3 PAGE 3 GETTING TO KNOW OUR NEW MEMBERS: CHARLA BAKER I was born in Ashland, KY where Ohio, WV, and KY touch the banks of the Ohio River. I come from a family of coal miners, steel workers, ministers, and one state representative in WV. Tough stock. I finished college at Appalachian with a BS in Elementary Education. In the public schools I taught grades K-5 and also served as an elementary school guidance counselor. I have two daughters, Rev. Stacey Littell Grimm and Kristina Paige Littell. Stacey serves as Associate Minister for Administration and Communication at FBC Burlington. She and her husband, David, have one son, Jacob. Kristi lives in Philadelphia. She is the Administrative CEO of two K-8 charter schools. She and her husband, Greg, have two children, Idris and Cora. I love children. Being a grandmother is a great joy. In 1981 I felt called to ministry. I left public schools to start a childcare ministry at my church. I also began my theological education at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. The church ordained me in I continued my theological education by specializing in Clinical Pastoral Education. This field allowed me to combine a love of pastoral care and education. I had the privilege of serving as Associate Director for Pastoral Care at several hospitals including Alamance Regional, Duke, and Rex. Most of my preparation to be a Clinical Pastoral Educator took place at UNC Hospitals, where I studied with Wayne Robinson and Nape Baker. A lifetime after that training, God blessed me by bringing Nape back into my life. We were married December 6, Together we share the joy and the challenge of combining our lives and our families. I feel very blessed by Nape s presence in my life in this way. Getting Binkley as part of the process is truly icing on the cake. I retired at the end of 2014 and moved to Chapel Hill from my Burlington home. I lost my father and mother in 2014 and 2015, respectively. I am finding that coping with all of these losses is harder than I expected. However, I am continuing to find myself catching my breath in awe of God's sustaining grace through this new husband and a safety net of longtime and new-found friends. I continue to grieve the losses but also to be excited about the re-creation of my life. Thanks be to God. THE BINKLEY HOMECOMING GOLF REPORT FALL 2015 The Fall 2015 Binkley Homecoming Golf Tournament was held just two days after Binkley s historic first Homecoming, as sixteen members and friends of Binkley Baptist Church competed in a friendly round at the Southwick Golf Course located on the outskirts of Swepsonville, west of Chapel Hill. The Homecoming Tournament was hosted by Nape Baker and Joe Clontz, with assistance from Ed Davis and Bob Phillips. Threatening reports of a cool rain kept all golfers on the alert, but rain held off and all completed the round in warm sunshine. Golfers were treated to a course where the Binkley Open began several years ago. Using the Captain s Choice format with unique rules and playing in four foursomes, Marcus McFaul, Bob Phillips, Allen Beale, and Nape Baker won the tournament with a score of under par. They took home specially crafted trophies from the workshop of Fred Schroeder. Marcus McFaul had the longest drive for men under 55, Charles Coble had the longest drive for men 55-74, Nape Baker had the longest drive for men 75 and older, and Geraldine King had the longest drive for women. The five par threes were no problem for Allen Davidson (who won two) and Don Willhoit, Ken Williams, and Allen Beale, who were closest to the flag on their drive. Carl Henley also recorded the longest putt made on the 11th green with a 4-foot beauty. A Spring 2016 outing is already in the works with details coming in the next few months.

4 KIDSCOPE CHILDCARE CENTER OPENING SOON Jennifer Decker, Director of the new childcare program, and her very resourceful staff have been hard at work setting up their classrooms, recruiting/training teachers and making new friends at Binkley. Part of their process entails making sure they meet all health/safety codes for the state and local agencies that regulate childcare services. Their goal is to open with a Five-Star rating (the highest possible). Children will arrive in early October if all goes according to plan. Working cooperatively with Binkley on many projects has allowed for the creation of a new and improved playground space, brighter, more energy efficient lighting and beautiful new furnishings in rooms 1,2,3,4 and 11. We are thankful for all who have helped in these child friendly endeavors. ALTERNATIVE GIFT FAIR COMING ON NOVEMBER 15 The AGF is an opportunity for you to learn, share, and support a variety of worthy causes and beautiful children through Christmas gift-giving with a social gospel emphasis. Non-profit groups from Chapel Hill and the surrounding area are invited to fill the hall with information and opportunities for your alternative Christmas shopping. Ever considered giving someone credit for a hive of honey bees for Christmas? Do you want to support the Binkley Preschool as you purchase holiday mountain greenery for your home? These opportunities and more will be at the fair. Join the Outreach Committee in the Fellowship Hall after worship on November 15 to shop and support at the same time. Please consider representing a non-profit that is near and dear to your heart. Here is a quote from a recent participant. "I wanted to reach out and see whether it might be possible for the Community Empowerment Fund (CEF) to join in for Binkley s Alternative Gifts Fair this coming holiday season. We hand-paint ceramic piggy banks and make jewelry out of pennies for the holidays. We would love to have a booth if you have any room!" Many thanks, Maggie. Below are some of the anticipated and previous Fair participants: The Inter-Faith Council (IFC) for Social Service, Church World Service, Heifer International, Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, Binkley Preschool, Orange Co. DSS Adopt a Person at Christmas, Eyes, Ears, Nose and Paws, The Community Empowerment Fund, Josh's Hope, Coalition for Peace with Justice and hopefully many more. If you want to represent a non-profit agency or cause at the AGF, please contact Dale Osborne dale@binkleychurch.org. We are also looking for two or three other people to help us organize the AGF. Join us at a fair with no fried food or rides but plenty of hope for all. NEWS FROM OUR ASSOCIATE MINISTER YOUTH HAPPENINGS Recently the church celebrated a wonderful Homecoming where many hands pitched in to make the work lighter. Some of those hands were the hard working youth of our church. The Youth Church School class moved tables and chairs on Sunday morning. The Youth Group and leaders moved tables and chairs on Sunday night. I am grateful for their contributions to the event. On Sunday night, September 20, the youth were pleased and privileged to listen to their peer and friend Sophi Nissler discuss her summer trip to Morocco. Sophi spent a month with a hospitable Moroccan family who helped her learn about and appreciate the culture of this beautiful African nation. Ask Sophi about her trip when you see her at Binkley. The youth will be off on their team-building whitewater rafting adventure this October We appreciate your prayers for our safe journey on the Nantahala River. PRACTICING GENEROSITY AND HOSPITALITY Many, but not all of you know that Binkley supports a Christ-centered community outreach program through the financial and prayerful contributions to our Pastor's Emergency/Discretionary Fund. From January to mid September, your support has allowed our church to meet critical financial and spiritual needs for nearly 200 members of our greater community. Over $11,000 has been distributed to help people at our doorstep pay for utility, rent, medicinal and other emergency needs. Members of the community are encouraged to come to the church on Fridays to discuss their very real concerns. On behalf of these incredibly hardworking children of God, I want to say "thank-you". If you would like to make a contribution to this fund, offering envelopes are available in the chair racks on every Communion Sunday. You may also simply mark your check made out to Binkley with "Pastor's Emergency/Discretionary Fund" in the item section and send it to the church office any day of the month. This ministry is one way our church lives out Jesus' teaching from Matthew 25:

The Festival, which will take place at Good Shepherd, Raleigh, will be based on Micah 6:8 (What does the Lord require of you...). Given Binkley s history and place of leadership in the realm of Social Justice, this theme seems particularly relevant and meaningful. Our Minister of Music, Daniel Cherrix, will share conducting and service playing responsibilities with the Cantors from Holy Trinity and Good Shepherd. This is a great opportunity for those of you who have not yet been able to join the Chancel Choir, but love to sing. We will be holding several rehearsals for this event that are not on Wednesday evening, and then on the afternoon of the 15th we will gather with the other two churches to have a dress rehearsal prior to the early evening service. 7 It is a pleasure to welcome Billy Barnes to speak at our October meeting. In the 90s he made 82 7-minute human interest stories for UNC-TV. He will talk to us from the point of view of a producer what he did to make his pieces captivating. After this overview, he will show 3 stories in their entirety, including a fascinating 2-part story about the Siamese twins, Chang and Eng Bunker, of NC. We will meet at 12:30 on Wednesday, 10/14, in the lounge for lunch ($8) followed by the program. A sign-up sheet is located on Dale Osborne's door, or contact the office at office@binkleychurch.org. If you wish to come just for the program, please sign up noting no meal so we can have a chair available for you. For more information please contact Barbara Harris at: barbharris99@gmail.com. BINKLEY CERTIFIED AS AN ORANGE COUNTY LIVING WAGE EMPLOYER In August, Binkley Church was the first church in Orange County to be certified as paying a living wage. A "living wage" is the amount that a worker must earn per hour to afford their basic necessities. The hourly wage needed to make ends here has been calculated as $12.75/hour for all regular full and part-time employees, or $11.25/hour for employees with health insurance. A new, voluntary non-profit organization, Orange County Living Wage (1) certifies Orange County employers that pay their employees a living wage and asks to be certified as such, and (2) recognizes and rewards those employers by connecting consumers and citizens to living wage certified businesses and organizations. The goal of the Orange County Living Wage project is to promote a local economy with more fairness, dignity, and prosperity for all. You can learn more about living wage issues in Orange County and about the Orange County Living Wage project at the Church School class Just Economic, Just Connections, Right Now on Nov. 8. You can also contact Binkley member Kimberly Brewer if you're interested in learning more about living wage certification (brewerunnin@gmail.com). BINKLEY PAGE 7 Binkley Readers will discuss the novel, The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh, at our next meeting, Friday, October 9, at 7:30 pm in the church library. Martha Hamilton will lead the discussion. Binkley Readers always welcomes new participants at any of our meetings on the second Friday of each month. The Binkley Art Show is getting very close now: time for you to go through your art works and get them ready to be hung or placed in our show. We are blessed with so many creative souls in our congregation, and we look forward to seeing lots of evidence of that fact hanging in the Fellowship Hall. You may bring your paintings, photographs, fiber art, wall pieces of various media, sculpture, pottery, glass, and/or jewelry to the church either on Friday, October 2 nd from 12 noon to 5:00 pm or on Saturday, October 3 rd from 9:00 am to noon, to the Fellowship Hall. There is a limit of five (5) objects per person. A $10 entrance fee per person or per family is payable when you deliver the work to help defray the expenses of the exhibit. Plan on enough time when you come to fill out a form with the name of the artist, the name of the piece, and the price of the piece if you choose to sell it. All work must be ready to be displayed. Work that is to be hung must have strong wire attached firmly to stable frames. There will be cases to display pottery, glass, jewelry, etc. The show will open for viewing on Sunday, October 11th after the 11:00 am church service and will run until November 22nd. If you have questions, call Lyn Lamont at or lynlamont@gmail.com

8 PAGE 8 ALLIANCE OF BAPTISTS ON OCTOBER 11TH As part of our month-long emphasis on Binkley "connections," we are pleased that Paula Dempsey, Director of Partnership Relations, will preach in the 11 am service on October 11th. the Alliance is one of our partner denominational bodies and represents a progressive, justice-driven understanding of the gospel and the Kingdom of God. Here's a piece of Paula's story and call: I enrolled in Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary with a strong sense of calling to be a pastor. I completed seminary in four years with a degree, some ministry experience, and my calling affirmed in ordination by the good folks at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church and my home church, Berry s Grove Baptist Church, Timberlake, N.C. I have lived out my call to be compassionate of all by serving as a local church pastor, a director of Christian social ministries, a college chaplain, a hospice chaplain, coordinator of a spirituality center, and in being a wife and mother. I have also deepened my sense of calling to the contemplative dimension of the Gospel by studying with Contemplative Outreach and The Shalem Institute. When the opportunity to serve through the Alliance came my way, it was as if all the gifts, skills, tools, and hard knocks in ministry I had accumulated over the years were being called forth. Since I began in 2009 serving on the leadership team of the Alliance I ve become more aware of the needs of the church and church leaders in our rapidly changing world. Additionally, I ve gotten more excited about what the Alliance has to offer in response to the needs. Our commitment to nurturing church leaders, partnership, shared power, radical hospitality, social justice, and the larger church in the world are all a part of making gentle our bruised world. I ve done some foolish things in my ministry; some considered my early involvement in the Alliance of Baptists as one of them. If so, then my prayer is that others will join me in repeating this ancient way of being and go the way of God s foolish ones. CELEBRATING OUR CONNECTIONS: WEDNESDAY NIGHTS IN OCTOBER Join Binkley friends on Wednesday Nights in the Lounge, beginning with supper at 5:30 pm, followed by an engaging program from 6-7:00 pm. For the first two weeks in October, we ll be hearing from two important larger groups that Binkley participates in. Sign up for the meal by checking Event on the Friendship Register the Sunday before or by calling the office by Tuesday noon. ($5.00 adults/$ and under) 10/7: LeDayne Polaski, Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America LeDayne will speak on current initiatives of BPFNA and give us an overview of this partner organization's ministry and witness to peace and justice. 10/14: James Harrison James is the new Executive Director of the American Baptist Churches of the South (ABCOTS).

9 PAGE 9 BINKLEY PRESCHOOL CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY Preschool In 1965, the members of the Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church felt very strongly that there was an unmet need in the community for the education of young children. Under the direction of the Christian Education Committee, Binkley Kindergarten was established. The goals of the program included quality curriculum, respect for diversity, affordability, and scholarship availability. In the mid 1970 s, the Kindergarten evolved into Binkley Preschool (ages 2, 3, and 4.) Over the past 50 years with the support of Binkley Church, Binkley Kindergarten/Preschool has educated thousands of children in the greater Chapel Hill area. True to the original mission, the Preschool has continued to provide scholarship assistance each year. What started as a $ award in 1965 has increased to $11,000 for the school year. Our records show that just over the past 10 years, these awards total approximately $100,000. For this school year, we have 74 families. While we do not officially track ethnicity, an unofficial look at our population tells us that we have families from 9 countries other than the US. Often these children come to us with little or no English. Of course, the language of play is universal. One of the goals of the entire Binkley family is teaching the children in our care about living in a community. Each year, we offer service opportunities for our children. Recent recipients include Meals on Wheels and NC Diaper Bank. We are celebrating the anniversary of Binkley Kindergarten/Preschool at the October 4, 11 am service at Binkley Baptist Church and after on the Big Playground for an ice cream social. We invite the congregation, the community, and especially current and alumni families to join us! PASTORAL ENTRANCES AND EXITS For those who were unable to attend in late July, the Transition Team invites you to another opportunity for congregational conversation around Pastoral Entrances and Exits. Join us on Sunday, October 4 from 4-6pm in the Lounge. Please RSVP to TTeam@binkleychurch.org. Join together to remember the pastoral and ministerial staff who have served our congregation in its first 57 years. We will use a timeline of staff members, have a chance to reflect, capture memories by posting them on the timeline, celebrate, and give thanks for all that has been. The session concludes with a time to ritually give thanks for, celebrate, heal, and let go of those past corporate and personal experiences that are unnecessary ballast as our Church journeys into the future. All of God's creatures are invited to the St. Francis courtyard at Binkley on Saturday, October 3 at 10am for the Blessing of the Animals. Please bring your animals! We will have a service that includes prayers, music, blessing, and great fun. We are pleased that dogs from Eyes Ears Nose and Paws will be present with us. Refreshments for both animals and humans will be provided!
