IN OUR LITURGY & MUSIC MINISTRIES ORGAN RECITAL This Sunday, February 9 at 2:00 pm, our Assistant Organist, Andrew Vu will offer an organ recital (45 minute duration) on our new pipe organ. LITURGY & MUSIC NOTES I recently read an article that tells of a new activity taking place in the Diocese of Buffalo, New York. Sadly, many Catholic churches in that particular diocese are facing declining attendance and subsequent closure. Roman Catholics of the great city of Buffalo do not want to witness continued decline in their diocese, thus they are organizing events called Mass mobs. Similar to a flash mob, a Mass mob starts with a group of people who use social media to set up a time, date, and location for strangers from all over the diocese to visit a large, beautiful church and experience the liturgy to its fullest extent with active participation in the Mass. Churches were made for prayer - they are sacred spaces that are to be respected and revered. How sad it is that there has been such a stark decline in church attendance, but praise God for the wonderful creativity of the Catholics in Buffalo. Thankfully, our liturgies at St. Jane s are very well attended and we are blessed to have an active, thriving parish. Indeed, we have a lot to be grateful for; our school, our priests, our fellow parishioners, and of course, our pipe organ! Thanks for your remarks on this weekly column. Some great thought and creativity has sparked in our parish as a result. Your increased participation at Mass is remarkable. I hope that you, like those in Buffalo, are experiencing the Mass to its fullest extent. It is so beautiful you just need to allow yourself the freedom to experience the Spirit, est qui vivificate (who gives us life), in our midst. Russ. REMEMBER IN PRAYER... those who are sick, and all those in our nursing homes and hospitals, especially Helen Fincutter, Hilda Kiss, and Isabelle Fitzpatrick.... those who have died, especially Jeannine Lynch, John Condon, and Helen Sulkovsky. IN OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAMS Visit the Faith Formation page at for information on the various programs, registration forms and calendars. FEBRUARY YOUTH NIGHTS ESSENTIALS OF FAITH Join the Tuesday night parish teens as we dive deeper into our Catholic tradition. Exploring the essentials of our faith has never been more intriguing! Follow Fr. Cusick and Br. Peter in topics you won t want to miss. There s time to think, ask questions, and have a great time. On February 11 we think about how to grow in trusting God. On February 18 join us as we hang out at the teen social event. On February 25 we hear from a guest speaker who will give testimony and witness to their Catholic faith. A great journey of faith awaits you! IN OUR BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL Check out the St. Jane de Chantal School website at to get information on admissions, see what each classroom is studying, and more. CELEBRATING CATHOLIC SCHOOLS The school community came together at Mass to culminate our celebration of Catholic Schools Week. The choir and chimes led the school in song, and Fr. Giese and Fr. Cusick concelebrated Mass for the students and faculty. The Gospel related the parable of the mustard seed, and Fr. Cusick focused his homily on that theme as well. Just as the seed is planted and nourished in the field, so too are the seeds of Catholic faith instilled and nurtured in St. Jane de Chantal students. Their Catholic school foundation will help their faith continue to grow. ST. JANE DE CHANTAL SUPER BOWL Before Seattle met Denver in the Super Bowl, St. Jane de Chantal held its own competition. Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 formed teams and competed during recess leading up to the championship game in the gym. When the bracket was full, the final two teams were from Grade 6 (Sofia D Avello, Meghan McCarthy, Julian Trilling, Henry Iloanya, Charlie Smithdeal, Andrew Timmer, and Nick Sheehan) and Grade 8 (Neil Kelly, Brennan Darby, Nick Foster, Nick Lynch, Andrew Skibbie, and Michael Dimond.) Mr. Molloy, 8th grade teacher, officiated. It was a close game, but the 8th grade players emerged victorious by one touchdown. FIRST GRADE PATRIOTS Mrs. Burke s First Grade performed the Parade of Patriots Program for Open House to show off their reading skills. They told the story of America in rhymes, songs, and poems. God Bless America. IN OUR ARCHDIOCESE Visit the Archdiocese of Washington web page at for more information on education, family youth, social concerns and other events in the archdiocese. For more information, call Tony Bosnick at or visit CARDINAL S APPEAL Many of our parishioners received a mailing from Cardinal Wuerl recently. He has asked that you make a pledge to the 2014 Cardinal s Appeal. The Cardinal s Appeal not only funds the operations of the archdiocese, it funds services that are of great help to our parish, for example, tuition assistance in our school, as well as training for our liturgical ministers. This year, the theme of the appeal is Seek First the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). As we seek first the kingdom of God, we have the capability of helping it to be present in our lives and in the lives of those around us. How does this happen? Through our works of charity, our works of love, and our works of compassion. Contributions to the Cardinal s Appeal offers each of us the opportunity to respond to the needs of others by enabling ministries and services that touch thousands of lives. Please prayerfully consider a generous pledge to the 2014 Cardinal s Appeal. STEWARDSHIP The Gospel today reminds us that our lives and our deeds must serve as examples to others, pointing the way to the Father. Not for our own benefit do we labor, but so that others may see our good works and give glory to our Father in heaven. PARISH SUPPORT FOR FEBRUARY 2, 2014 Offertory This week in 2013 $20, $14, POOR BOX Thank you for your contributions of $1, to the Monsignor Christopher Scholarship Fund.
