Exciting things are happening at Binkley for all ages, and we will be announcing them joyfully on Launch Sunday. Balloons, coffee and juice, breakfasty snacks, and the Old Time Gospel Band will greet you as you enter the Narthex on Sunday morning. Then in the Sanctuary, there will be storytelling, singing, and a light - filled opening assembly after which, children may follow Daniel, aka the Pied Piper, to their classrooms. Adults will remain in the Sanctuary to discover the wide-ranging options for Adult Christian Formation. Check the front page of your September newsletter for more information! CHILDREN S CHOIR KICK-OFF COOKOUT Sept 10, 4-6:30 pm Binkley Large Playground: We will sing a little, play games, eat some delicious food off the grill, have a blessing upon the new year, get to know several new singers, and welcome back returning choristers. An exciting year is ahead. You can help us by thinking about children who you come in contact with that seem naturally drawn to music and would benefit from being part of the choir and the Binkley Church community, and then inviting them to join us on the 10th. BEING MORTAL FILM SCREENING Sept. 11, 6:30-8:30 pm, Fellowship Hall: Come for a film screening and discussion of the PBS documentary Being Mortal. In the documentary, surgeon Atul Gawande, his colleagues, their patients and families, consider needs and the desires of patients and families facing terminal illness. A community discussion will follow the screening, moderated by Betsy Barton, MPH. Refreshments will be served. APPLY FOR OUTREACH FUNDING: Hurry -- Time is running out. Applications for Outreach Programs and Projects for 2017 are now available. The Outreach Committee is asking the congregation to nominate programs and projects for funding as part of our outreach efforts. We are asking applicants to consider asking for funds not only for institutions but also for outreach (service) projects in which the entire congregation can participate. The application form is available in your Friday Update and paper copies are available in the narthex. Applications must be submitted by Friday, September 9. If you submitted a request last year and want to request money again this year, you can resubmit the old application with updates. STAFF ANNOUNCEMENT: The Leadership Team is providing Emergency Family Leave September 3-October 3, 2016 for Stephanie Ford. The time away from all church responsibilities and electronic communications will provide space and energy to address these needs. We covet your prayers and respect for Stephanie s privacy during this time. During Stephanie s Family Leave time, her responsibilities will be covered by other staff and lay leadership. If you are working in Christian Formation, your contact persons are Nancy Cheek and Claudia Templeton. Wednesday evening programs will be overseen by Marcus McFaul, and the Wednesday morning prayer group will continue to meet.

7 WHY I TEACH SUNDAY SCHOOL I started teaching Sunday School when my daughter was in elementary school, and over twenty years later, why am I still doing it? I do it for the children, of course, but I also do it for myself. At every new child dedication, the congregation promises to nurture that child s faith development, and this is one way that I fulfill that promise. It is a privilege to participate in the lives of our children. Although I may be an important person in a child s church life only for a year or two, I grow to know that child. Years later, I may celebrate with the church a particular child s achievement, such as an award, or a graduation, or a baptism, and I can say to myself I know that young person. I am a little sheepish to admit that it makes me feel special. When I congratulate him or her, that young person may have a richer sense of the meaning of Binkley s promise to him. Will Laundon is being baptized at Binkley this Sunday. I was one of his Sunday School teachers. Our connection is almost twenty years old! I don t have enough space to write about all the other things I get out of teaching. A deeper understanding of my faith is certainly another one, but truly the one that gets me to re-enlist every year is the kids themselves. They are a joy to be around, and we have a blast! ~Roal Carlson YOUTH AND FAMILIES INVITED The arrival of September means it is time to reconnect with old friends and welcome new friends to the Binkley Youth Group ministry. 6th -12th graders and their families are invited to our Kick-Off dinner fellowship on September 11 at 6:00 pm. 9 THE INVITATION TO CHRIST S TABLE Holy Communion is a sacred and central part of Christian worship. It is a holy act, in which we, individually and corporately, commune with the Loving God. We welcome all who desire a deepened relationship with Christ to the Communion table. From time to time, questions arise concerning the participation of young children in this congregation s service of Holy Communion. The Diaconate recognizes that two historic Baptist principles inform this decision. Baptists are set apart from many other Christian traditions by our practice of Believer s Baptism, which signifies full membership in the church. Traditionally, many Baptist churches encourage persons to receive the Communion bread and cup for the first time after they have been baptized. At the same time, our historic insistence on Soul Liberty reminds us that Baptists value and respect each believer s unique and personal relationship with God. The Diaconate thus recommends that all members of Binkley continue to deepen their understanding of the meaning of Holy Communion, and that families enter into a time of discernment concerning when their children are able to appreciate the sacred nature of Communion. We affirm the responsibility of all believers to determine whether and when they and their children will partake of the Communion elements as we all participate in the service of Communion. THE DISCRETIONARY FUND Today you are invited to make a special offering to the Pastor Discretionary Fund. This fund allows Binkley to support our church and community members who are in financial crisis. Earmark any checks Discretionary Fund in the item section. Envelopes are available in the chair racks. NEW CHOIR VESTMENTS Thanks to the extravagant generosity of several anonymous donors, the Chancel Choir will be donning new robes (or vestments ) at this year s Launch Sunday on September 11th. The robe selection committee and I want you to know some of the history, and all of the good news surrounding the new vestments, so here it is: About a year ago, a new challenge/opportunity surfaced for the Chancel Choir. As new people joined the choir (we now have 50 people on the Chancel Choir roll) and as more guests began to sing with us for Homecoming, Vespers, Easter, and other special services, finding robes for everyone was difficult, not to mention an almost weekly source of frustration for our choir members and robe keepers. As word of this need began to be known around the church, a few Binkley members offered to pay for new vestments. What is even more fantastic is that these amazing and generous gifts were made completely independent of each other! A committee including Mark Walters, Anne Huffman, Janice Pope, Martha Green, Gretchen Aylsworth, Anna Roberson, and Alan Brown was convened to select the style, fabric, and color for the new robes. They looked at what sister churches use, thought about our own church history, mission statement, and architecture, talked with several robe manufacturers in the U.S. and Great Britain, looked at samples, and prayed! The committee chose lightweight ecclesiastical robes from the C.M. Almy Company in Armonk, NY. (The current choir robes are Geneva style gowns, academic robes that began to be used in church during the 1500 s by Church reformers.) Our new vestments, a term that indicates a garment is used in the church, are albs with scapulars. The alb and scapular (scapular comes from the Latin for shoulder) are of monastic origin. The scapular was perhaps originally a work apron and symbolizes servanthood and commitment to following the way of Jesus. Its origin as an apron, and later evolution to a sign of Christian commitment, combine the principles of prayer and work. We thought that seemed especially appropriate for a church choir, who leads the congregation in song, and who, according to St. Augustine, are among those who because they sing, they pray twice. I so appreciate the hard work and thoughtfulness of all the committee members, and special thanks goes to Gretchen Aylsworth who took on the enormous task of measuring and fitting. We are all profoundly grateful for the generous donors who have gifted us with vestments that say more than just we are singers, but that say we are servant singers in a community that seeks to faithfully follow the way of Jesus.
