1 The BEACON Binkley Baptist Church 1712 Willow Drive Chapel Hill NC Church Staff Peter JB Carman Minister Dale Osborne Associate Minister Beth Honeycutt Minister of Christian Education Leandra Merea Strope Minister of Music Duane Gilbert Bookkeeper Maureen Rosen Office Manager Bo Lloyd Organist Not getting this newsletter by yet? What are you waiting for? us at and save a stamp and a tree! The Newsletter of Binkley Baptist Church May 26, 2010 From the (Not So) New Minister: Reflections After One Year It seems like just yesterday I was pulling into Chapel Hill in my aging green Honda, wheel bearings complaining loudly after a long drive. But yes, it really has been a year. In the year just past, it s been a pleasure to get to know many of you and at year s end, a little awkward but necessary to acknowledge that that I am still just getting to know others of you! And I sense that many of you, the members and friends of this church, are still just getting to know one another. So we are in the same boat. Don t be shy! Call if you want to visit together. I arrived in May 2009 at the time of year when a new Church Council and Diaconate were just starting up, and was startled to learn that in the life-rhythms of a university town summer was already there. I was further blessed to arrive in the midst of what to a recent resident of Western New York was a heat wave. It seemed to me I was living in a steam bath. The intervening year has been full of discoveries, and laden with grace. I had heard of Binkley Baptist Church for some time before I came here: the congregation is famous in some circles and causes headshaking in others. So I was admittedly curious. I haven t been disappointed! I have found a real, sometimes struggling, deeply committed, caring congregation, open to taking risks, deeply attached to its history but longing to move decisively into God s future. I am pleased to be serving in a community where we can acknowledge some flaws, but also take delight in the faithful witness that is our legacy and calling. Over the course of the past year you ve kept the new minister busy: it turned out you were more than ready to get rolling on some things. Individuals in this church came together with little or no prompting to do some key things, including a new publicity effort (now the Communications Committee); talking together about what worship is and how the congregation can be more engaged in shaping it (thanks Caryl and Wayne Price); bringing together your various justice and peace concerns in a concerted way (Binkley s new group, Peace and Justice Action); a Wednesday evening dinner with programs for adults and music for children; becoming more deliberate in welcoming visitors and guests on Sunday morning (thanks Membership Committee); Koinonia partnerships between members of Binkley and Barbee s Chapel; and much more. The constant has been Sunday worship and church school, a steady center in the midst of all the change in church and the ups and downs of our lives. As we move into our second year together, I am aware that more change is afoot. We are about to bid farewell to Christian Education Minister Beth Honeycutt, who is moving with her husband Brian Graves and their son Jonathan to the Asheville area as Brian enters graduate school again. We will miss Beth personally, even as we are glad for her family for a new opportunity. Goodbye plans are in the works. The Christian Education Board will be taking a role with me in obtaining interim leadership for our Education ministry, and the Church Council will shortly be taking action on an appropriate Search Committee. You have experienced a lot of transitions in the past few years. I am glad to be here as the result of one of them. As we move together into the future, I am also convinced that there is One among us who has been and will be a constant and yet dynamic presence. With that One we are ever in transition and yet, more deeply, already able to be there at the heart of things. May God s Spirit guide us and reassure us; and may we turn to the living Christ as our example and friend as we continue to travel this road together. In Christ s Peace, Peter JB Carman, Minister

2 OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES: Each year, funds to support outreach ministries are made available through the annual stewardship and budget process at Binkley. Information about Binkley's outreach ministry (including the 2010 Outreach Ministries budget) can be found on the church website. Applications to support outreach ministries may be submitted to the Outreach Committee for consideration. The deadline for receiving applications is August 1st. Applications can be obtained at the bulletin board outside of the church kitchen, on the church website, or from Outreach Committee chair, Amy Powell. For more information contact Amy at BPFNA SUMMER CONFERENCE, July 12-17, Keuka College, Keuka Park, NY: Our theme for the week will be answering the challenging scriptural call for peace rooted in justice. This conference includes a special focus on immigrants and refugees. Youth and adults who have immigrated to North America are especially invited to attend. For more information go to NEW PEACE CENTER DEDICATED: The new Peace Center was dedicated at the Orange Prison on May 7. At the ceremony, Chaplain Ken Barker gave special recognition to Binkley Baptist Church for the first major gift toward the new worship facility. As a part of the capital funding for the new additions to our own facility, Binkley gave $25, Senator Elie Kinnaird praised all the volunteers for the fundraising and physical labor that went into constructing the multipurpose facility that is very much like a fellowship hall in small church. Inmates started the funding with their nickels and dimes 15 years ago and did a lot of work in construction. Rev. Rick Edens said it is a place where "the forsaken" may find grace and a path to a new life after prison. It was a very inspiring experience to represent Binkley at this event. Bob Phillips WORSHIP SCHEDULE CHANGE: On May 30, we will worship at 11:00 am, and there is no Sunday school. On June 6 we begin our 10:00 am Summer Worship Schedule. 3 THE OCCASIONAL BINKLEY GOLF OPEN REPORT, SPRING 2010 The 2010 Spring Binkley Open Golf Tournament concluded recently on a cool, wet day as seventeen members and friends of Binkley Baptist Church competed in a friendly round at the Quaker Creek Golf Club just north of Mebane. With assistance from Bob Phillips and Ed Davis, the Spring Tournament was hosted by Nape Baker and Joe Clontz. Golfers were treated to a course that is both challenging and fun. Using the Captain s Choice format with unique rules and playing in two foursomes and three threesomes, Allen Beale, Lyman Ferrell, Susan Wells and Joe Clontz won first place in a card playoff with a combined score of 55, 17 under par, in the friendly competition. They took home specially crafted trophies from the workshop of Fred Schroeder. Allen Beale had the longest drive for men under seventy-five years of age. The four par threes were no problem for Bob Phillips, Allen Beale, Carl Henley and James King, who were closest to the flag on their drives. Joe Clontz made the longest putt of 19 feet 6 inches on the number one handicap seventh green while Susan Wells had the longest drive for women. A fall 2010 outing is already in the works with details coming in the next few months. JUNE WORSHIP SCHEDULE June 6 10:00 AM WORSHIP STARTS. VBS: Monday-Friday, June 21-25, 9:00-12:00 Recognition in worship (children will sing): Sunday, June 27, 10:00 worship Please be praying for this ministry of the church. As of now, we have 60 children enrolled, and about three dozen adults and youth working to make this a fun and faithful experience for the kids. Our theme is God s World, Our World. This is actually one of the summer units of The Best of the Whole People of God Online, which has served as our Sunday School curriculum this year. We are turning that 5 Sunday unit into the 5 days of VBS! We will also be using our 5 senses throughout the week, helping us engage the bible stories AND God s world. An overview of our week looks like this: DAY EMPHASIS SCRIPTURE SENSE Monday Creation Care Psalm 8 Sight Tuesday Compassion Luke 7:11-17 Touch Wednesday Generosity Luke 7:36-50 Smell Thursday Listening for God 1 Kings 19 Sound Friday Fruits of the Spirit Galatians 5:22 Taste We will enjoy storytelling, music, science, art, playground time, and of course, snacks! In addition, our offering recipient is the Vasco de Gama Community Center in Brazil. We hope that the children will grow in their understanding and connection to each other, the church and our world.
