3 L W April 15, T S E R R S R. V C. Y, P V Great men and women in the history of our world have given us great speeches that touch our hearts in many ways. When we reflect on what they said, we learn lessons for the present in order to change the course of our future. For example, Edmund Burke ( ) once wrote, The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Years later, Abraham Lincoln ( ) said, To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards of men. Also, Martin Luther King Jr. ( ) said, Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. These lines remind us how relevant it is to speak in the midst of injustice. Today, silence has cost us the loss of souls and the destruction of peoples lives. From the use of nerve gas in the war in Syria to the abduction of school girls in Nigeria, and from the massacre of Rohingya minorities in Thailand to the continuous rape gangs in Central African Republic, we can testify to the silence of good men and good women. It is not enough to be a leader of a country, it is most important to act swiftly in order to hedge the spread of evil consuming innocent souls in senseless attacks and wars. This may not be anything to us who rise comfortably from our beds and go about our normal duties. This is a norm for us. For many others in wars and conflicts it is an abnormality, a disruption of their peaceful environment. Numerous people across the world are trapped by the conditions of their environments. This is why the world needs good men and good women to rise up against the activities of evil so that every individual can live to their full potentials. Peter, the leader of the early Church was tired of hiding and so opted to challenge the Jewish authorities for their evil ways against the early Church. He said to them, Now I know, brothers, that you acted out of ignorance, just as your leaders did; but God has thus brought to fulfillment what he had announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer. Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away. He wanted the Jewish authorities to change their ways instead of always condemning people to death or silencing them through imprisonment. Challenging evil comes with a cost. And the cost is the heaviest that anyone can ever imagine. Most of the men and women that rose up against evil paid the ultimate price with their lives. Jesus died for the same reason while challenging the evil of his time. Many others before him did and many after him have sacrificed themselves fighting the reins of evil. After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to a few people to strengthen them because of the challenges they will face in the future. The first group that needed his support was the apostles. The second group was the women who followed him in his public ministry such as Mary Magdalene. The third group comprised of individuals who were with him like the two disciples on the way to Emmaus. These groups of traumatized men and women received support from Jesus because he knew that their lives will be haunted by evil agents when they proclaimed his resurrection. Jesus therefore reminded them to stay strong: These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled. After saying this to them, he commanded them to preach repentance and forgiveness to all the nations beginning with Jerusalem. Repentance and forgiveness may seem to us to be very familiar words, but the world needs a redefinition of these words to include a change of heart. The continuous perpetration of injustice and the shedding of blood must stop. For those willing to change their hearts from evil to righteousness, God is willing to forgive their past. For those living in the oceans of their sin without an attempt to change, they will continue to be haunted by guilt and fearful of eternal damnation. This is why the Lord is sending us good men and good women into the world to preach repentance and forgiveness so that the lost may be found and the sinner forgiven. If Jesus wanted he could have stopped his executioners from harming his body. He allowed them so that they could understand that healing the world does not mean silencing the just. The way of the world is to keep destroying what opposes our wicked ways. It means that the evil that exists in the hearts of evil men and women must first be eliminated before we understand how good others can be without any violence. The followers of Jesus have taken this approach of non-violent revolution to teach the wicked that change comes only from the heart. Unfortunately, many champions of change have suffered humiliation and paid the ultimate prize with their lives. Therefore, the middle course while we witness evil actions in the world is to act according to our instincts or convictions based on the model of Jesus. While using evil means may stop evil, it may not be necessary to indulge in war of any kind because evil multiplies evil. However, when we speak up against the machinations of evil we register our disgust to the agents of evil. Our voices can stop further evil such as in the gassing of women and children in Syria, the abduction of school girls in Nigeria, the injustice against the Rohingya in Thailand, or the endless rapes in Central African Republic. There are many senseless acts that are avoidable if only men and women challenge evil agents frontally to change their hearts and concentrate on building bridges instead of destroying the ones they never built. Malala Yousafzai (b. 1997) said, When the whole is silent, even one voice becomes powerful. In this way preaching repentance and forgiveness begins with those called by Jesus from the waters of baptism. Changing the world, therefore, is a duty for every man and woman cleansed by baptism and initiated into the fold of believers. The resurrection of Jesus has thus given us the mandate to go and evangelize. It is necessary to do so without counting the cost. Are you ready to speak up in the midst of family injustice? Keep praying!

Together they explore what it means to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the One who fulfilled the prophecies of the Jewish scriptures. Today s selections refer to our human weakness, yet they emphasize the forgiveness and peace that are available to those who put their faith in Jesus Christ the righteous one (1 John 2:2). In the Acts of the Apostles Peter invites everyone to repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away (Acts 3:19). The First Letter of John calls Jesus Christ expiation for our sins (1 John 2:2). Finally, in the Gospel Jesus greets the disciples with Peace and urges them to preach repentance, for the forgiveness of sins (Luke 24:47). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There are many ways in which religious communities are organized. Some have a central authority in a congregation, and others have a rule that is shared by all the members, but are a kind of federation of independent houses. Sometimes, congregations with distinct histories and ministries decide to merge. Several years ago, one of the largest mergers on record took place. Seven independent congregations of Dominican women religious, most in the Midwest, are now one new congregation enfolding more than seven hundred members spanning thirty-six states. The oldest of the founding groups, the so-called Kentucky Dominicans, began as a frontier community in Other communities have European roots. To get to this historic moment, the sisters spent many years in conversation, and approved the new structure by a two-thirds majority vote. This was then ratified by the Holy See. The merger allows the sisters to pool their resources in order to be more effective in ministry. They are living the Paschal Mystery, experiencing Christ s dying and rising in an inspiring way. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. INTERIOR CHURCH DOORS It is our ushers' responsibility to keep the interior doors of the church closed at all times. Those doors provide a sound barrier between folks greeting one another as they enter and those who have already entered into prayer in our pews. The doors provide a physical barrier between the sacred space of the interior of the church and the secular space which is the whole world outside. Last, they provide a security barrier, at least a minimal amount of delay, between those inside and someone entering who may seek to do us harm. For this reason, the "Exit Only" doors which are located on either side of the nave will be kept locked during Masses which are in progress. (They will, however, be unlocked in between Masses.) Please help the ushers by never propping open any church door, especially the "Exit Only" doors and the interior narthex/nave doors. Thank you!
