For some, this means attending daily Mass, while for others it is a renewed commitment to attend Sunday Mass. To prepare ourselves for this rejuvenation in the practice of our faith, I will offer a short mini-series on helping us to get the most out of our worship experience and to understand some of the beautiful rituals encompassed in the holy Mass. Last weekend, I was struck by the beginning of Fr. Burney s sermon. He started by asking the following question, Who are you?. As he explained, there are a myriad of answers that we can offer. One example was what our Holy Father, Pope Francis, said in response to being asked this same question, saying that he was a sinner. Another answer that I ve heard from a non-catholic is that they are a child of God. However you answer the question, it is essential that you can define your identity. And, if your answer pertains to your Christian faith, it is important to understand what that entails. This brings me to the Nicene Creed. We profess the Nicene Creed as a community each week. We do not say the creed, but rather we profess it. There s a big difference in the meaning of those two words. When I look out into the congregation during the creed, some are actively engaged, while others are not. Publicly professing the creed is an act of religious freedom that should not be taken for granted. Although it is not difficult to memorize, I take this opportunity to remind everyone that the words of the Nicene Creed are conveniently located on the front inside cover of the hymnal. The Nicene Creed gives us a basic outline of what we believe in as Christians who are children of God and who have the tendency to sin. While there are many other creeds in our Catholic faith, the Nicene Creed, which was composed in the fourth century, had been selected by the early Church to defend itself against heresy. These words, over one thousand years old, are as ever-meaningful nowadays as they have been throughout history. So don t keep quiet - embrace the creed and profess it wholeheartedly! 3 SHEPHERD S TABLE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED A team of parishioners has started serving lunches to homeless people at Shepherd s Table in Silver Spring. It is a twice-a-month commitment, on the second and fourth Monday of each month. The De Chantal Church team would benefit from three to four additional volunteers to become fully sustainable on its own. For the moment, it is composed of retired parishioners who have fewer definite work occupations than those with a full-time job. The service requires availability from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. The team assembles at 11:15 am in St. Jane s parking lot to drive to downtown Silver Spring. For more information and/or to volunteer, call Edouard Motte at REMEMBER IN PRAYER... those who are sick, and all those in our nursing homes and hospitals, especially Dianne Fay Dickinson and Nancy Breslin. HOOPS FOR HEART February is National Heart Month. As one of our annual giving projects, the students of St. Jane de Chantal will be participating in Hoops For Heart the week of February 13. Help us reach our goal of $22,000 by contributing to this wonderful cause. Eighth graders Katrina Penney, Riley Clark, and Isa Western are the Junior Coordinators assisting Mrs. Tehan, and hope to surpass last year s total of $15,500. Katrina is a heart transplant recipient; thanks to all her doctors and research she is able to remain extremely active. This past summer Katrina participated in the National Transplant Games in Cleveland. She was a gold medalist in basketball and a silver medalist in Cornhole, and was chosen Youth Rookie of the Year at the games. Please support Katrina and her classmates. Go to search for our school by city and state, and join our team. You can also send contributions to St. Jane de Chantal School, c/o Lisa Tehan. All checks should be made payable to The American Heart Association. Have a heart and donate today! 2017 CARDINAL S APPEAL This weekend, February 4/5, you are asked to review the Cardinal s Appeal brochure that you will receive with your bulletin today. The theme of the campaign is: Seek first the kingdom of God (Mt 6:33). The Cardinal s Appeal campaign is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift, today, payable over ten months. A significant gift to the Cardinal s Appeal will touch the lives of many others in a very positive way. As you review the work enabled by your contribution, please reflect on God s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the archdiocese, and to the work of the Church throughout the world should be given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our archdiocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign ST. JANE DE CHANTAL SODALITY Tickets will be sold a er the 5 pm, 8 am, 10 am, & 12 pm Masses the weekends of February 4/5 and February 11/12. Credit cards accepted. Tickets sales are also available online at h ps://membership.faithdirect.net/events/details/634 Saturday, MARCH 4 12:00 NOON COLUMBIA COUNTRY CLUB $45 per person Fashions by irresistibles With a purchase of a cket by February 13, you will receive one free raffle cket to be used the day of the fashion show. 4 FEBRUARY 5, 2017 and the gifts of many enable our archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they glorify Him by enabling the work of our archdiocese and give Him thanks for all He has given us. If you received your pledge form in the mail earlier this month, please complete it and either mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend, February 11/12. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. CRH POPE FRANCIS It s hypocrisy to call yourself a Christian and chase away a refugee or someone seeking help, someone who is hungry or thirsty, toss out someone who is in need of my help. If I say I am Christian, but do these things, I m a hypocrite. You cannot be a Christian without practicing the Beatitudes. You cannot be a Christian without doing what Jesus teaches us in Matthew 25, that is, to help the needy by such works of mercy as feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and welcoming the stranger.
