Joyful, Joyful, We Adore You... #611 MUSIC AND LITURGY NOTES During this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, there are two ways in which we can experience mercy: we can receive mercy, and we can give mercy. Most of us understand that we can receive mercy by attending Mass and by practicing the sacrament of reconciliation, but many of us do not know that we can also give mercy. This can be accomplished by engaging in a spiritual work of mercy. The spiritual works of mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians and spiritual writers throughout history. Just as Jesus attended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to, these spiritual works of mercy guide us to "help our neighbor in their spiritual needs." There are seven spiritual works of mercy. They are: Counseling the doubtful: Everyone has moments of doubt in their faith journey. Nevertheless, we should always remember that Christ is the way, the truth, and the life, and turn to him along our way. Instructing the ignorant: At first, the word ignorant seems pretty ignorant itself. Think of uneducated instead of ignorant. This act allows us to offer knowledge about our faith and be open to talking with others about our beliefs. There is always something more to discover about our faith. Admonishing the sinner: Do not judge, but be supportive in helping others find their way and correct their mistakes. Together we can learn to walk more closely with Christ. Comforting the sorrowful: Be open to listening and comforting those who are dealing with grief. Even if we are not sure of the right words to say, our presence can make a big difference. Forgiving injuries: Forgiving others is difficult at times because we do not have God's limitless mercy and compassion. But Jesus teaches us that we should forgive as God forgives, relying on him to help us show others the mercy of God Bearing wrongs patiently: Do not be bitter about wrongs done against you. Place your hope in God so that you can endure the troubles of this world and face them with a compassionate spirit. Praying for the living and the dead: Prayer is one of the most powerful ways we can support others. Joining together in prayer for the living and the dead entrusts us all into God's care. If you are looking for ways to offer one or all of these spiritual works of mercy, our parish provides plenty of opportunities. Through Liturgical Ministries, Social Justice Ministries, and Community Ministries, there is something for everyone! In addition to spiritual works of mercy, there are corporal works of mercy, which we will discuss next week. QUO VADIS DAY Young men who are juniors and seniors in high school are invited to come and see what a day in the life of a seminarian is like at Saint John Paul II Seminary (145 Taylor St., NE) on Wednesday, February 17. RSVP to Traci O'Neill in the Office of Priest Vocations at oneillt@adw.org or Have questions or need more information? vocations@adw.org or call CARDINAL S APPEAL This week, you are asked to review the Cardinal s Appeal brochure and the tabloid that you will receive with your bulletin today. The Cardinal s Appeal campaign is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift, payable over ten months. A significant gift to the Cardinal s Appeal will touch the lives of many others in a very positive way. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our archdiocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. If you received your pledge form in the mail earlier this month, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend, January 30/31. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. STEWARDSHIP Today s Gospel provides a blueprint for good stewardship: Let the man who has two coats give to him who has none. The man who has food should do the same. (See Luke 3:11) PARISH SUPPORT FOR JANUARY 17, 2016 Offertory January 18, 2015 Attendance January 18, 2015 $ 9, $10, POOR BOX The Poor Box next weekend, January 30/31, will benefit St. Martin s Cloak. In the spirit of St. Martin, who tore his military cloak in half to share with a beggar, St. Martin s Cloak provides financial and other assistance to those in need, particularly those in our parish. Financial assistance is completely confidential. Long term problems are referred to community resources.

Habits must be renewed in the newness of the Spirit, in the surprises of God. May the Lord grant us the grace of an open heart, of a heart open to the voice of the Spirit, which knows how to discern what should not change, because it is fundamental, from what should change in order to be able to receive the newness of the Spirit.
