Well, for the most part. Macy's BIG parade and wrapping up Turkey Day with all the trimmings, I suppose, is the official start to the holiday season that many will welcome and some will simply get through. No matter our feeling though, The Season is upon us. Already we are hearing Christmas songs on the radio. Advertisements are everywhere with the latest and greatest trending gifts that are the must-haves of the season. The calendar, too, is bearing witness to the season for it is already filled up with get-togethers and parties and Christmas cheer. But, let's not get too carried away! Even though the Christmas tree has already been lit up, there's a most important season that invites us to linger a bit before Christmas! This weekend is the beginning of the season of Advent, four weeks leading up to the season of Christmas (which begins on December 25 this year, by the way). These four weeks are not just for those get-togethers and parties and such. These four weeks are a holy setting aside of time and space for reflection for anticipation...for preparation...for the return of our Lord Jesus. Our Advent worship will make way for us to reflect and anticipate and prepare. This year, I am preaching a four-part series based on a carol cantata, There is a Rose. The chancel choir will share one of the four suites of this beautiful musical each week in Advent. I know you will want to be here for this stirring worship experience. From the cantata foreword, "Who can capture the beauty of a rose? Through the years, musicians, poets, and artists have offered up countless songs, poems, and paintings - expressions of the loveliness contained in this one flower. How appropriate then that we compare our Lord Jesus, the Christ, to this universal symbol of beauty?" I encourage you to linger a while this Advent. And as you linger, dare to reflect...to anticipate...to prepare for the beauty that is our Christ. In this most wonderfully chaotic season, may God grant you stillness to simply...be.

3 Nov 29, 2018 THE "SOCK TREE" IS COMING! We are once again setting up a SOCK TREE to be ANGEL CHRISTMAS TREE (Located in Steel Hall) is hung with ornaments representing gifts to buy for the 15 children from the five families that will receive a Christmas Food Basket from our church this year. Each child will receive a gift of pants, shirt and jacket. Please help us make this Christmas special for these families. decorated with new socks donated by us! The tree will be set up in Steel Hall on Sundays beginning December 2. We will have three Sundays (December 2, 9 and 16) to bring the donated socks and hang them on the tree. The socks will then be delivered to Mountain Pine Schools for distribution to needy kids. Let's help keep those feet warm! Last year we donated 413 pairs of new socks - let's see if we can beat that number this year! Thanks for your support!! Blessings... Choose an ornament from the tree and take an instruction sheet. Sign your name on the tablet by the child s name, indicating the gift you will be buying. Bring your wrapped gift with the ornament attached and place under the tree or table. ALL GIFTS ARE DUE BY SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16TH REMEMBER THE Jackson House collection bins outside the church office. You may bring non-perishable food anytime and leave it in the bins, the food is then picked up and delivered to Jackson House.

4 Just a small sample of the gifts collected for Harvey s Chapel. 184 gifts were given for adults, 162 gifts for the children. Thank you church! It is so exciting to have children in Sunday School class again! Pictured are Madison Breedlove, member, and MacKynzie Alexander,who was visiting grandparents for Thanksgiving from Norman, AR. Madison and MacKynzie made crowns to symbolize and celebrate "Christ the King"Sunday...If you have grands or other children visiting you, please bring them to Sunday School at 9:30...We welcome them!! Looking for Housing! Hello! We are two physical therapy students from Carroll University in Waukesha, WI looking for housing from March 10 th to May 5 th in the Hot Springs Village area. We both have our clinicals at RehabCare Good Samaritan for 8 weeks and are interested in reaching out to you all for housing opportunities! We both love dogs and cats, are family oriented, and responsible. We are looking forward to visiting the great state of Arkansas and hope you can help us out!! 5 VUMC Chimes Weekly Newsletter Nov 29, 2018 WITNESS Coping with Grief Through the Holidays Starting November 8, January 10, 2019, Thursdays 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Is there such a thing as Good Grief? Is it possible to find your way after a loss of not only a partner, but losses of a friend or relative, especially this time of year? This group experience is not only to find answers to these questions, but it also about support from others dealing with similar feelings. THE PRAYER MINISTRY Four ways to send prayer requests: 1. Fill out the Prayer Request cards in the pews and put them in the offering plate. The mid-week Advent services will begin Wednesday, November 28 - December 19, 5:30 p.m. The theme for these will be "Unwrapping God's Gifts" and will explore the themes of peace, hope, joy, and love. These gifts are priceless, and they are ageless. How might we share these gifts in a world that is increasingly marked with division and polarization, with pain and despair? Chris There will be an Advent Book of Devotions available for everyone to be used throughout Advent for reflection on the meaning of the season. It will consist of a devotion, a scripture, a prayer and a space for you to write your thoughts and prayers for each day of Advent. Each week the focus will be on the meaning of the candles lit each Sunday - Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace. The Witness Committee is asking those interested in writing a devotional for each week to sign up for a particular day at the Opportunity Center.
