There are a number of issues with our Church building that are going to have to be addressed so please be generous in raising funds through our annual raffle! Billy Dodge will be at St. Francis Parish in Ellsworth on May 2 to offer advice on how we can help our children, as well as ourselves, discern what we were made for and where God is calling them, and us, so we can all lead happy and fulfilled lives. Everyone is invited for this presentation on Wednesday, May 2, at 6:00 pm in the St. Francis Church. 4 A Message From Our Pastor Next week, the Sixth Sunday of Easter, May 6, will be the First Holy Communion for the second graders of our parish. Do you remember your preparations for that joyful day? Besides your parents, who was the catechist who prepared you? Who was the priest who celebrated the Mass of your First Communion? It was 47 years ago this May that I made my First Holy Communion with 71 other second graders at Sacred Heart Parish in Marshfield. Sister Mary Alice a short and rotund School Sister of Notre Dame was our teacher who imparted to us her deep love of Jesus Christ and especially Him present in the Blessed Sacrament. I remember her constant exhortation to us children: Stay close to Jesus! My mother and father had been well-catechized themselves and modeled for me the importance of and reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist in their lives. Father Peter Leketas the long-time Pastor of Sacred Heart and the one who eventually invited me to consider the Priesthood gave me our Eucharistic Lord for the first time in I am so deeply grateful to each one of them for handing on to me that wonder, awe, reverence, and joy at the Eucharistic presence of Jesus Christ Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity under the humble appearances of bread and wine! Our parish celebration of First Holy Communion should be for each one of us a time of renewal in the truth of and love for this great mystery of Christ s Presence. The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church promulgated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005 that question and answer summary of the larger Catechism of the Catholic Church of 1992 is a sure guide for such renewal. The Compendium teaches that the Eucharist is the very sacrifice of the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus which He instituted to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the ages until His return in glory. Thus He entrusted to His Church this memorial of His death and Resurrection. It is a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a paschal banquet, in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us (271). The Compendium continues: The Eucharist is a memorial in the sense that it makes present and actual the sacrifice which Christ offered to the Father on the cross, once and for all on behalf of mankind. The sacrificial character of the Holy Eucharist is manifested in the very words of institution, This is my Body which is given for you and This cup is the New Covenant in my Blood that will be shed for you (Luke 22:19-20). The sacrifice of the cross and the sacrifice of the Eucharist are one and the same sacrifice. The priest and the victim are the same; only the manner of offering is different: in a bloody manner on the cross, in an un-bloody manner in the Eucharist (280). What is more, in the Eucharist the sacrifice of Christ becomes also the sacrifice of the members of His Body. The lives of the faithful, their praise, their suffering, their prayers, their work, are united to those of Christ. In as much as it is a sacrifice, the Eucharist is likewise offered for all the faithful, living and dead, in reparation for the sins of all and to obtain spiritual and temporal benefits from God. The Church in heaven is also united to the offering of Christ (280). With regard to this memorial and sacrifice, Jesus Christ is present in the Eucharist in a unique and incomparable way. He is present in a true, real and substantial way, with His Body and His Blood, with His Soul and Divinity. In the Eucharist, therefore, there is present in a sacramental way, that is, under the Eucharistic species of bread and wine, Christ whole and entire, God and Man (282). Having outlined the faith regarding the gift of the Holy Eucharist, the Compendium then speaks about the reception of the Holy Eucharist, that is, Holy Communion. The Church obliges the faithful to participate at Holy Mass every Sunday and on holy days of obligation. She recommends participation at Holy Mass on other days as well (289). Note that this obligation is not to receive Holy Communion, but rather to assist at Mass. This duty flows from the Third Commandment Remember to keep holy the Lord s Day and Jesus Christ Himself who recognized the holiness of the Sabbath day and with His divine authority gave this law its authentic interpretation: The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath (Mark 2:27) (451). The Bishops of our nation remind us that while the heart of the celebration of the Eucharist is the Eucharistic Prayer, the consummation of the Mass is found in Holy Communion, whereby the people purchased for the Father by His beloved Son eat and drink the Body and Blood of Christ. They are thereby joined together as members of Christ s mystical Body, sharing the one life of the Spirit. In the great sacrament of the altar, they are joined to Christ Jesus and to one another (Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion Under Both Kinds in the Dioceses of the United States of America, 5). The Church recommends that the faithful, if they have the required dispositions, receive Holy Communion whenever they participate at Holy Mass. However, the Church obliges them to receive Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter Season (Compendium, 290). We will continue next week with the manner in which one may receive Holy Communion. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us! Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, pray for us!
