3 L W / R March 4, T S L W C? R. V C. Y, P V Pope Francis faces dissenting voices while leading the Church in the 21 st century. Apart from the publication of his encyclicals, Lumen Fidei (2013) and Laudato Si (2015); his apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia (2016) is particularly attracting dissenting voices. But do not get the argument wrong, it is important to question what does not align with apostolic teachings. The teachings of the Church must be respected at all times, and the pontiff is one person that ought to lead us to obeying the commandments of God. If the custodians of God s eternal laws are divided, then the followers of Christ will also be divided by taking opposing sides on important laws of the Christian faith. This should not be among us. Unity is important. For this reason, it is important to pray for the Pope and all the leaders of the Church that they adhere to the true teachings of the Church as handed over by Jesus to his apostles. However, we need to re-examine the reason why God set down his commandments as given to Moses. What we know as the Ten Commandments are a set of laws basic to human survival. In all societies of the world, these laws are applicable if they desire to maintain law and order. Powerful individuals do not have to override weaker individuals and take away their possessions without any punishment. If this was the case, then the law of the jungle would apply might is right. Since might is never right, we collectively subscribe to be governed by the rule of law and equality under the law. God knew that there would be chaos in the future if laws were not given to the Israelites. To stem rebellious attitudes, he gave Moses these laws so that equality could reign supreme in the hearts of all Israelites and all those who come after them. Listen to what God says, For I, the Lord, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their fathers wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation; but bestowing mercy down to the thousand generations on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments. If these words do not scare us, then we are taking God for granted. He has decreed that he will punish those who disobey his commands down to the third and fourth generations. He will bless those who obey his commands to a thousandth generation. The contrast between disobedience and obedience is very sharp, in this case, to indicate that there are consequences for our action or inaction. In the teaching of the Church, the Seven Deadly Sins, also known as the Cardinal Sins, remind us of the behavior of man and woman. We choose immoral living instead of obeying God s laws. These sins are lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. The result of not obeying the Ten Commandments of God yields a plethora of vices that overrun the human will to respect God or his laws. The illustrations of deadly sins can be seen in societies and cultures of the world where individuals choose to be on the wrong side of the law. Yet God insists that we do not break these laws if we want to establish a just society. Those who are saddled with the responsibility of leadership within the body of Christ have a herculean task of insisting on these laws against the winds of modernity or liberalism. Shifting the interpretation of the law can cause divisions. For example, in the law against murder, God clearly says, You shall not kill. The Church s interpretation is that all human life is sacred from conception until death. Therefore, violating human life at whatever level in this process is a contravention of what God commanded. If we bend to modern winds of liberalists ideologies, then we find ourselves supporting abortion, euthanasia, suicide or unbridled actions against life. The commandment of God, therefore, on murder is clear and unambiguous. Human life is sacred and it is only God s prerogative to give it or take it at His Will. Understanding this basic dynamic can help us apply the same principle to other laws. It does not mean that we cannot fail due to human weakness; rather, it means that we feel the shame of failing God since we tilt to the wrong side of the law. Jesus found that the money changers were on the wrong side of the law when they made the temple a place of corporate trading. This made Jesus angry and he started to drive them out of the temple. Listen to his words, Take these out of here, and stop making my Father s house a marketplace. God s house is a holy place. Nobody can make it a corporate trading post. Compromising on this standard opens the gate for dissenting voices to rise up to duty. If one were to assess the mind of God, one might say these laws are meant for good not evil. He desired peace and not confusion in human society. When you keep your cherry pie and go to work, you should return to find it intact as you left it. If someone moves your pie or eats it up, this can be the basis for conflict and violence. St. Paul says, For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. By these words, St. Paul wanted Christians to realize that God had good intentions when he created the world and put laws in place to guard our decisions. The question therefore is not why the commandments? The question should be why do we question the interpretations of God s eternal laws as taught by the Teaching Authority of the Church? There are no easy answers for a controversial question. Dissenting voices can set the Church s leadership on edge. Ancient popes had their share of dissenting voices whenever they taught anything deviating from Jesus. Pope St. John Paul II had many enemies and they almost assassinated him in Pope Benedict XVI faced many dissenting voices and he resigned in Now Pope Francis is facing his nightmares as he leads the Church deep into the 21 st century. The scenarios do not always look rosy and churchy when there are clashes between modernity and God s eternal laws. The focus should be based on helping us turn our hearts to God rather than away from God. Any rational reasoning away from this path is antithetical to God s laws. D. L. Moody wrote, There will be no peace in any soul until it is willing to obey the voice of God. Will you obey God or break his laws? Keep praying Image: Wikipedia.org

CHURCH DOORS God bless our volunteer ushers who are here at every Mass welcoming all who come to the celebration. They are always happy to open a door for you whenever they are available. Please be aware that it is our ushers' responsibility to keep the interior doors of the church-- the ones which separate the narthex from the nave (or the vestibule from the body of the church)-- closed at all times. This is not a trivial job. Those doors provide a sound barrier, minimal but necessary, between folks greeting one another as they enter and folks who have already entered into prayer in our pews. The doors provide a physical barrier between the sacred space of the interior of the church and the secular space which is the whole world outside (the narthex being a transitional space). Last but not least, they provide a security barrier, at least a minimal amount of delay, between those inside and someone entering who may seek to do us harm. That moment of delay and having to open up another door could give us an opportunity to stop someone with ill-intent before they reach our congregation. For this reason, the "Exit Only" doors which are located on either side of the nave will be kept locked during Masses which are in progress. (They will, however, be unlocked in between Masses.) Our ushers are not security guards, but the doors themselves are our help. Please help the ushers in their duty by never propping open any church door, especially the "Exit Only" doors and the interior narthex/nave doors. Please do your part to keep our doors closed which helps to maintain the integrity of our sacred space and the security of our congregants. Thank you!

7 P A, F F, S March 4, OUR LENTEN JOURNEY Join us for Adult Faith Study with BISHOP BARRONS DVD Series CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players (2016) Great Saints in the History of the Church that helped shape our faith. Tuesday Mornings at 9:15am March 6 th and 13 th Wednesday Evenings at 6:00pm March 7 th and 14 th On March 6th and 7th: ST. CATHERINE of SIENA The Mystic Mystic, wonderworker, and confidant to popes and kings, St. Catherine of Siena exemplified the power of a life lived in relationship with Jesus. Her love for Christ was a love that cast out all fear and transformed her into a living expression of him. In her weakness, his strength was revealed, and through that strength, St. Catherine of Siena provided an example of faith that changed her culture and left an enduring legacy that the Church still resources today. The Passion Talk - Medical Explanation of the Passion March 12, 6:00 9:00 p.m., O Carroll Hall (Teens may attend if accompanied by a parent.) C rucifixion was outlawed by the Emperor Constantine in 337AD. Within a few generations, the details of this form of capital punishment was forgotten. The crucifix is the central symbol of our Catholic Faith, but many do not realize how horrible an instrument of death it was. In order to more fully understand and appreciate the tremendous sacrifice which Jesus made for us, this lecture will examine the suffering which Jesus endured for our salvation from the perspective of a physician. It is based on Scripture as well as the most current archaeological and forensic research. Dr. Peter Auriemma was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from the Medical School of the Autonomous University of Guadalajara, Mexico, and he completed his Post Graduate Surgical training in New York and Chicago. He specializes in Urologic Surgery and Oncology. He is married to Dr. Nanette Auriemma, and they have one son, Anthony. He was ordained to the Permanent Diaconate for the Diocese of Phoenix on November 8, 2014, and he is the Deacon and Director of Hispanic Catechesis and Evangelization at St. Joan of Arc Parish in Phoenix. He has been giving this lecture on the death of Jesus since The Power of Prayer: Testimony from a committed adorer at St. Paul s Adoration Chapel: "I have been struggling with will power; I have none. But as I began to pray the Sorrowful Mysteries, the first thing I read was "the spirit is strong but the flesh is weak". God was talking to me, telling me He understands and I have to be strong and I can do this." The St. Paul s Perpetual Adoration Team is looking for additional adorers to help keep constant vigil with our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Committed scheduled adorers are urgently needed at the following hours: SUNDAY: 2 am, 3 am, 4 am, 5 am TUESDAY: 1 am THURSDAY: 3 am, 4 am Perpetual Adoration Needs: SATURDAY: 3 am, 3 pm, 5 pm** **Must be able to arrive 10 min *early* Do you feel God calling you to adore? They offer suggestions to help guide your prayer, fasting and almsgiving this Lent. This week we encounter Safiata and her family in Burkina Faso. Farming was very difficult because of long dry spells. CRS has helped Safiata farm with irrigation and crops that do well in dry climates, like onions. The cash crops have helped her to pay for education for her 9 children and 16 grandchildren and to keep food on the table. Her story helps to illustrate the importance of using God s gifts with care, a part of Catholic Social Teaching. How have you cared for God s creation this Lent?
