MICHAEL S ORDINATION & FIRST MASS Next Saturday, May 21 at 9:30 am at the Basilica of the National Shrine, Dominican Br. Michael Weibley, O.P. will be ordained to the priesthood of Jesus Christ. Br. Michael has been serving at St. Jane's over the past two years in various ministries. Everyone is invited to attend. In addition, Fr. Michael will celebrate his first Mass, here at St. Jane de Chantal, next Sunday, May 22 at 10:00 am. A reception for Fr. Michael will follow the Mass in Caulfield Hall. USED CLOTHING DROP-OFF SHED St. Jane de Chantal Parish has contracted with a new vendor to provide a used clothing drop-off shed. Items accepted: all clothing, sneakers, belts, purses, blankets, sheets, pillowcases, drapes, and stuffed toys. Help keep your donation clean and dry by placing items in plastic bags. Items not accepted: rags, fabric scraps, toys, and household goods; understand that these items are expensive to dispose of. The accepted items will not be cut up or shredded, and will benefit people in the U.S. and in third-world countries. After each pick-up, our parish receives a stipend, the total of which has been distributed between the Msgr. Christopher Scholarship Fund, St. Martin s Cloak, and the School Endowment Fund. REMEMBER IN PRAYER... those who are sick, and all those in our nursing homes and hospitals, especially Mary Cahill, Susan Tise, Dianne Fay Dickinson, and Pat Krisko.... those who have died, especially Mary Hathway. YOUTH GROUP: MAY ACTIVITIES This Sunday, May 15, we will explore the topic of discernment and vocations. Finally, on May 22 we will take an honest look at how social media should always be used for good and never for evil. IN OUR YOUNG ADULT FELLOWSHIP For single Catholics, ages Meet monthly for spiritual and social events. Find us on Facebook (St. Jane's Young Adult Fellowship) or YOUNG ADULT SERIES ON THE SAINTS What does it mean to be a saint and how does one attain sainthood? The St. Jane's YAF is hosting a four-part saint series to study the lives of some of our modern saints. The last session of the series will be held at 7:00 pm at the Seton Center on May 23 (Louis and Zelie Martin, parents of St. Therese of Lisieux). Come explore and discuss ways in which the lives of these holy individuals relate to our lives and how we can grow closer to God. IN OUR BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL Check out the St. Jane de Chantal School website at to get information on admissions, see what each classroom is studying, and more. SPACEX VISIT On May 4, St. Jane de Chantal welcomed Tim Hughes from SpaceX, who spoke to the entire school about the future of rockets and private space travel. The students were on the edge of their seats as they watched videos of the successful landing of the SpaceX Falcon s rocket. Mr. Hughes, son of former kindergarten teacher, Sandy Hughes, also showed exciting videos of rockets exploding during the trial and error phase of rocket science. The visit inspired many students to show an interest in future careers in engineering and science. Hard work, math skills, and creativity is what Mr. Hughes told the students SpaceX values in their future employees. The students showed their love of space with excellent questions and enthusiasm. MOTHER S DAY SHOW On Friday, May 6, the first grade classes welcomed their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and special women in their lives into the classroom for the annual Mother s Day Show. The students performed skits, sang songs, read books, prayed the rosary, and honored the mother of us all, the Virgin Mary. Tissues were a must for this beautiful show that was the first grade s gift to their mothers. The program ended with the singing of Immaculate Mary and the crowning of Mary with beautiful flowers. FIRST COMMUNION On Saturday, May 7, St. Jane de Chantal School and Faith Formation second grade students celebrated their first Holy Communion. Dressed in white with veils and white gloves, or jackets and ties, the children celebrated the next big step in their Catholic faith. The class has been preparing for months with retreats on the weekend, and learning the importance of Holy Communion in their classes. Congratulations to all First Communicants, their teachers, and their families for this big event! GRANDPARENT S DAY On Monday, May 9, St. Jane de Chantal welcomed all grandparents to join in a day of celebration with their grandchildren at school. After attending Mass with their grandchildren, grandparents were invited back to the school for refreshments and visits to the classrooms. Students spent the morning showing their grandparents their school routine, singing special songs, playing games, and enjoying their company. 4 MAY 15, 2016 MEMORIAL DAY AT CATHOLIC CEMETERIES On Memorial Day, offer a spiritual work of mercy and pray in loving memory of family, friends, and fellow citizens who have given their lives for our freedom and now experience their destiny in the love of Christ. Special outdoor Masses will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, May 30 on the sacred ground of the Catholic cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Washington, including All Souls Cemetery (11401 Brink Rd., Germantown, MD, ); and Gate of Heaven Cemetery (13801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, MD, ). QUO VADIS CAMP FOR HIGH SCHOOL MEN The annual Quo Vadis Camp will be from June at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD. The camp is for young men in high school who may be considering a vocation to the priesthood. There will be opportunities for prayer, small group discussion, Mass, and silent reflection, as well time for recreation and sports. PREPARING WELL AT CATHOLIC CEMETERIES When there is a death in the family, major decisions need to be made quickly, usually by people who are grief-stricken. Yet, CCAW Cemetery Managers note the presence of some peace among families whose loved ones have prepared well and made cemetery arrangements before time of death. This preparation is an act of hope and faith in the life to come. It s a way of taking care of family and friends then by making decisions for them now. STEWARDSHIP One miracle of Pentecost was that, despite their diversity, each listener heard God s word in his or her own language. The meaning for stewardship is that, by sharing the gifts poured out on us by the Holy Spirit, we will be empowered to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters, whatever they may be. PARISH SUPPORT FOR MAY 8, 2016 Offertory May 10, 2015 Attendance May 10, 2016 $12, $13, SECOND COLLECTION: CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES The second collection this weekend, May 14/15, will be the annual collection to benefit Catholic Relief Services, the official international Catholic relief and development agency of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Six worldwide Catholic relief agencies are funded by this collection, which helps organizations provide pastoral support, humanitarian aid, and other vital assistance to poor and vulnerable persons around the world. The work supported through this collection reunites families separated by war and disaster, teaches essential skills for success, and gives a voice to the under-represented everywhere. POOR BOX The Poor Box next weekend, May 21/22, will benefit Birthright of Wheaton, which provides pregnancy testing, pro-life counseling, and emotional, material, and spiritual support to mothers facing crisis pregnancies. Volunteers are always needed. Training sessions are held frequently and individual training can be arranged. Men and women over the age of 18 are welcome.
