3 L W November 26, C K S R S S G R. V C. Y, P V The parables of Jesus are from the daily events of human life. In narrating the parables, Jesus used familiar subjects known to his Jewish listeners for two reasons. The first reason is to attract their attention on the subject, and secondly to win their sympathy. By attracting their attention, they listened keenly to his stories and participated in drawing lessons out of them. There is no parable of Jesus that does not relate to human situations. It is important, therefore, to understanding these parables in relation to continuous human existence from the Jewish culture of Jesus time to our contemporary cultures. From the parable about the sower to the parable of the man robbed between Jerusalem and Jericho, we can draw lessons from them just like the Jewish listeners. Also, the parable about separating the sheep from the goats at the end of time is another important story that relates to all culture of the world about reward. The angel is like the farmer that comes at the end of the day to separate the sheep from the goats. The sheep are the obedient servants of God while the goats represent the stubborn servants. The angle of the Lord is commissioned by God to separate the sheep from the goats based on their behavioral patterns. The king says to the sheep on the left, For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me. The king here is the judge of the universe, in this sense; the honor is attributable only to God. The goats on the left represent the disobedient ones who refused to see the image of God in their neighbors and thus treated them unkindly. The king replied, For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me. In this sense, we can conclude that the disobedient servants refused the opportunities of helping needy individuals when they still had the time to do so. However, both the sheep and the goats expressed surprise at this judgment. The king answered them in a kind way by saying, Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me. The sheep did excellently well with their opportunities. He says to them, Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. The goats are sent to eternal punishment in a place for the devil and his angels. Contextual theology allows us to apply the words of Jesus to our contemporary situation. There should be no delusion about what will happen at the end of time when judgment comes upon the inhabitants of the earth. Every person is given equal opportunity to be righteous and avoid evil. Many choose wrongly. From the beginning of the world, God endowed every person with the freedom of choice and the ability to distinguish between holiness and filth. Accepting to work according to our consciences means accepting the consequences of our actions. St. Paul says, Those who belong to Christ; then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father, when he destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. By living our lives in this world, we constantly inch towards the end. Although no one knows when the end will come, we accept that is will surely become a reality. Living a life of grace is an advantage that keeps us closer to God. On the other hand, disobeying God separates us from his presence. God will surely demand an account of our lives at the end of time. Why should the sheep be separated from the goats? All of them belong to the category of livestock, so why the two groups? Livestock behavior is symbolic of human behavior as well. The behavior of each is unique and different. Animals are like us because we see a reflection of ourselves in their attitude. Observing sheep and goats in an agricultural environment can help us differentiating their behaviors is relation to ours. While sheep seem to be superior in behavior against the goats, the latter are stubborn in obeying simple commands from the shepherd. Even at that, the shepherd knows how to deal with both of them as God deals with each of us. God speaks through the prophet Ezekiel by saying, As for you, my sheep, I will judge between one sheep and another, between rams and goats. The justification of this passage is in differentiating our behavior based on avoiding evil and doing good as seen in the parable. For us who live in these contemporary times, the parable applies to us because God will judge our actions or inactions at the end. He alone has the power to judge our behavior when we act or refuse to act in helping a neighbor in need. The coming of Jesus Christ is to close that gap so that we are not surprised on Judgment Day. The way to stop that is by helping your neighbor the best way that you can when there is still time before the separation comes. Which side do you belong: The Righteous or The Evildoers? Keep praying!

5 L W / C November 26, Celebrating Liturgical Life on the Solemnity of Christ the King Today we celebrate Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. It is also the close of our liturgical year. We recognize the recipients of sacraments from this past year and give thanks for God's goodness. Clothed in the white garments, we put on Christ to live the gospel. This year nineteen (19) infants and adults received the Sacrament of Baptism. The Spirit of God's love is poured out on us when we are nourished by the heavenly bread, making us one in mind and heart. This year nineteen (19) people received the Sacrament of First Holy Eucharist. Set like a seal upon our hearts, God sends us the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence, the spirit of wonder and awe in God s presence. This year twenty-one (21) members received the Sacrament of Confirmation. They are no longer two, but one flesh joined by God never to be parted. This year seven (7) couples entered into the Sacrament of Marriage. Christ is the firstborn of the dead and has opened the gates of heaven. Those who believe in him shall have eternal life. This year St. Paul's prayed for the repose of thirty-seven (37) souls. Jesus said, I assure you as often as you did it for the least of my brothers and sisters, you did it for me. Through your generosity and support of our outreach programs St. Paul's has been able to help countless families! Jesus said, Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you shall not have life within You. This year thirty-six (36) souls were nourished at the hands of our twenty (20) Pastoral Care Team Members, who bring Communion to the sick and homebound each week. Truly CHRIST IS KING! 8 8 facebook.com/phxstpauls St. Vincent de Paul Adopt-a-Family It s hard to believe that Christmas is around the corner! St. Paul s Parish will again host the St. Vincent de Paul Adopt-a-Family Program. As you plan for the holidays, please consider adopting a needy family as an individual, with family or friends or with co-workers. Families range in size from single parent and child to couples with several children. We will be happy to match you with a family that fits your interests. As a sponsor, you will be asked to provide gifts for family members and food for their Christmas dinner. Sponsors and families will be matched in late November/early December to give you sufficient time to purchase the gifts and food and to deliver them to the family. Most families are dealing with unemployment, illness or other unfortunate conditions and would not have a Christmas without our help. INTERESTED? If you are interested in adopting a family or have any questions, please call the church office at and leave a message for Regina Castellani or her at r.castellani@cox.net.
