3 L W / R March 3, R S S T J U R. V C. Y, P V Today s gospel is a continuation of last Sunday s reading from Luke 6. This reading is also a compilation of the sayings of Jesus meant to encourage people to live the Christian life. The definition of a Christian must encompass living the life of Jesus and being like him in words and deeds. Without the examples of Jesus, the Christian would be left to guess how to live life. But since we have the gospels, we are able to learn from Jesus and try to emulate his lifestyle. Jesus begins by asking his disciples, Can a blind person guide a blind person? This is practically impossible, though in modern life there are breakthroughs to make the blind independent. However, in a practical sense, a blind person is incapable of leading another person since he has no ability to see clearly and make judgements. In the spiritual sense, Jesus wants every disciple to be like the teacher. He is the teacher and we are his disciples. We need to learn from him because he came from the Father to lead us toward the right path. The next point is also important regarding the Christian life. A good tree cannot produce rotten fruit; likewise a rotten tree cannot produce good fruit. A good person should do good acts of kindness and love as Jesus loves us. A bad person is like a bad fruit and the actions too are bad. Jesus says it better, A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks. The two points above make the teachings of Jesus more important, even today. In our interpersonal relationships, we need to build bridges and avoid hurting others with our words and evil actions. The summary of these two points is that the Christian must seek to be a good person fashioned after the life of the Master. By living a good life, a Christian is expected to choose a life of righteousness and avoid judging others who are wayward. However, we can admonish the sinner and pray for repentance of sins. When the Christian does not conform to the life of righteousness, then he has no moral ground to admonish others to change. In this way, both the sinner and the righteous need to look up to Jesus for support toward the perfect life. Can the sinner change and become a righteous person? Definitely. The sinner can change and embrace the righteous life because Jesus loves the sinner as well as the righteous follower. He said in his teachings that he did not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. Since he came for the sinners, then the opportunity of salvation is open to those who are alienated from God s kingdom based on their sins. By repenting of their sins, they can be saved, based on God s mercy and love. By default, the sinner has already alienated himself from enjoying the forgiveness of God. Yet, when the sinner turns from his ways, God welcomes him back and restores his full rights. The story of St. Paul can be likened to that of a sinner that repented and began to live the Christian life. From his forceful capture of Christians all over Jerusalem and Judea, he became notorious for defending his Jewish roots against the new religion of the Christians. As he encountered Jesus on the way to Damascus, he repented of his sins and changed his lifestyle. Instead of persecuting Christians, he joined them and became a true apostle and missionary to the world. Today, we remain thankful to him for his persistence in preaching the gospel of Jesus. In today s second reading, St. Paul teaches the Corinthians to seek victory in the name of Jesus. He says to them, Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be firm, steadfast, always fully devoted to the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. This is surprising to his listeners because he was a betrayer of the Christians. He admonished them to be firm, steadfast and devoted, according to the life of Jesus. This is a miracle! No one would expect a murderer to reform and preach peace to his listeners. It would be suspicious. But St. Paul was set for a new life from the moment of his personal encounter with Jesus. The teachings of Jesus are necessary for the modern world. The challenges of today even force us to ask the usual question, What would Jesus do in this circumstance? In the midst of temptation, we must refrain from sin and stand on the side of Jesus in spite of any pressure that seeks to consume us. In ancient times, the story was the same. The Book of Sirach tells us that when the sieve is applied, the husks appear meaning no one is righteous in the sight of God. The book tells us never to praise anyone because when tested, they can fail and disappoint us. This point is lovely for reflection, The fruit of a tree shows the care it has had; so too does one s speech disclose the bend of one s mind. A sound mind should be free from any foul words and despicable attitudes; likewise an evil mind will have warped or weird ideas. The lessons we can learn are two. The first is that every Christian must strive to be like Jesus in words and in deeds. Since a blind person cannot lead another, we ought to learn from Jesus who is the perfect Master who knows the way to eternal life. We are followers of Jesus and he will lead us in the right path toward our eternal salvation. He is the Chief Shepherd who leads his sheep to the right pasture. The second point is that we must open ourselves to the Holy Spirit to convert us from sin to righteousness, from hatred to love and from despair to hope as we strive to live according to God s laws. The pain of living the Christian life is in the present sense. The future has so much promise of an eternal reward in God s kingdom. The coming of Jesus therefore, is a relief to both the saints and the sinners to hope in God s inestimable love. St. Augustine of Hippo once said, God loves each of us as if there were only one of us. God does not fail. Rather, we fail God by running away from him. Are you ready to change your ways and live according to God s commands? Keep praying!

8 8 facebook.com/phxstpauls S T, T T A Campaign Update from the Diocese of Phoenix and St. Paul s Parish Goal Hello my fellow parishioners. May the peace and joy of our Lord be with you as we enter into the Lenten Season. I would like to offer a campaign update and begin by thanking all those who have made a pledge to the Together Let Us Go Forth, Juntos Sigamos Adelante Campaign. This campaign is only the second campaign in the history of our diocese and will enable the Diocese of Phoenix and St. Paul Parish to raise significant funds for our needs. In February of 2018 our parish joined the Most Reverend Thomas J. Olmsted in his vision of raising $100 million dollars to help meet the needs of our growing Diocese. Each parish, under the direction of a Diocesan-assigned Campaign Manager, works closely with the Pastor to help him select a group of people to be his Cabinet. The members of the Cabinet will assist him in explaining the campaign to our parishioners. Many methods of communication will be used, however, the most effective way to explain our Bishop s vision and show the benefits of Discipleship, Evangelization and joining our Parish is through setting up personal meetings, in-home visits, appointments in the office, etc. God bless our Cabinet members and we offer many thanks for their continued participation, commitment and support for this campaign. St. Paul Parish was assessed by the Diocese to reach a pledge goal of $1,804,943. Our goal will be used to assist in the many areas of Discipleship and Evangelization described by our Bishop. This campaign also allows 35% of the Pledge Goal to be returned to each parish. That means over the next 5 years or as soon as our pledges are paid in full, St. Paul Parish could receive over $631,000. As we continue to evangelize, I would like to share with you our progress in this Campaign. Please watch for future updates as we re-ignite and gain momentum to reach our parish goal. Number of Families (pledges) 179 1,200 (100% Participation) Dollars Pledged to date: $872,250 Goal: $1,804,943 (over a 5 year period) Paid Pledged Dollars: $196,500 35% Paid Pledged Dollars: $ 68,500 To date we have achieved 49% of our goal and have been truly blessed with a $64,000 deposit received from this campaign for Direct Parish Support. The deposits are held in a restricted account and will be used solely for the St. Paul Family Center. This Family Center will add additional space to the classrooms on the North-West side of campus and will house the newly conceived Family Formation Program with materials geared towards education and supporting the entire family. Your support is crucial. If you have not pledged yet, please help our parish achieve its goal Should you need help or clarification, please call the office (602) For those of you who have already made your pledge we are deeply grateful and we ask that you help us encourage our fellow parishioners to do the same. Nothing is impossible if we are united together. Together let us go Forth. May God continue to bless the Catholic Community of St. Paul Parish.
