Each sale benefits our scouting units. BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP FOR PARENTS Parents are invited to join in a discussion group on the book The Rhythm of Life by Matthew Kelly. This book will help you to bring into focus who you are and why you are here. It will help you discover your legitimate needs, deepest desires, and unique talents. The group will meet once a month, on Tuesdays at 6:00 pm, in Caulfield Hall and read one section each month. Come every month or whenever you can. JANE FRANCES DE CHANTAL CHURCH CARPOOLING WITH CHRIST "Carpooling with Christ," a holy hour with Eucharistic Adoration, takes place during the school year on the first Wednesday of the month (October 4) from 2:00 2:45 pm in the church. All parishioners are welcome to come in for a few minutes of prayer, or to stay the entire time. SODALITY LASAGNA DINNER The Sodality invites its members and all interested women of the parish to attend the first General Sodality meeting of the year and annual lasagna dinner this Wednesday, October 4. The evening will begin with Mass at 7:00 pm, and continue with the dinner and business meeting in Caulfield Hall. Come and see what Sodality is all about we welcome new members! There is no charge for the dinner, but RSVP by Sunday, October 1 to Karen Salah (karensalah@comcast.net) or Helen Bollwerk (bollwerk@rcn.com) so we can plan for our catering. BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS To honor the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, Fr. Burney will hold a Blessing of Animals ceremony on Saturday, October 7, at 12:00 noon in the yard between the church and the school. Owners are asked to bring their domestic pets on a leash or housed in a crate. ANOINTING OF THE SICK On Saturday, October 14, at 11:00 am, we will have a communal celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The Anointing of the Sick consists of a Liturgy of the Word, anointing of sick persons with blessed oil, and reception of Holy Communion. This sacrament is for those who are seriously impaired by sickness or old age or for those who are about to have surgery when a serious illness is a reason for the surgery (Pastoral Care of the Sick, no. 8-10). Those in good health as members of the Church are invited to come and pray for our sick brothers and sisters. If you know of anyone who is sick and would like to receive this sacrament, please invite them. OLIVE WOOD ART The Little Bethlehem Christian Group will be present after all Masses the weekend of October 14/15. Little Bethlehem Christian is a group that represents 200 Christian families who live in Bethlehem and make their living as wood carvers. They offer religious items, carved from the olive wood of the Holy Land, to support and help fund the Christian presence in the Holy Land. MEN S RETREAT All men of the parish are invited to a retreat on Sunday, October 22, from 12:00 noon to 7:00 pm. Mass and meals will be included. If interested in attending, contact the parish office at parish.office@stjanedechantal.org or HSA CHRISTMAS BAZAAR: THRIFT SHOP ITEMS The St. Jane de Chantal Home and School Association is now collecting items for the Thrift Shop, part of the annual Christmas Bazaar on November 11. They are accepting a wide variety of gently used household items, but cannot accept clothing or shoes. HSA CHRISTMAS BAZAAR: CALLING ALL VENDORS The St. Jane de Chantal Home and School Association is busy planning the 2017 Christmas Bazaar, to be held Saturday, November 11, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, in Christopher Hall. They are looking for a few more vendors to sell their fabulous wares. If you or someone you know is interested in participating, decbazaar@gmail.com. DIGITAL PIANO NEEDED Our parish Music Office, located in the rectory, is in need of a digital piano. HIGH SCHOOL SMASH High School SMASH (Sunday Mass and Social Hour) will be held this Sunday, October 1 after the 5:00 pm Mass. Meet at the Seton Center from 6:00-8:00 pm for dinner, games, and socializing. The theme will be Glow in the Dark Fiesta. All high school students, no matter what school you attend, are invited. HURRICANE RELIEF EFFORT St. Jane de Chantal school has been helping with the relief effort from the recent hurricanes in many different ways. The fourth grade is selling bracelets to benefit the victims from Hurricane Harvey in Houston. We have adopted a school in Houston, St. Vincent de Paul Elementary, where many families and teachers lost everything from the

4 OCTOBER 1, 2017 flooding. We are also collecting gift cards from Target, Walmart, and Home Depot to send to the school to be distributed to those affected. Please send any gift cards to the school office, attn: Mrs. McDermitt. Lastly, we have partnered with Poist Gas Company and a St. Jane de Chantal parent to send supplies to flood victims in Texas and Florida. If you are interested in donating items to this, contact Mrs. McDermitt in the front office. FAMILY FUN NIGHT Another successful and outrageously fun Family Fun Night took place last Saturday evening on the school field. Families from the school and parish joined together to welcome in a new school year with fun and games. Moon bounces, dancing, face painting, games, food trucks, and much more make this a cherished event among the students and young parishioners of our church. DISCIPLES IN SERVICE CEREMONY Students and teachers assembled in church for the annual Disciples in Service Ceremony to commemorate all of the St. Jane de Chantal School community service programs. The ceremony began with a procession of beautiful banners the students made to depict the 13 organizations the school supports. Following the procession, students read a bible passage or an inspirational saint quote to introduce the summary of each service program. GENERAL MILLS BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION Send in your General Mills Box Tops for Education and help fund the Physical Education Program. MEN S DISCERNMENT MASS & DINNER On Sunday, October 29, the Office of Priest Vocations will hold a Men s Discernment Mass and Dinner at St. Peter s Church on Capitol Hill. Mass with Cardinal Wuerl will begin at 4:00 pm, followed by dinner and a discussion of the priesthood with priests, seminarians, and other men from the D.C. area. QUO VADIS "COME AND SEE" RETREAT Young men in Grades 11 and 12 who are considering options for college are invited to Saint John Paul II Seminary from Friday, November 3 through Sunday, November 5 to experience seminary life firsthand. SECOND COLLECTION: YOUTH The second collection next weekend, October 7/8, will benefit our parish high school Youth Ministry and altar servers programs. Hundreds of parish children and teens benefit from these programs. SPECIAL COLLECTION: HURRICANE IRMA RELIEF Thank you for your contributions of $5,406 to support relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Irma. If you were not able to make a donation last weekend, you may bring a check made out to St. Jane de Chantal to the parish office, or make a donation online. Visit our parish page at Faith Direct ( and choose "One-Time Gift." Please write "Hurricane Irma Relief" in the "Note" box. All donations will be forwarded to dioceses in the Caribbean and the southern US, especially the Diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, which has a special relationship with the Archdiocese of Washington as our suffragan diocese. These funds will be used to support humanitarian aid, reconstruction needs, and pastoral outreach. POOR BOX The Poor Box next weekend, October 7/8, will benefit Catholic Charities Sanctuaries for Life, as they assist qualifying pregnant women receive affordable prenatal and labor/delivery services. They also connect pregnant women to additional services, including housing, food, maternity and infant clothing, spiritual support and guidance, educational programs, and rental and utility assistance.
