3 L W / R January 20, R S S N W J O R. V C. Y, P V The celebrations of Christmas and the New Year are gone. Memories of celebrating with loved ones and meeting new friends will linger for a long time. It is now business as usual. We return to our schedules and continue with the plans of our lives; plans for a better tomorrow. It is important to reflect about the use of our time, the opportunities we have and what we can make of our lives. In the ordinary season of the Church s calendar, we examine activities from the public life of Jesus. How did Jesus approach issues of his time? What did he do to improve the conditions of people he met? Why did he spend his time explaining certain mysteries hidden to his listeners? And what about us, can we learn some lessons for our spiritual and everyday living in this world? Definitely, there are lessons we can learn from the public ministry of Jesus which we can apply to our lives. In today s gospel, Jesus teaches us an important lesson during a wedding. When all the wine was finished, Mary his mother approached him and said, They have no wine. Jesus listened to his mother and acted. He told the servants Fill the jars with water. He ordered them to draw out the water and take it to the head waiter. He tasted the water and it had turned to wine. He was moved with joy and said, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now. The head waiter was surprised that the water in the jars became wine and he could no longer hide his joy. At this wedding, Jesus obeyed Mary, his mother, and the waiters in turn obeyed Jesus for the instructions he gave. The sequence of events led them to experience a new wine from the water that they filled in the jars. Does this strike a chord in our lives? The lesson is that when we work together and we listen to each other, we can achieve great results. When all the conditions for success are aligned, there is no one who can hold us down as we rise to the skies. This is a great lesson for team work and team spirit especially in a new year. The event at the wedding of Cana in Galilee is one of the earliest miracles of Jesus recorded in the gospels. He revealed his glory to the people of Israel and to the world that he was truly sent by the Father to lead us to the Him. It is interesting that St. Paul writing to the Corinthians says, To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another, the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit; to another, mighty deeds; to another, prophecy; to another, discernment of spirits; to another, varieties of tongues; to another, interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes. As Jesus brought joy to people at the wedding in Cana, we also should contribute DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU. positively toward improving the conditions of our lives and of others. Every individual is therefore encouraged to identify the gifts God has bestowed upon them. By knowing every gift, we can use them adequately toward supporting a just and faithful society. The gifts of prophecy, wisdom, speaking in tongues, discernment or interpretation of tongues are by no means the only gifts in modern society. We have evolved with knowledge of our world and many inroads have been accomplished in human life that we can easily recognize for our adaptation toward a better society. The book of the Prophet Isaiah gives us an idea of how the people of Israel survived periods of devastation wrecked on them by powerful foreign nations. The deportation of the northern ten tribes of Israel in 722 BC and the devastation of Judah in the south in 586 BC caused a loss in the direction of their nation. Yet, in spite of the pain in their hearts, they knew that obedience to God s eternal laws will return them to his favor. Isaiah wrote, For Zion s sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem s sake I will not be quiet, until her vindication shines forth like the dawn and her victory like a burning torch. The joy of a new beginning is thus like the taste of new wine and Isaiah explained it using good names, No more shall people call you Forsaken, or your land Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight, and your land Espoused. These expressions summarize the wedding of Cana in Galilee; when there was no hope of any wine Jesus brought delight to the guests! Christians of today therefore ought to learn to contribute to a better society by doing something no matter how insignificant. Through the development of personal gifts, we can make ourselves happy pleasing others and enriching our lives. No gift is useless unless we demean ourselves into a negative application. Jesus changed water into wine; we too can change inaction to action leading others to a life of bliss. As Christians, we can overcome a disordered life by positive identification of what truly represents us to the world in a positive image. The overall goal is to translate every hopeless situation to a hopeful one in spite of the overriding conditions to the contrary. Within this year, our hope is that God transforms our perilous conditions into positive realities for his glory. This is possible when we look up to Him and proclaim his marvels seen in creation to which we also belong. It is important we reflect on the approach of Jesus and how he impacted the guests at the wedding. Don Miguel Ruiz said, Every human is an artist. And this is the main art that we have: the creation of our story. What is your story of joy from the recent past? Keep smiling!

8 8 facebook.com/phxstpauls S T, T T For the Week of January 19 th and 20 th His mother said to the servers, Do whatever he tells you. John 2:11 Today s Gospel The Catholic definition of Charism an extraordinary power given by the Holy Spirit for the good of others. Literally gifts of grace (charismata), described by St. Paul as the gratuitous blessings from the Holy Spirit, expressed in detail in today s second reading (1 Cor 12: 4-11). It is easy to list the gifts we don t have. For example, I can t sing and the only thing I make is reservations! Although I m known to cook up a mean Mexican chicken mole and occasional African dish now and then. Twice Fr. Bruno in deep shock said, You made this? when enjoying my cooking. Compliment? I m going with that. But what St. Paul is reminding us is that we ALL have gifts from the Holy Spirit. Unique and beautiful gifts! Today, really reflect on the goodness (gratitude) of your gifts and how to use them for the good of others. Truly a sin against the Holy Spirit to renounce any gifts you have. In other words, don t say you have no gifts. It hurts your relationship with God in Trinity. St. Paul reminds us to use those gifts for different forms of service and believe the Holy Spirit is there to support you. I cherish those with the gift of humor, or being a good listener or any type of artistic talent. When I laugh & smile, or share a story or listen to good music all these moments belong to God. God is so Good! In our Gospel, our Mother Mary always leads us to her Son Jesus! Oh Mary, how we love thee! Mother Mary led me to type this story. My first cousin (Mary) is a widowed single mom, works at a home improvement chain and has an 8 th grade son. Mary posted on Facebook that her son wanted to continue his Catholic education in High School and asked for prayers. In hopes of a miracle, her son took entrance exams for a few schools including the newly built St. John Paul II Catholic High School in Avondale. As a reminder, this school was made possible by the Together Let Us Go Forth campaign. His exam scores exceeded all expectations (thank you Catholic grade schools!) and he was accepted by every school. Now the hard part. She posted again that although our prayers were answered and entrance exams successful, she really needed prayers now. Mary could not afford the Catholic High School tuition. I messaged her that I ve been involved in the Together Let Us Go Forth campaign and $4 million had been allocated to providing scholarships to families with financial needs. The campaign targeted those working class families who like her, had to decide between Catholic education and rent. A blessing and miracle, she received just enough support to make her son s dream come true. St. Mary s Catholic High School will have a new freshman Knight in fall Despite a long trip to downtown, the family wasn t surprised since Mary and her siblings all graduated from St. Mary s Catholic High School. Folks, this campaign is changing lives now and building our Catholic legacy. And as I type & reflect, it is no coincidence that Mary inspired this story, Mary is in the school s name, Mary is my cousin and Mary, mother of Jesus instructs the servers at the wedding feast at Cana. I m having chills! Together let us say, Hail Mary. Wow! This was just revealed to me too. The beginning of the Together Let Us Go Forth Prayer asks for Mary s intercession and to use the Holy Spirit s gifts to build his Kingdom. Eternal Father, we ask you, through your Beloved Son, and the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe to pour forth your Holy Spirit upon the Together Let Us Go Forth Campaign. May the Holy Spirit renew and transform us into missionary disciples, so we may bear good fruit for the Kingdom of God. AMEN!
