5 Archbishop s Appeal Mission and Purpose Thank you for being a part of the Archbishop s Appeal. This manual will assist you in conducting a successful Appeal at your parish. Please reflect on the following information to understand the importance of the annual Archbishop s Appeal campaign. Together, we will make a difference in our archdiocese community by growing our Catholic faith in the lives of Christ s people. Mission of Archbishop s Appeal As Catholics in the Archdiocese of San Antonio, we are called to assist and serve our brothers and sisters in their relationship with Christ and His church. The Archbishop s Appeal ministry identifies, develops, and acquires the financial resources to support the essential work of the Archdiocesan ministries. These ministries provide the spiritual, educational, and material needs to thousands of individuals and families in the 19 counties that encompass the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Together, we accomplish this by raising the necessary tools to further our Catholic mission. Purpose The Appeal supports the needs of the people in our community by forming men to serve as priests and deacons to administer the Sacraments of our faith, develop catechist to educate our families in the faith, serve the needs of the poor, homeless, incarcerated, elderly, hospitalized, marginalized, vulnerable and those who find themselves in desperate situations. The Appeal is our opportunity, as Disciples of Christ to promote the Gospel message in word and deed. Thus, the Appeal allows us the opportunity as Christians to serve others in prayer and through our financial gift. Most Reverend Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS Archbishop of San Antonio, TX

7 A Message to Clergy and Coordinators ARCHDIOCESE OF SAN ANTONIO OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP Post Office Box San Antonio, Texas Facsimile My Dear Brother Priests and Appeal Coordinators, Thank you for accepting the call to serve the Archdiocese of San Antonio through the ministry of the Archbishop s Appeal. As our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has said, We are all Missionary Disciples with the power of the Spirit. This has been shared with us and passed on for many generations since the first Pentecost. We are a family of faith that is sealed with the Holy Spirit and sent forth by Christ to proclaim His love and mercy with all whom we encounter; especially those most in need spiritually, physically, and emotionally. This year, the Appeal Steering Committee selected as the theme for the 2017 Archbishop s Appeal, Disciples, Sent by the Spirit. In considering the work that we have embarked on these last few years, we recognize and continue to stay aligned with the whole Church throughout the world, bringing about the New Evangelization and shepherding Christ s people. We are a family of faith that is dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel message of Christ s love to His people. This is why it is essential that we continue to invite others to support the Archbishop s Appeal. The Appeal is how we in the archdiocese work to make our local Church the place which He envisioned it. For the 2017 Appeal, I confirm the Steering Committee s recommendation to keep the Appeal goal at $4.5 million. We will continue to support Catholic Social Services, Pastoral Ministry Programs, Evangelization and Outreach Initiatives, Catholic Education, and Religious Vocations. As Disciples, Sent by the Spirit, I pray that you continue to share the mission of the Appeal so that together we can continue to advance God s love through charity. The agencies and initiatives supported by donors provide the means to respond to the spiritual, educational, and physical needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ. I am grateful for your leadership in your parish community. Please rely on the 2017 Appeal Parish Manual to assist you in your efforts to conduct a successful Appeal in your parish. I am certain that our efforts will flourish as you invite your parish community to participate in a loving spirit of generosity. Thank you for all that you do to carry out the work of the Church. With the assurance of my prayers, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS Archbishop of San Antonio

13 A Pastor s Role Recruit and Appoint Volunteers As shepherd of your parish, we recognize that you have a busy schedule. The Appeal encourages you to recruit and appoint members of your parish community to participate in the Appeal. Volunteers will assist in promoting the Appeal and raising the necessary funds to meet or exceed your Appeal parish goal. With their support, you can educate your parish with information about the Appeal and the importance of having 100% parish participation. Allow the Appeal Activities and Task to be administered in Your Parish A successful Appeal at your parish requires your direct support. Therefore, allow time for the Appeal activities and announcements to be completed as instructed in this manual. In addition, if for any reason the Appeal video cannot be shown in your parish, please prepare yourself to provide a heartfelt motivational homily during In-Pew Weekend on February The homily should align with the message and Mission of the Appeal. You may include facts and examples on how both the parish and the Archdiocese are working together through the Appeal to proclaim the Gospel message in word and deed to Christ s people in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Use All Appeal Promotional Materials The Archbishop s Appeal requests that you use the Appeal materials such as the Appeal posters, videos, bulletin announcements, Appeal insert, and donation envelope. These resources are provided to promote, bring awareness, and raise the necessary funds for the Appeal. Pray for the Appeal on Important Appeal Dates at Least Once a Month The success of the Appeal requires the praying support from both you, as pastor, and the parish community. We ask that the Appeal prayer be prayed during key dates listed on the Appeal Timeline. In addition, we ask for the Appeal prayer to be prayed in your parish at least once a month. This can be done by the pastor or the Appeal Coordinator when you provide an Appeal parish update on the funds raised toward your Appeal parish goal. This process is very important. The Appeal encourages you and the Appeal Coordinator to keep your parish informed on the status of your Appeal progress. Make Your Own Appeal Gift or Pledge Commitment during In-Pew Weekend on February As pastor and shepherd of your parish community, you set the tone for the support to the Archbishop s Appeal. Please make your own pledge commitment or gift during Mass on In-Pew Weekend, February Your gift donation conveys the message that you fully support the Archbishop and his Appeal. Please allow time for you or Appeal Coordinator to demonstrate how to fill out an Appeal pledge envelope. Invite Your Parishioners to Participate in the Appeal Invite your parishioners to participate in the Appeal in prayer and in making a gift of any amount that they are able. They may do so by filling out the Appeal pledge envelope, respond to the Archbishop s letter, give online, or call the Appeal Office. Encourage your parish to help the Archbishop by having 100% parish participation. If a parishioner did not receive a letter from the Archbishop, they are not in the Appeal database. Please have them complete the Appeal parish in-pew envelope. On-going Support to the Appeal on Follow-Up Weekend, February 25-26, and at Least Once a Month Please continue your on-going support to the Appeal by allowing you or the Appeal Coordinator to conduct an Appeal Follow-Up Weekend on February The Appeal Follow-up Weekend allows parishes to stress the importance of their participation in the Appeal through prayer and financial commitment. Inform your community that your parish would like to meet or exceed the 2017 Appeal parish goal. Express Gratitude to Your Parish Community for Their Support to the Appeal In gratitude for the support that you and your parish community have given to the Appeal, we request for you or the Appeal Coordinator to communicate the Archbishop s gratitude for their generosity. Please do this at least once a month. This may be done when you pray the Appeal prayer and provide a progress report on the status of funds raised toward your Appeal parish goal

Catholic Social Services serve those in need of food, clothing and basic necessities, Hospital Chaplains and priests visit and bring the Eucharist to the hospitalized, the Catholic Mass is broadcast to thousands of people who are homebound, hospitalized, or incarcerated, seminarians and deacons go through formation to spiritually serve our communities, and youth, young adults, and families are given an opportunity to encounter Christ through evangelization initiatives. This work is made possible by people like you. (Pause for two seconds) It is your donations that make possible the continuation of these Catholic ministries and services. If you have already made a pledge to the 2017 Archbishop s Appeal, thank you for answering the call to serve others through the Archbishop s Appeal. (Pause for two seconds) If you have not yet made a gift, I would like to remind you that the theme for this year is Disciples, Sent by the Spirit, which focuses on our call to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). Serving Christ people and bringing them into an encounter with Him and his church. (Pause for two seconds) Being an intentional disciple is putting our faith into action by sharing the gifts God has given to us with others. Being Catholic is much more than being a member of a parish and going to mass on weekends. It is about living our faith and following Jesus, living the Gospel message in word and deed. Again, I invite you to please pray on how you and your family can support the Appeal by making a gift donation. If you have never pledged to the Appeal before, a pledge of $1 for each day of the year, $365, or $1 for each week of the year, $52, would go a long way toward helping us to serve the people throughout our archdiocese. However, any gift you can give will be truly appreciated. (Pause) There are pledge envelopes and pencils available at the end of each pew. Please use the envelopes provided to make your donation today or fill out the pledge card that you received in the mail. No amount is too small. Please take a moment to consider this question. Could you sacrifice the price of a soft drink a day or one cup of coffee per week to further the work of the Church and serve those in need? Those dollars could go to serve Christ s people in our archdiocese. Now we will view the 2017 Appeal video and message from Archbishop Gustavo. Show 2017 Appeal video. If unable to show video pastor should be prepared to provide homily/message on Appeal. Next, provide the congregation with step-by-step instructions to complete their Appeal envelope. Step-by-Step instructions can be found on page 36 of the manual. Again, thank you for your support to the Appeal, please bow your head as we pray the 2017 Appeal prayer. 29 Appeal Direct Mail Program The Appeal Direct Mail Program is conducted by the Office of Archbishop s Appeal on behalf of the Archbishop. The direct mail solicitation takes place four times a year; twice in January, once in April, and once in July. The Appeal Direct Mail Program works to help the Archbishop communicate with fellow Catholics throughout our archdiocese. The letter communications sent through this program are a direct invite from His Excellency for parishioners to participate in the Appeal. The letters communications sent include a personal ask to participate in the Appeal, donor thank you letters, and an annual Appeal report. While the Archbishop would like to reach all the parish members throughout the Archdiocese, he is only able to contact those listed in the Appeal database. The Appeal database is updated annually with the assistance of parishes. We ask that parishes send their most recent updates with new parishioners, newly married, recent address changes, and those newly deceased. This information will allow the Archbishop to communicate with all Catholics in the Archdiocese. In 2015, 77% of all contributions came from direct mail, 17% of contributions came from In-Pew solicitations, and the remaining 6% came from online, Bill Pay, and other donations. The following is information regarding the annual four mail outs sent for the Appeal. Appeal Mailings in January 2017 (Two mailings sent in two segments) The January letters are sent in two segments. They are a personal invite to parishioners to support the more than 40 Appeal ministries that provide social service programs, evangelization initiatives, and formation to Christ s people in the Archdiocese. Appeal Follow-up Mailing April 2017 The April letter is a second invite to participate in the Appeal. This letter is sent to those who have not yet had an opportunity to respond this year s Appeal. This mailing allows donors to make an eight month pledge to the Archbishop s Appeal or a one-time gift. Appeal Follow-up Mailing July 2017 The July letter is the final letter from the Archbishop. This letter is sent to those who have not yet had an opportunity to respond this year s Appeal. This mailing allows donors to make a five month pledge to the Archbishop s Appeal or a one-time gift

33 Letter from Archbishop Gustavo to Parishioners ARCHDIOCESE OF SAN ANTONIO OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP Post Office Box San Antonio, Texas Facsimile My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I am truly grateful to our archdiocesan community. Your faithful love for Christ and His Church are reflected in the support that you give to serve others through your charitable works of mercy. Together, we serve God s people in word and deed through the Ministry of the Archbishop s Appeal. This is why it is essential that we continue to support and invite others to participate in the 2017 Archbishop s Appeal. The Appeal is how we in the archdiocese work to make our local Church the place He envisioned it. The agencies and initiatives supported by you provide the means to respond to the spiritual, educational, and physical needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ. I humbly ask for your support to the 2017 Archbishop s Appeal. I am certain that our efforts will flourish, as you participate in a loving spirit of generosity in this year s Appeal. Thank you for all that you do to serve Christ s people and His Church. With the assurance of my prayers, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS Archbishop of San Antonio

35 A Well Informed Parish Parish Reports Pastors and designated staff with access to Connect Now have the ability to check the status of the funds raised towards your Appeal parish goal. This access enables parishes to view the list of your parishioners who have made a gift or an Appeal pledge. If your parish does not have access to Connect Now, please contact the Appeal Office at Parish Rosters and Appeal Contacts in Database The Office of Archbishop s Appeal works to support the Mission of the Church through gifts to the Appeal. It is essential that we maintain a clean Appeal database to generate accurate reports, reduce the cost of returned mail, and avoid the expense of data entry temps. To maintain the Appeal database, we rely on parishes to provide updates made to their parish roster. This information helps the Appeal Office to reduce the accumulation of unnecessary cost due to returned or duplicated mail. Parishes may review their Parish Roster online through their parish Connect Now. Parishes are asked to send the Appeal Office any changes as they occur throughout the year. Parish roster updates should include those who are inactive members, married, deceased, new parishioners, and or address changes. Appeal Direct Mail Outs For Direct Mail, your parishioners will receive a letter with an Appeal pledge envelope from the Archbishop. It is recommended that parishioners who receive a letter in the mail respond to the Appeal using this pledge envelope. Responding to the Appeal in this way will expedite the payment process at the bank and ensure that we do not accumulate unnecessary cost due to data entry temps. In-Pews Payments During In-Pew Weekend on February 18-19, your parish will receive envelopes from those who responded to your request to participate in the Appeal. Those envelopes do not have to be opened unless you determine there is cash enclosed. (See below) Please send all envelopes with pledges addressed to: Archbishop s Appeal, PO Box San Antonio, Texas Cash Donations Please do not send cash contributions by mail as this can result in theft and loss of funds. We recommend that you hand deliver the envelopes to the Appeal Office or issue a parish check along with a calculator tape confirming the amount received. You will also need to include the donor s envelope with their name and address. This will allow our office to give proper credit to the donor for their contribution. This will be done in the form of a tax letter at the end of the year. In addition, do not hold parishioner contributions for more than a week. This will delay the process of payment and will affect the timing of transactions made to donor bank accounts. Donor Correspondence Donors will receive the following correspondences from the Appeal Office. Thank you acknowledgements for all donations Pledge Reminders Gift Tax Statements

51 Impact Statements Hope for the Future Catholic Education Prior to coming to St. Leo the Great Catholic School, Bryan, now a 4th grader, was struggling in public school. His mom was looking for options. With tears in his eyes Melissa explained, my son did not know how to read, there was pain in his voice, and he felt lost at school. Melissa, who receives tuition assistance from Hope for the Future, said the turnaround was unbelievable after Bryan began attending Catholic School, within the first year he was reading, it was amazing! His Catholic school teachers treat him with love and attention. They encourage him in his class work at his best. I am so grateful for the difference Catholic school has made. Melissa, a self-employed single mom, drives over 70 miles a day to take her son to and from school. She has no regrets about making the drive knowing how beneficial the education has been, it is worth it, I don t care what I have to do. I will drive without complaint. Catholic school education has changed Bryan s outlook on school. He would come home stressed from public school and depressed. Now, he comes home worth a huge smile on his face, it makes everything worth it, said Melissa. Melissa understands the value of a Catholic school education and appreciates the tuition assistance she receives through Hope for Future with the generous support from the Appeal donors. I m thankful for the opportunity to send my son to Catholic school. Without support, it would not be possible. Please continue to support the Appeal to help students and families like Melissa and her son Bryan. Catholic Television of San Antonio Evangelization through Communication Catholic Television of San Antonio (CTSA) is blessed with the generous support from Appeal donors. When you give to the Archbishop s Appeal you provide an impact to those who are in a hospital bed or homebound. Catholic Television of San Antonio recently heard from a gentleman who shared that his mother is in the middle of a lengthy illness that has kept her homebound. He thanked CTSA for the televised daily Mass and how this was her only means to experience the Mass. These types of phone calls come to Catholic Television frequently, but are only possible with the support from Appeal donors like you. In addition, Catholic Television hears from the homebound on the San Fernando Cathedral Mass each week. We are told by many that they are blessed to stay in touch with the Mother Church, and for them this is the only Mass they will be exposed to on any given Sunday. Your generous support to the Appeal helps to bring Christ to those who are unable to attend Mass due to illness or any means of transportation. Please continue to support the Archbishop s Appeal to continue the ministry of Catholic Television of San Antonio. A ministry that brings Christ to His people through television broadcast

52 Impact Statements Vocations Office The Archdiocese of San Antonio Vocation Office is blessed when you provide your generous support to the Archbishop s Appeal. When you give to the Archbishop s Appeal you support the formation of priest to serve in our parishes as well as foster the growth of women religious in our community. The Vocations Ministry assists men and women to answer God s call to take up their cross and follow Him. The Mission of the Vocation Office is to help initiate, nurture, support, and encourage persons of all ages to discern their call to a religious life. Currently, more than 30 men have accepted the call to discern the vocation to the priesthood and religious life. Juan commented. I ve been talking to Father in the Vocation Office for about two years and I am glad that he invited me to attend a Vocation Retreat. I ve been discerning my call to the priesthood for about three years. The Vocations Retreat is made possible by donors like you to the Archbishop s Appeal. The annual Vocation Retreat provides an opportunity for young men and women to clear their mind and open their heart to God. It is an opportunity for those discerning their call to visit with priests and religious about their happiness in their service to Christ and His people. Juan has officially been accepted to begin his journey through his ongoing discernment in his studies to the priesthood. Christina shared I live in Crane, Texas, near Odessa, and I drove five hours to be here this weekend. I want to learn more about other communities to help me in discerning my vocation. I know I am being called to this life. This retreat weekend gives me a chance to meet and visit with other religious communities to see where God is calling me to serve. It s wonderful to have this opportunity to spend an entire weekend with others like myself who are discerning as well as spending time with the other religious women. With your support to the Archbishop s Appeal, men and women will have an opportunity to explore their call to serve God in a religious life. Please continue to pray and support the Appeal so that many young men and women accept their call to serve Christ people and His church through a religious life. 52

55 Impact Statements Parish Support Line, Catholic Charities Catholic Charities Parish Support Line is blessed when you provide your generous support to the Archbishop s Appeal. When you give to the Archbishop s Appeal you make a difference in the lives of those who need emergency assistance. The Parish Support Line is the first line of defense for a Priest when they do not have the resources to assist a parishioner. The Parish Support Line is available for priest to contact Catholic Charities to request emergency support and services for individuals in need. Recently, the Parish Support Line received a call from a pastor in need of assistance to serve his parishioner who lost her job. Linda previously worked as professional woman and did not know the system of social service assistance. On the verge of being evicted with her 10 year old daughter. Linda turned to her pastor, who contacted the Parish Support Line, Catholic Charities. With the support of Appeal donors, the Parish Support Line is available to help pastors to assist a parishioner who turns to him in great need. Linda received assistance for rent, counseling services, and was put in contact with someone for a job. Linda and her daughter are rebuilding their lives and becoming stable. Sometimes we all need a little helping hand. As faithful servants, we are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus to serve His people in need. Please consider making a gift to the Archbishop s Appeal to support ministries like the Parish Support Line to serve Christ s people in need

56 FAQs about the Archbishop's Appeal Q: I ve never used Appeal Ministries, so how do I benefit from the Appeal? A: Four personal benefits flow from your Appeal gift: 1) Seminarians are educated to continue to staff our parishes and missions to provide the sacraments and preach the Gospel for years and generations to come. It costs approximately 40 thousand dollars per year for each seminarian. Most men are in the seminary for 6 years before they are ordained to the priesthood. 2) Your gift express gratitude to God for the gifts by ensuring that Christ s mission continues for our children and loved ones. 3) Your gift to the Appeal enables the Church to do God s work throughout the Archdiocese of San Antonio by supporting a variety of Catholic social service programs and evangelization ministry services that you and your parish community may benefit from (i.e. World Youth Day, Assembly, Catechist Formation, Guadalupe Center). 4) Your gift fulfills a portion of your responsibility to make the Church what God wants and needs it to be. We are responsible for providing the resources of time, talent, and treasure that the Church needs to carry out its mission of salvation for all. Nothing relieves us of this responsibility. Q: How is the Archbishop's Annual Appeal conducted? A: The Archdiocese of San Antonio conducts an annual campaign (as is the case in most dioceses in the United States), to help fund the work of its pastoral ministries and that of Catholic agencies and ministries that provide services and assistance to the poor and destitute and work to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Appeal starts in January and concludes in December of the same year. Q: Why should people give? A: Catholics should give because they are grateful for the gifts that God has given them in their lives and because of the great good that their giving brings to the world. Q: I already support my parish, isn t that enough? A: The Annual Appeal provides the opportunity to support our wider Church family, the Archdiocese of San Antonio, as well as our own parish ministries. When we say the Creed, we reaffirm the fact that we are members of the one, holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We are saying that we believe that every parish and every parishioner is responsible not only for his or her parish, but also for the well-being of the Church throughout the archdiocese and the world. Q: I would like to know how my gift will benefit the parishes outside of the San Antonio urban area. A: The pastoral ministries of the archdiocese are available to provide support to all parishes regardless of location. The Archbishop s Appeal funds the education of the seminarians who will then move forward to serve through our parish communities. Catechists who are teaching the children of your parish receive training through our Lay Leadership Formation Fund. In addition, parishes who are financially unable to purchase religious educational materials may submit a request to determine if they qualify to receive support for the purchase of religious education materials. Engaged couples receive pre-marital counseling retreats through the Office of Pastoral Ministries. The Archdiocese of San Antonio website, Catholic Television, and Today s Catholic Newspaper are evangelization resources made available because the of the support given to the Archbishop s Appeal. These examples are just a few of the wide variety of services provided by archdiocesan offices and ministries to parishes and parishioners across the archdiocese. Q: I m a full-time college student. How can I help with the Archbishop s Appeal? A: Get involved in your parish or your school s campus ministry program. Give generously of your time and talent and consider giving up an occasional pizza or movie to help someone who is less fortunate. Your gift will make a difference! Get into the habit of giving of yourself, your talents, your time and your treasure. It is never too soon to practice being a good steward! 56

57 Appeal Q&A What is the mission and purpose of the Archbishop s Appeal? The Archbishop s Appeal is a living manifestation of the Word of God serving the least of our sisters and brothers. Its mission is to identify, develop and acquire the financial resources to provide the services and programs needed for the material, educational, and spiritual needs of God s people in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. It especially works to promote the gospel message and provides resources to assist the poor and vulnerable, the marginalized and disenfranchised, the uneducated and undereducated and those who find themselves in desperate situations. It is an opportunity for Catholics throughout the Archdiocese to join together to express their solidarity with the Church and the Archbishop of San Antonio by making a freewill contribution to help carry on the important work Christ has entrusted to us as God s stewards. Why should your parishioners give to the Archbishop s Appeal? God has given each one of us gifts, graces, talents and abilities that are to be share responsibly and wisely with others. Stewardship is more than the occasional act of charity and service. It is the way in which we live our lives as Disciples of Christ. It is how we give of our time, talent and treasure in thanksgiving for all the blessings we have received. Why is participation in the Appeal important? God has given each one of us gifts, graces, talents and resources that are to be shared responsibly and wisely with Christ people in our community. The Appeal is an opportunity for us as disciples to help to build our Catholic faith in San Antonio. When donors give to the Appeal they practice true authentic stewardship and discipleship as an act of charity and service for well-being of Christ s people. When donors respond to the Appeal they respond to the call given to us by Christ to shepherd His people. This is done through practicing good stewardship. Stewardship is the way in which we live out our lives as a disciple of Christ, the commitment we give of our time, talent, and treasure in gratitude for the blessings that we have received from God. At the end of every Mass, we are called to go in peace to love and serve the Lord. This is our call to help build our faith community. One person cannot do it all so, we must all do our part. Together, through the Appeal we can uplift, transform, and welcome others into our Catholic faith. Is there a guide for how much to contribute? Turn to the Holy Spirit to guide you in prayer on how you can financially support and pray for the Appeal. Participation is more important than amount, but as a guide, 1% of the total annual household income would be appropriate. Other suggestions include $1 for each day or each week of the year ($365 or $52), and $10 a month for the 10 months of the pledge ($100). However, any gift of any amount, whether a pledge or a onetime gift, from each parishioner would ensure that the goals for both the parish and the Archdiocese are met. As the Pastor and or Appeal Coordinator your responsibilities will be to encourage your parish community to support the Appeal in any way they can
