IN OUR LITURGY & MUSIC MINISTRIES MUSIC AND LITURGY NOTES A few weeks ago, I was asked to play an evening Lenten liturgy for a friend at his church (he had broken his leg an organist s worse nightmare!). The church was an Episcopal church located on the other end of Bethesda. When I walked in the door, I was greeted by numerous parishioners who welcomed me to their church. In my usual manner, I joked with them about my preference to wear gloves when I play the organ (half of them thought that I was serious Episcopalians!). Once the service started, I nearly fell off the organ bench at the beginning of the Entrance Hymn. This congregation could sing and they were proud of it! Everyone in the sanctuary was proud to be a part of this worshipping community and they all felt ownership over their public act of worship. They manifested this not only in their singing, but also in their spoken responses and attentiveness to scripture. Everyone played a part in this liturgy, and the congregation knew the responsibility bestowed upon them to engage in full and vibrant participation. After the service, I went to the fellowship hall for a cup of coffee. I circled the room, thanking everyone for their singing. They looked at me like I had two heads why would I be thanking them for singing? One person replied, If we did not participate, then what would we do? I then met a woman who used to be Catholic. She told me that while she belonged to one of our sister parishes, she often attended Mass at St. Jane s. I asked her why she had left the Church and she replied, to find a community. I was struck by the response and found myself replying defensively about how we have a lot of community events going on at St. Jane s and that she should give us another try. She let me finish, then mentioned that she found comfort and spirituality being immersed in her church s proud capability to worship together, unapologetically of individual musical talent, age, socio-political, or educational background. Despite theological differences, which we did not get into, she taught me a lot in that brief conversation and I soon began to ponder past events in my life when I have felt welcomed into a strong community. For the past two weeks, I spoke of my encounters meeting new people and being welcomed into new cultures in sub-saharan Africa. Until now, I never realized the valuable lessons that I gained from these experiences. We all have a part to play in this parish community - from welcoming the stranger to engaging in worship. Let us be Church and church well; If not for ourselves, then for others. Be well, Russ. IN OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAMS Visit the Faith Formation page at for information on the various programs, registration forms and calendars. YOUTH MINISTRY Have you gotten a chance to be a part of De Chantal s active youth program? If not, why not start? It s not too late to join and grow in faith. YOUTH MINISTRY STATIONS OF THE CROSS Attention aspiring young actors and poets: on April 11 at 7:30 pm, the youth ministry will be presenting a live presentation of the Stations of the Cross. We are recruiting volunteers to set up, act out, and narrate the stations. You will be given materials and instructions that bring the Stations to Life for our parish. There will be one training session and one dress rehearsal required of participants. If you would like to help, call Michael Ibanez at , ext. 13, by April 6. STEWARDSHIP When Jesus heard about the illness of His friend, Lazarus, He responded, This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it. Every aspect of our lives our sufferings as well as our gifts can, if surrendered to Christ, lead to blessing for ourselves and others. PARISH SUPPORT FOR MARCH 22/23, 2014 Offertory Attendance $9, $15, PARISH SUPPORT FOR MARCH 29/30, 2014 Offertory $12, $15, SECOND COLLECTION: MAINTENANCE The second collection this weekend, April 5/6, is our monthly collection to help with the repair and maintenance of our parish facilities. Recent requirements for these funds include: 1. Snow/Ice Treatment and Removal: This very cold and wet winter has cost our parish $40, to keep our property ready for school and Mass attendance; 2. Storm Water Remediation Project: Heavy rain storms of Spring and Summer have caused several incidents of excess water at our buildings. On the advice of engineering firms, we need to undertake a $50, project to redirect the flow of the water to our run-off pond. The Archdiocese of Washington has granted an exemption to all parishes of the archdiocese from the monthly archdiocesan assessment on any special collection taken up for snow removal during April; this exemption will be applicable to our maintenance collection during the month of April. If you can increase your financial contribution to our monthly maintenance collection it would greatly help our parish with these increased expenses. POOR BOX The Poor Box for next weekend, April 12/13, will benefit Shepherd s Table, a resource center for the homeless and needy in Montgomery County, providing showers, counseling, homeless information, referrals and advocacy services, a clothes closet and an eye clinic, as well as other visiting professional services. For more information, visit
