There are several Feasts of the Church where a sequence hymn is to be sung just before the Gospel acclamation. While only required on Easter Sunday (Victimae Paschali Laudes) and Pentecost Sunday (Veni Sancte Spiritus), the other feasts with optional sequence hymns are Corpus Christi (Lauda Sion), Our Lady of Sorrows (Stabat Mater), and All Souls (Dies Irae). The text of the Pentecost sequence has an unknown authorship, but is attributed to Stephen Cardinal Langton ( ), a former Archbishop of Canterbury. Its poetry reminds us of the Holy Spirit s protection and comfort, as well as God s infinite mercy and forgiveness. We are also called to inward transformation, forgiveness, and compassion: Bend the stubborn heart and will. Melt the frozen. Warm the chill. Guide the steps that go astray. Due to the length of the Sequence, we will sing the setting found in today s bulletin in alternatum, meaning the cantor, organ, and congregation will pass around the musical leadership of individual verses. This practice represents a long tradition in Europe of the organ alone leading some of the verses in strophic chant. While the organ plays its specified verses, focus on the text and be ready to join in on the congregation s next part. For more information on this practice, there is an inspiring video on YouTube of the Easter Sequence from Notre Dame in Paris.

POPE FRANCIS The Spirit is given to us by the Father and leads us back to the Father. The entire work of salvation is one of re-generation, in which the fatherhood of God, through the gift of the Son and the Holy Spirit, frees us from the condition of being orphans into which we had fallen. [...] From the immense gift of love which is Jesus death on the cross, the Holy Spirit has been poured out upon humanity like a vast torrent of grace. Those who by faith are immersed into this mystery of regeneration are reborn to the fullness of filial life.
