2 Welcome to St. Margaret Mary Parish 2 From A Grateful Heart They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, "Then who can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God. (Mark 10:26-27). You will do well if you keep my Commands! This week we hear St. Paul repeat the message in our reading from Matthews Gospel where Jesus commands his disciples to forgive and reconcile to the orthodoxy (truths) of the whole church. Sometimes this message of Jesus on binding and loosing is very misunderstood to be the subject of settling personal disputes. No Jesus is talking our discipleship and the proper way to live His teachings. Since, Jesus teaches and commands obedience to his good news, from those who wish to follow him, they are bound to loosed from obedience to the Word of God upon having hear the Word! See: (Matt. 16:19 and Matt. 18:18) Jesus is warning against ignoring the Word of God or applying personal interpretation to the Word of God. Discipleship requires obedience to the orthodox (true) message delivered from Jesus lips. (John 14:21) REMEMBER: (Matt. 16:18) Jesus is establishing his CHURCH out of the 12 Apostles. (the newly restored 12 tribes of Israel, Matt. 19:28) So, Jesus gies them responsibility to teach, guide the Truth of God as He gives it to them and to guard those teachings from error or heresy. All that said the bottom line is the LAW. the Law of Love! However, as Jesus insists, forgiveness must happen and those who are taught error need correction. All this needs to precede Love of Neighbor. For, if one cannot forgive, neither can they love out of concern for others. Love then builds a Church, a community of love, a people of God. All this building needs direction, instruction and protection from errors to the truth. Jesus is building a community of love. God is Love. We are called to live in community; in God; in Love of one another. (continued next column) (continued from previous column) So, Jesus insists that If you love me you will keep my commands The Church is God s community of love. We come together to help each other in the mission of love, as Jesus gave us the twelve Apostles who are our Bishops today. The lesson we need to take away from the readings today is how Jesus has done the work of Salvation for us. We can only attain that salvation by participating in what he has done. Discipleship now tells us to trust in Jesus, His Message and the vehicle established as the means of our eternal life = The Church with the sacraments and the Bishops to help us along the way of Salvation. As Aaron Rogers might say: Salvation, Let s get after it May the Heart of The Savior Bless you! Fr. Patrick Nelson, SDS Struggles of Adult Children and Aging Parents We all want the best for our parents. But in the process of trying to do what is best for them, adult children often need to honestly assess their own feelings. Over the years I have identified two common situations in which adult children often find themselves. How they handle their own feelings and fears will impact how they can be of help to their parents. Just as Mom and Dad may be struggling to consider moving from the family home, their children can find it equally upsetting. The house can represent so many memories and significant moments for a family. Families need to validate these feelings before a conversation about an actual move can go forward. For others, the primary difficulty is feeling uncomfortable with changing roles. We really do not become the parents of our parents; we will always be their children. Yet, it may feel that our parents are now looking to us for the answers. Most children feel sympathetic that their parents are undergoing a transition in life that can be emotional and challenging. If they are honest with themselves, they are in transition as well. We want our parents to remain the healthy, vigorous and in-charge person we ve always known. Unfortunately that s not always possible. Recently in one of my talks, after hearing several audience members share stories of parents reluctance to move and the difficulty they were having getting Mom or Dad to accept the inevitable, a woman raised her hand and said, I have to admit that I m having as much difficulty with this transition as my mother is. I m really struggling with the fact that I have to put my mother in a place that she may not want to go. I feel like a horrible person and a bad child. She wasn t alone in her thoughts. At any given moment we can become that 8-year-old child who is trying to please their parent and gain their praise. But a moment later, in that same conversation, we may have to fill the role of advisor out of necessity. Honoring our parents means doing the right thing by them. Archdiocesan and insurance regulations require that this process be completed by parish volunteers. The goal is rotating teams, so that you would not be on duty more than once every two weeks, usually Monday mornings at 8am. Pastoral Council members: we need at least 2 more. Your duty is to help discern, plan and carry out our parish goals for now and into the future. Would you like to designate your donation to a specific item that our parish community is in need of? Women Are Invited to Pray for Vocations Join the women of de Chantal for Eucharistic Adoration and spiritual formation at Saint Francis de Sales Seminary. We are women who are passionate about supporting vocations, families, and our own spirituality. We gather three times per year in the peace of the Seminary for adoration, formation and benediction, followed by a light reception. Dan will perform his music, including Here I Am Lord, Glory and Praise To Our God, You Are Near, and City of God, at the 5PM Mass with members from both St. Margaret Mary and Blessed Savior Parishes. We will have a light supper in Sampon Hall after Mass until 7PM and then An Evening of Music and Reflection With Dan Schutte will take place in the St. Margaret Mary Church from 7:15PM-8:45PM.
