HAIL & FAREWELL After 18½ years, Deacon Don Mays is retiring as Facilities Manager at St. Jane de Chantal. Because of his extraordinary dedication, we have been able to enjoy a safe, well-run, and beautiful environment. We are grateful for his work and wish him well in retirement. Deacon Don will be continuing his service to the Church through his diaconal ministry. At the same time, we welcome Ed Beccles as our new Facilities Manager. Ed comes to us with experience in private enterprise and government agencies. We look forward to his continuing to make St. Jane de Chantal a wonderful place for us to gather. RESPECT LIFE MONTH: ROSARIES FOR THE UNBORN All are invited to pray the rosary for the unborn during the month of October. A sign-up sheet is available in the gathering space of church where you can pledge how many rosaries you will pray. As of October 19, 108 people have THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME signed up and have pledged 2,507 rosaries. For more information, call Lisa Tennant at RESPECT LIFE MONTH: 40 DAYS FOR LIFE Peaceful prayer outside LeRoy Carhart s late-term abortion clinic at the Wildwood Medical Center (10401 Old Georgetown Road) is taking place now through November 4 as part of 40 Days for Life. All are welcome to join parishioners of St. Jane de Chantal Parish on Saturdays from 9:00-10:00 am. For more information, call Lisa or Ed Tennant at SACRED MUSIC IN A SACRED SPACE Next weekend, on Sunday, November 4, we will enjoy a Choral Festival with the combined choirs of St. Jane de Chantal, St. Luke in McLean, and St. Francis de Sales in Purcellville, with Dr. Timothy McDonnell, Director of Choral Activities at Catholic University, conducting. The concert begins at 3:00 pm and is about an hour in duration. It is also free and open to the public. All are welcome! YOUNG ADULT FELLOWSHIP Come join us for our Fall spiritual series! We will be studying and discussing the Credible Catholic series. Through engaging presentations, the series looks to debunk several secular "myths" which drive many away from the Catholic Church. The second session, "Evidence of God's Existence from Science," will be held in Caulfield Hall at 7:30 pm on Monday, October 29. ALL SOULS INTENTIONS Mass will be celebrated each day during November for the All Souls Intentions. If you wish your beloved deceased relatives and friends to be remembered in these 30 Masses, please use the envelope found in your monthly packet or those available in the Gathering Space of church. ALL SAINTS DAY On Thursday, November 1, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of All Saints, a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass will be celebrated at 8:00 am, 11:00 am, and 7:30 pm. ALL SOULS DAY MASS We will celebrate a special Mass on All Souls Day, November 2, at 7:30 pm for the deceased of our parish from the past year. All are invited to attend, especially family members and friends of the deceased of our parish. WANTED: GIFT CARDS FOR BAZAAR TREE RAFFLE Have any extra/unwanted gift cards laying around? The ones sitting the back of a drawer or bottom of a folder that you can t seem to remember to use? We d like them to populate the highly coveted (and random, and fun) Gift Card Tree at the St. Jane de Chantal School Christmas Bazaar Tree Raffle on November 10. Any business! Any amount! THRIFT SHOP AT THE HSA CHRISTMAS BAZAAR Have you been waiting for a good reason to de-clutter the basement? The Home and School Association is collecting items for the Thrift Shop at St. Jane De Chantal School s 13th Annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, November 10. They can accept gently-used items such as housewares, jewelry, sporting equipment, bikes, books, baby items and toys; they cannot accept clothing, shoes, broken toys, games with missing pieces, or dirty/stained items. Our parish always has need for new volunteers to serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (Eucharistic Ministers), particularly at the Sunday 12:00 noon and 5:00 pm Masses. An archdiocesan training session for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion will take place on Saturday, November 10 from 9:00 am 12:00 pm at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Silver Spring. HIGH SCHOOL TEENS The High School Teens will be going to Butler s Orchard for a hay ride and bonfire on Saturday, November 3. All high school students are welcome to attend. 4 OCTOBER 28, SIXTH GRADE PLAY The sixth grade is happy to announce the spring production will be "Once Upon a Mattress." Students are learning parts and getting ready for auditions at the beginning of November. The play will be March 21 and 22. Stay tuned for upcoming fundraisers and ticket sales. DE CHANTAL DASH DAY! This fun, community event will take place Saturday, April 13, Students, teachers, parishioners, and members of the community will come together to run the 5K and 1 mile race, and enjoy post-race festivities including moon bounces, a DJ, and yummy snacks! The money raised from the Dash will go to support capital improvements for our school. Students came to school last Friday in Dash t-shirts, visors, hair ribbons, shoelaces, and sneakers to support the Dash. BALTIMORE ZOO The Baltimore Zoo Animal Ambassadors came to visit third and fourth grades, and brought their animals with them! The zoo keepers brought a scorpion, a gecko, a screech owl, and a penguin! Students learned why they are important members of our environment. EIGHTH GRADE TO THE MUSEUMS The eighth grade students visited the National Mall in Washington last week. Students were given the freedom to visit multiple museums in small groups. One of their favorites: the Botanical Gardens! The campaign season ends January 11, THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WRAP: WHITE RIBBON AGAINST PORNOGRAPHY WEEK White Ribbon Against Pornography Week will take place October 27 through November 3. During WRAP Week, fly a white ribbon on your car or mailbox to take a stand for decency. WRAP Week brings together hundreds of national, state, and local groups, and concerned citizens to educate the public. The archdiocesan Office for Family Life provides anti-pornography resources at Create In Me a Clean Heart, the United States bishops pastoral response to pornography, can be found at TOLTON: FROM SLAVE TO PRIEST Starting Thursday, November 15 through Sunday, November 18, the Archdiocese of Washington and the Diocese of Arlington are collaborating to bring the play, Tolton: From Slave to Priest, to Bishop Ireton High School (201 Cambridge Road, Alexandria). The play tells the story of Servant of God Father Augustus Tolton, who journeyed from slavery to become the first African-American Catholic priest.
