David German (b. 1954) MUSIC & LITURGY NOTES Hamburg s Sankt-Jacobi-Kirche (Saint James Church) is historically one of the city s five main Lutheran churches (Hauptkirchen). All but one Hauptkirche, St.-Nikolai-Kirche, remain, but have been significantly rebuilt following World War II. The impressive tower of the Nikolaikirche still stands and serves as the focal point of a moving outdoor memorial against war. St. James origins go back to the 13th century when it was first a small chapel for pilgrims to stop at while on their journey to the much larger St. James Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The present building was consecrated as a Catholic Church in the 14th century. However, during the 16th century Protestant Reformation the church converted to the Lutheran faith and has remained so ever since. It was completely destroyed during the War and successfully rebuilt during the decades following. Thankfully, before its destruction, members of the congregation removed all works of art, including the pipe organ, and placed them in storage outside of the city in the Altes Land (countryside). Due to this careful consideration, the church's treasures have survived and were returned to the church following its rebuilding. Among them are three medieval triptych altar-pieces: the Altar of the Holy Trinity (1518), the Altar of Saint Peter (1508), and the Altar of Saint Luke (1499), which originally belonged to the Mariendom. Aside from these inspiring works, the church is best known for its famous pipe organ, built in 1693 by the revered organ builder, Arp Schnitger, with four manuals (keyboards) and around 4,000 pipes. A cultural monument of inestimable value, it is the largest baroque organ in Northern Europe and it is currently under consideration for inclusion on the UNESCO world heritage list. I had the wonderful opportunity to play the organ when I was there back in July. The organist is very kind and has welcomed me back ever since. Coincidentally, he grew up in Washington, attended grade school at the Washington International School, and later studied music at Juilliard before returning to his native Germany. The Sunday morning service that I attended included a lot of congregational song, preaching, and a baptism (Lutherans do not always include a communion service in their liturgy). Two things about the service really impacted me. First, although the Lutheran and Catholic denominations are distinctively separate, we are still part of the larger Christian faith and baptism is something that is uniquely celebrated among all Christians. Because of this, being there as a lone foreigner and partaking in a baptismal celebration offered me a sense of welcome and acceptance; the isolation that I felt because of the language and unfamiliarity with the liturgy went away and I immediately felt part of the larger Christian community (this is something that we pray for at all times, especially during last week s anniversary of Christian Unity Week). Secondly, I was taken away by how much the congregation takes pride in their pipe organ. I feel confident saying that many people in the pews, including myself, attended this church service because of the organ. At first, admitting this made me feel a little hypocritical about worship, but after some reflection, my mind opened to the greater value that the Church has historically placed on art and culture. For many years, the Church was a patron of the arts, both visual

3 ST. JANE FRANCES DE CHANTAL CHURCH and aural. Church leaders knew that beautiful artwork and music would attract and inspire people towards a closer relationship with the Divine. There is a fine line between entertainment and inspiration, and my sentiment reflects the latter. Imagine this beautiful instrument, 325 years old, and the countless number of congregants that it has accompanied in sung prayer. Pastors and organists come and go, but this instrument has remained here for centuries, leading people closer to God in ceaseless service. Even with my shaky grasp of the German language, I proudly sang with the organ. One might think that with advanced degrees in music, it would be easy for me to participate in the singing, but the German hymnals do not place the text of a hymn underneath the notes, so I really had to rely on my ear to help me to sing with the organ. It was a beautiful experience and reminds me of the organ s intended role in worship it leads God's people in song. Martin Luther, who founded the Lutheran Church, was a big proponent of congregational singing, and while I disagree with many of Luther s arguments, I do agree with him on the merits of singing hymns. On this particular Sunday, I was grateful for the gifts of baptism and music, which helped me to find spiritual welcome in a foreign land. Will people still be worshipping in St. Jane's 325 years from now and singing with the organ that many of you have given? Please continue to raise your voices in prayer, both spoken and sung, so that generations from now our handiwork will continue to lead people closer to God. After a very competitive final round, Joshua Rivera, a fourth grade student, correctly answered the final question and was named school winner. He will compete in the Maryland State Competition. FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK This past week we celebrated Catholic School's week! Students read their "Why I love De Chantal" papers at Mass on Sunday. Open House made the school a busy and spirited place on Monday. On Wednesday, we attended Mass to celebrate the week and our Catholic values. We spent the rest of the week appreciating students, teachers, parents, community members, volunteers, priests, and the school administration. SKI CLUB Each year the seventh and eighth grade students in ski club go skiing three times at the area ski resorts. Last Friday was the first of the three trips to Ski Liberty where students took a ski or snowboard lesson, and then had time to ski on their own, grab dinner, and spend time with friends. Teachers and parent chaperones also got to have a little fun on the mountain skiing with the students. FLAG FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT The week before the Super Bowl is one of the most exciting times to be a sixth, seventh, or eighth grade student. The middle school organizes a lunch recess Flag Football competition. Students are able to make their own co-ed teams and play for the Super Flag Football Champion title. Winners will be announced next week. CH POPE FRANCIS The enemy against which we fight is not only hatred in all of its forms, but even more fundamentally, indifference; for it is indifference that paralyzes and impedes us from doing what is right even when we know that it is right [...] We need urgently to educate young generations to become actively involved in the struggle against hatred and discrimination, but also in the overcoming of conflicting positions in the past, and never to grow tired of seeking the other.
