FROM THE GREEN COMMITTEE There is a nobility in the duty to care for creation through little daily actions, and it is wonderful how education can bring about real changes in lifestyle (Laudato si 211). This week's tip: Use the microwave, small electric pans, toaster ovens or convection ovens for meals rather than your stove or oven. You ll use about one-third to one-half as much energy. Use appliances that are certified safe by the UL (formerly Underwriters Laboratories) or another OSHA approved safety testing organization and appliances that have a high Energy Star efficiency rating. 4 AUGUST 6, 2017 BURYING CREMATED REMAINS AT CATHOLIC CEMETERIES Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Washington seeks to assist families who are still holding the cremated remains of loved ones and are ready to inter them in sacred ground. The cemeteries of the archdiocese have prepared for the interment of cremated remains in ground burial sections, columbariums, or mausoleum niches, with respectful options for memorialization. Working with the pastor, charity burials also are available to families who desire interment, but cannot financially afford the full cost of burying their loved one. For more information, contact the manager at Gate of Heaven Cemetery (13801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, MD, ); or All Souls Cemetery (11401 Brink Rd., Germantown, MD, NEW MISCARRIAGE SECTIONS AT CATHOLIC CEMETERIES According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, nearly one in four women experience an early pregnancy loss in her lifetime. Yet, women who lose their baby in the first trimester often do not know their right to claim and respectfully bury what the medical community calls the product of conception after a miscarriage. No matter how early the loss, many Catholic couples long to name, inter, and remember their baby as an eternal member of the family. Catholic Cemeteries now offers burial options to answer that great desire of their hearts. For more information on the new Miscarried Baby Sections at Catholic Cemeteries, contact your parish priest or the manager at Gate of Heaven Cemetery (13801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, MD; ); Resurrection Cemetery (8000 Woodyard Rd., Clinton, MD; ); All Souls Cemetery (11401 Brink Rd., Germantown, MD; ), or St. Mary s Queen of Peace Cemetery (38888 Dr. Johnson Rd., Mechanicsville, MD; ). CATHOLIC ADVOCACY NETWORK REGISTRATION The Maryland Catholic Advocacy Network provides a simple and quick way for you to communicate with your elected officials, and features: alerts on legislation; quick, easy-to-use, pre-drafted messages to send to your elected officials (as-is or modified to suit your style); updated information on the issues; and news stories from around the country. Subscribe to the network at FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD STEWARDSHIP In the Gospel today, Peter yearns to do something to make concrete the Transfiguration he had witnessed. But to be a good steward of this spiritual gift, he was instructed to be still, to listen to Jesus, and to wait for His direction. Good advice for us, too! PARISH SUPPORT FOR JULY 30, 2017 Offertory July 31, 2016 Attendance July 31, 2016 $11, $13, SECOND COLLECTION: CCC & CCHD The second collection next weekend, August 12/13, will be for Catholic Communications and Human Development, providing funds for both the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). The CCC supports the Church s many and varied communications efforts, while the CCHD supports community non-profit groups, both locally and in other parts of the country, working to help the poor and vulnerable through direct assistance or advocacy. CCC funds are split between each participating diocese and the national office. Dioceses use their share of the collection to support local communications efforts such as televised Masses and diocesan newspapers. On the national level, CCC funds support the development and production of a wide range of media initiatives that are carried out by USCCB staff and grantee organizations. Please be generous according to your means. POOR BOX The Poor Box next weekend, August 12/13, will benefit Northwest Pregnancy Center, a community outreach program where trained counselors work with women and teens to identify, discuss, and solve the many challenges surrounding pregnancy and motherhood. All services are provided free of charge, including: pregnancy testing, shortterm and long-term counseling and goal-planning, material assistance, and referral assistance. For more information, visit Planning a late summer road trip? Remember that your parish expenses never take a vacation. We need your offerings in order to meet these expenses. Recommend a good book, magazine or article, exposing them to Christian values and principles. Give them a copy! Follow up with a friendly discussion on Gospel values and how these relate to the busyness of modern-day life and to the challenge of balancing family life with work and attending to both our material and our spiritual needs. Summer is a great time to help others reflect on the need for renewal and true "re-creation," both of which can be acquired as we develop our relationship with the God who helps us prioritize and live a balanced life. POPE FRANCIS From the event of the Transfiguration I would like to take two significant elements [...]: ascent and descent. We all need to go apart, to ascend the mountain in a space of silence, to find ourselves and better perceive the voice of the Lord. This we do in prayer. But we cannot stay there! Encounter with God in prayer inspires us anew to descend the mountain and return to the plain where we meet many brothers weighed down by fatigue, sickness, injustice, ignorance, poverty both material and spiritual.
