting and mortification so that being able to discipline our bodies, we may deepen our relationship with Jesus. Amen. Daily Prayer: (3) Our Father, (3) Hail Mary, (3) Glory Be, St. Blaise... EIGHTH DAY: O Lord Jesus Christ, you did many healings and three times you ordered three dead persons to life. You showed your disciples that you have power over their lives, the sickness and death that afflict them, but you also did not cure everybody, nor did you resurrect all the dead. Sickness and death have a role to play in your plan of salvation and you want them to be included in our reality till the end of this earthly existence. O St. Blaise, we accept our sicknesses and ailments. But we also ask Jesus that we would be really happy and thankful if he can grant us exception. Tell him that our healing will bring him glory, honor, and the spread of your name. In this way, more men and women will follow Jesus and become his disciples through your intercession. Amen. Daily Prayer: (3) Our Father, (3) Hail Mary, (3) Glory Be, St. Blaise... NINTH DAY: O Lord Jesus Christ, you predicted that your apostles would die as martyrs. In fact all of them, except for the apostle John shed their blood for you. You were happy for them because they followed your footsteps. No servant indeed is above his master. You who have the power over death and life, love to see your disciples giving up their lives for you, knowing that you can give them a better life, a better existence. O St. Blaise, Jesus restored your life and you are now in heaven, enjoying the company of the apostles and the saints. You have already seen how powerful God is, a power shown in his love for us. Listen then to our petitions and whisper these to the ears of the Almighty so that he may take them into his consideration and decide favorably for us. Amen. Daily Prayer: (3) Our Father, (3) Hail Mary, (3) Glory Be, St. Blaise... Saint Blaise Feast Day: February 3

MASSES, which will be held in the church to accommodate all. Many Catholics might remember Saint Blaise's feast day, February 3, because of the Blessing of the Throats that take place on this day. Two candles are blessed, held slightly open, and pressed against the throat as the blessing is said. Very few facts are known about Saint Blaise. It is believed he was a bishop of Sebastea in Armenia who was martyred under the reign of Licinius in the early fourth century. The legend of St. Blaise tells us that he was born into a rich and noble family who raised him as a Christian. He became a bishop. Later, a new persecution of Christians began. He received a message from God to go into the hills to escape persecution. Hunters discovered a cave surrounded by wild animals who were sick. Blaise walked among them unafraid, curing them of their illnesses. The hunters recognized Blaise as a Bishop, so they captured him to take him back for trial. On the way back, he persuaded a wolf into releasing a pig that belonged to a poor woman. When Blaise was sentenced to be starved to death, the woman, in gratitude, sneaked into the prison with food and candles. Finally, the governor had Blaise killed. Saint Blaise is the patron of physicians, sick cattle, wax- candles, wool combers, and of wild animals because of his care for them and of those with throat maladies. He is invoked against afflictions of the throat (Bentley, Roeder). As one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, Saint Blaise was much venerated throughout Central Europe. In art he is a bishop with a metal comb and a tall candle. He may be shown in many different ways: (1) with crozier (pastoral staff) and two candles (no comb); (2) martyred by being torn with iron combs; (3) in a cave with wild animals; (4) discovered by hunters, a fawn near him (not to be confused with the monk, Saint Giles); (5) blessing the birds in front of a cave; (6) rescuing a poor woman's pig from a wolf; (6) saving the life of a boy who swallowed a fishbone; or (7) with the city of Dubrovnik in his hand or being carried over the city by angels (Roeder). PRAYER TO ST BLAISE AGAINST THROAT DISEASES AND OTHER ILLNESSES O Blessed St Blaise, you received from God the power to protect men from throat diseases and other maladies. Take away the illness that afflicts me, keep my throat healthy and perfect so that I can talk correctly and be able to proclaim and sing praises to God. I promise you, St Blaise, that the words coming from my mouth will always speak: the truth and not lies; justice and not calumnies; goodness and not harshness; comprehension and not intransigence; forgiveness and not condemnation; pardon and not accusation; respect and not disparagement; conciliation and not intrigue; calmness and not irritation; unselfishness and not egotism; edification and not scandal; enthusiasm and not defeatism; conformity and not complaint; love and not hate; joyfulness and not sadness; faith and not disbelief; hope and not despair. St Blaise, keep my throat free from illness so that I can praise God, my Creator, and thank you, my protector. Amen. The church of Saint Blaise, designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, was built from 1518 to 1545; its high facade is lined with two bell towers; on its left there is the elegant canonica (priest's house) with a double-opened gallery. ~ Montepulciano, Italy In upcoming bulletins look for more information on our two Missions for Lent 2017!

Come and See New Parishioners, and interested visitors, please join us for a Come And See Orientation. We invite you to learn what we offer in spiritual, educational, service and social opportunities. Sunday, January 29th, at Noon (following the 1: 0 a.m. Mass) Meet in the Conference Center. There will be refreshments, conversation, and a tour of our campus. It should last about one hour. Together we worship, learn, work and share with each other in a supportive, grateful parish community. Welcome to St. Paul s parish! Questions? Call the parish office Ask about Come And See. Cradle Catholic or Newbies You are Most Welcome! TMIY THAT MAN IS YOU All Adult Men of the Parish are Invited. Feb. 2, 6:00 a.m. The new program topic will be: The Bible and the Sacraments, which examines the sacraments of the Catholic faith. Not simply looking at the basic teaching of the Church as to their meaning and origin, it inves gates the deeper mysteries they contain as illuminated by scripture. The Bible and the Sacraments looks at each sacrament individually, seeking to understand where they come from, what they mean, and why they are so important and founda onal to our faith. Finding their ins tu on in Christ and their origin in salva on history, they are God s gi of life to His children. FEBRUARY 2, AM IN THE CONFERENCE CENTER Themes Covered: How we literally become children of God The movement from the visible to the invisible through mystagogy What it means to say that Word leads to Sacrament The intimate relationship between the liturgy and the Sacraments The crucial role of covenants Why the Sacraments are nothing less than sacred covenant oaths
