2 Page Two June 4, 2017 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR, FR. THOMAS KOYS, M.A.,S.T.L. In the wake Memorial Day and with our National prayer effort called: A Fortnight of Freedom around the corner, here s a lesson from the pages of Catholic history that needs to be applied to our present world affairs. In the early church, as Christianity was growing, in the midst of periodic and barbaric persecutions at the hands of extremely anti-christian Roman Emperors the issue of Christians serving in the Roman army was no small debate. Such a conflict of interests makes the 1960 s anti-vietnam protests like child s play. Can you be loyal to your nation and remain a man or woman of peace? The question was the same then as it is now. Two figures from the second century that face off are Tertullian and Montanus. Montanus argued that the Christians must be pacifists. He was kind of a Desmond Doss person (the Seventh Day Adventist soldier, who refused to carry a weapon, who was featured in the powerful movie Hacksaw Ridge). Montanus became the leader of Christians known as the Montanists. His hatred for violence is so understandable and in so many ways admirable. When you consider the terrible treatment Roman soldiers showed in carrying out their Emperor s orders, it is hard to imagine any other possible stand against Rome. Tertullian however, opposed Montanus. Tertullian was in favor of Christians being a part of the Roman army. Both men were Roman citizens so both had the respect and dignity of being a citizen yet it is easy to see how they would have presented very different political philosophies, much like we have today between pacifists and hawks. Tertullian despised the cruel treatment of the Christians and praised the courage and faith of those who were martyred. Now here s the rub. Montanism gets declared a heresy, and although Tertullian did not quite reach the level of sainthood, he was a most honored theologian of his time. The key to understanding the wrong headedness of the Montanist s position it is necessary to see the negative side of way of thinking. It must be seen that he was not declared a heretic because he believed in pacifism, it was because he declared Christians who would not accept martyrdom were not real Christians. In other words he was declaring martyrdom was the only legitimate path for a Christian. Therefore, a Christian never fights. Here s an insightful interpretation by Fr. Hardon, S.J. on this issue. Tertullian argued that Christians are to become a substantial part of a nation and should wish to bring, if possible, all its people to the faith. If this is true, then as citizens of the State the faithful are obliged to serve the essential interests of the State, which at times will include military service.. (from Hardon, The Catholic Catechism, p 347. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the fact that Fr. Koys will be away at the Multiple-sclerosis fund raising BIKE-A-THON, June 11, for his brother, and the millions of people afflicted with MS, the other archdiocesan second collection for Retired Priests of the archdiocese will be taken up the weekend of June 18. Therefore, the second Sunday of the month s normal second collection for our Sharing Ministry, (Zacchaeus House) will be cancelled for the month of June. If you are able and wish to make two second collection gifts on June 11, (The Missionary Co-op and Retired Religious) and on June 18, (Retired Priests and Zacchaeus house) please put both envelopes into the second collection basket. The funds will be separated and distributed accordingly. Please accept our apologies for this confusion. 3 Pentecost Sunday Page Three ST. LOUIS ARCHBISHOP RESISTS LAW REQUIRING CATHOLICS TO HIRE ABORTION ACTIVISTS: WE WILL NOT COMPLY Led by the Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson, has drawn a line in the sand for the protection of innocent human life. In February, the city passed Ordinance 70459, which criminalizes "discrimination" against those who have had abortions or are planning an abortion, and against those who advocate for "reproductive health." Archbishop Carlson called the passage of Ordinance a "terrible moment" for St. Louis. "As a city resident and the leader of the oldest organized religion in the region, I am outraged that the City of St. Louis Board of Aldermen has now enshrined into law an ordinance which creates a 'sanctuary' for the despicable practice of abortion," he said in a public statement. "The laws of the City of St. Louis now actively protect and promote the killing of unborn children, who will be denied their humanity and very existence." The Thomas More Society filed a lawsuit Monday against the proabortion ordinance on behalf of Carlson and his Archdiocesan Elementary Schools, Our Lady s Inn Maternity Homes for pregnant women, and O Brien Industrial Holdings. The legal complaint says the city ordinance violates Constitutional free speech, freedom of religion, the right to expressive association, due process and equal protection, as well as several state laws, including the Missouri Religious Freedom Restoration Act. This ordinance does not exempt individuals with sincere religious, moral or ethical objections to abortion from its requirements in any way, and even for qualifying religious organizations, the exemption for employment is extremely limited vague and undefined, Thomas More Society Special Counsel Sarah Pitlyk said. That is unconstitutional, and directly violates both federal and state law. Furthermore, the ordinance forbids Christian organizations and individuals whose teachings hold abortion to be a grave sin, from refusing to sell or rent property to individuals or corporate organizations that promote or provide abortions. The city law also seeks to compel private businesses to include abortion coverage in their employee health plans, despite sincere objections by (Christian) company owners, the Thomas More press release said. The Archdiocese of St. Louis has 112 Catholic elementary schools and educates more than 23,000 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. A spokesperson for the archdiocese told Life Site News that the city ordinance would be disastrous for their schools' fidelity to the Gospel. Under the city ordinance, "our Catholic schools could not refuse to hire and could not discipline religion teachers who publicly support abortion in or out of the classroom, even though it is a grave sin under Catholic teaching," the spokesperson told Life Site News. The archbishop went even further in his public comments. "St. Louis has chosen to continue down a path of promoting death, repression, resentment, division, and selfishness instead of promoting life, unity, charity, freedom, and goodness," he charged. The new law coerces people of faith to facilitate sin, according to the archbishop. "This horrible piece of legislation will now force city residents to be unwilling participants in the abortion business by requiring business owners and individuals to tacitly approve any 'reproductive health' decisions made by their employees or tenants," he said. Carlson, on behalf of all Catholics under his pastoral care, vowed to exercise civil disobedience against the ordinance. "Let me be perfectly clear: the Archdiocese of St. Louis and its affiliated agencies and ministries will not comply with this oppressive law." Joining the fight against the city's pro-abortion ordinance is Our Lady's Inn Maternity Homes, which cares for homeless pregnant mothers and their children. Our Lady s Inn gives them shelter and helps them attain educational goals, gain employment, and secure stable housing. The 35-year ministry has helped 6,000 women in crisis pregnancies overcome abortion pressure from boyfriends, parents, and grandparents and choose life for their babies. Christian businessman Frank O'Brien also joined the lawsuit. O Brien Industrial Holdings is one of INC 5000 s fastest growing companies in the U.S. His businesses include the Christy Refractories Company, Christy Catalytics Company, Christy Catalytics Shanghai, Christy Industrial Services, and Christy Minerals. Archbishop Carlson, a pro-life champion, did not mince words in speaking against the city's new law or its pro-abortion supporters. "The passage of this vile bill has been mistakenly heralded as a success for women by misguided organizations like NARAL and Planned Parenthood. The passage of this bill is not a milestone of our city s success. It is, rather, a marker of our city s embrace of the culture of death." Carlson said the fight is not about creed or color, but about humanity. "I welcome anyone, from any faith background, color, creed, or nationality, to join me in supporting, promoting, and protecting children, women, families, and life itself," he said.
