2 PAGE 2 JUNE 2016 NEWSLETTER MEET THE NEW DIACONATE CHAIR S usan SUSAN READ is in her third year as a Binkley Deacon (this time around) and was recently elected chair for She has served Binkley Church in many capacities during her more than 25-year membership, including teaching Church School, serving as worship chair, teaching Vacation Bible School, and serving several times on Church Council. Her favorite Binkley involvement is the Yard Sale! Susan grew up in Louisburg, NC, with her older sister, Martha, and younger brother, David, and parents, Rose and Frank Read. After earning a B.A. in political science from UNC, Susan left Chapel Hill for a time, returning after her marriage in 1989 and remaining ever since. As a teacher of young children, Susan says her career has been very rewarding. After Montessori training and 13 years teaching that method, she felt a need to devote her skills and talents to the public school system. Susan returned to school, earning a B.A. in Elementary Education from NCCU and later her M.Ed. in Early Intervention and Family Support from UNC- CH. She currently works for the Durham Public Schools teaching at the Duke Hospital School. She very much likes the oneon-one opportunity to teach children in this alternate and often stressful setting. Her two daughters, Caroline and Camille, grew up in Binkley. Caroline, 27, is pursuing a degree in computing and security technology from Drexel University s online degree program. Camille, 23, will graduate from North Carolina State University in December with a double major in chemical engineering and paper science. Susan is not sure where their scientific and mathematical skills come from. There is one more member of the household who needs to be mentioned: Rosie, their dog. She will turn 17 this summer and has been a valued member of the family for a long time, along with her brother, Speedo, who died last spring at almost 16 years of age. When asked to take on the Diaconate leadership role, Susan took some time to think about it. Like many members of the church, she is an admitted introvert who is not as comfortable leading large, formal groups as she is in smaller settings. But one of the things she learned from her parents was that when asked to take on a job, you accepted the responsibility. So she said yes. As Susan begins her year as Deacon Chair, she has some hopes and wishes for the coming year. The Deacons will have a retreat on June 4 th and at that important launch of the deacons new year, she wants to focus on making the experience of being a Binkley Deacon a spiritual and meaningful This is a great time to be at Binkley, and I m excited to see what is to come. ~Susan Read, Diaconate Chair experience for those serving. As she says, being a Deacon is hard work. There s only a very general job description and often you feel you haven t done enough for your deacon group members. Replacing a sense of not measuring up with mutual support is central to her vision for her year as Chair. Later this month, Deacons will be assigned members and families and after that, they will be in touch with all of us to introduce themselves. Susan hopes that we will be responsive to our assigned Deacon when he or she reaches out to us because they want to help when needed. As she says, When our families have difficulties we want to be there, even if it only to pray for them. But first, they need to know who we are and that comes from us. Our new Deacon Chair is enthusiastic about the church at this time. She believes the transition work the congregation is doing is very healthy and that many people feel a sense of renewal. I m very excited about the church, she says. This is a great time to be at Binkley, and I m excited to see what is to come. Profile by Priscilla Bratcher

3 JUNE 2016 NEWSLETTER PAGE 3 MEET THE NEW DEACONS GRETCHEN AYLSWORTH I have been a member of Binkley for about 10 years. I m a member of the choir, a former deacon, and have helped with various receptions. I helped to found, and continue on the Board of EENP, training service dogs for mobility and medical assistance. My husband of forty years is Art. We have one daughter, Caroline, married to Joey Violandi. They have two children, Anthony, 14, and Sophia, 9. They live in Apex and are the joy of our lives. Completing our family are three dogs: Luke, Bonnie and Laney. By being a deacon I hope I can serve the church through personal relationships. MARCELLA BURK-GROON I have been a member of Binkley since I have been chair of Grounds Committee, I have served on the Council and as a Deacon. I have four children and ten grandchildren. I am an avid gardener, enjoy reading, doing things with my family and friends, and I like to travel. I agreed to be a Deacon because I think it is time for me to once again be a bit more involved with Binkley. STUART CANTRELL I've been a member of Binkley since we moved to Chapel Hill from Charlotte in I've been an Usher since we became members. I was also Earth Ministries Chair. I love to ride my bike. Hiking is also a passion. I have a great love of animals and am blessed to work at a vet hospital, where I've been for 9 years now. I am deliriously happily married to Stewart Bankhead. We've been together for 25 years and legally married for 6 years in August. We have two wonderful dogs: Jasper and Janis, and three super-sweet, cuddly cats: Flint, Willie, and Oliver. I said yes to being a deacon because I honestly just forgot to take my name off the list this year. When the call came, there was this gentle prodding inside that seemed to say "go ahead, it'll be fun," and I found myself saying yes! I've always been too scared and nervous to even think about being a Deacon, but I think, at this time in my journey, the time just feels right. I look forward to being of service in any way I can. TERRY HUNEYCUTT-HORN I think I joined Binkley in I joined the Sunday before Jim Pike s last Sunday before he retired. I currently serve as an Usher at Binkley. I work and love my job as the Child Custody Mediator of Alamance County for 20 years, and I love to read and crochet. I am married to Kevin Horn, no children. I am an aunt to 3 nephews, 1 niece, 5 great-nephews, and 3 great-nieces. Being Aunt Terry is my favorite role in life. I was an Education Minister in my first life for 12 years, and I have missed the caring work with the families in the church that I did then. I am looking forward to working with and caring for my deacon families, as well as more participation in worship. ALLAN MALTBIE A member of Binkley since 1987, we are grateful to have Allan join the Diaconate. KRISTEN SMITH Kristen Smith was dedicated, baptized, and spiritually formed at Binkley Baptist Church and made it her church home again when she returned to live in Chapel Hill in She has served as Deacon before, long ago served as youth representative on both the Church Council and Hymnal Selection Committee and can be found working the White Elephant room during the yard sale. Kristen s day job includes overseeing government relations and communications for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce. She serves on several boards including the Strowd Roses Foundation, Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness, and Alamance-Orange Prison Ministry. Kristen worships at Binkley with her mother Linnea, sister Kelly, and boyfriend Dylan. As a Deacon, she recognizes the crucial role in providing pastoral care and hopes to find more opportunities for corporate prayer (praying as a body of people). As a church member, Kristen is grateful for all of those that make it easier for differently abled people to worship and hopes to find ways for Binkley to welcome those from a broader political and theological spectrum. JIM WISE Linda and I have been attending Binkley for 25 years and have been members for 22 years. I have served 2 previous terms on the Diaconate, been Fellowship Co-chair, been Moderator, and have off and on taught Sunday School from K 12 many of the past 25 years. Some of my passions include music, hiking, camping and travelling and cooking. I have been actively involved in SAVE, Students Against Violence Everywhere for many years, as a chapter advisor at my school, in work with their National Youth Advisory Board and for the past 3 years as Chair of their National Board of Directors. My wife Linda Hill-Wise and I have been married for 30 years. We have 2 children: Amelia, 26, and Christopher, 24. I believe that we all have gifts to bring in support of the Church, and I believe that serving and supporting others is one way that I can contribute.

The service will include chorister recognition and selections performed by the Old Time Gospel Band and the Binkley Ringers. This is a wonderful way to introduce children to the 11:00 am service and the Children s Choir program here at Binkley Church. An Ice Cream Social catered by Mapleview Farms will follow in the St. Francis Courtyard. SUMMER CHOIR DATES ANNOUNCED Summer Choir begins June 12. The Summer Choir will also be singing on June 19, July 3, and August 14. If you can hear and hit a pitch, you can sing in the Binkley Baptist Church Summer Choir. No advance sign-up is required but you must attend the rehearsal on Sunday one hour before service time in the Choir Room. That's 10:00 a.m. for the 11:00 a.m. service. 6 PAGE 6 JUNE 2016 NEWSLETTER What folks are saying about the Service of Evening Prayer featuring Marc-Antoine Charpentier s TE DEUM at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on May 22 nd It was an amazing evening of music and devotion to God! what a wonderful ecumenical evening! Glorious Fabulous! Bravo!...a stellar service!...so rewarding!...enjoyed it SO much! Beautiful, reverent, spiritually filling! Music Notes ASCENSION DAY CELEBRATED AT BINKLEY WITH A SERVICE OF VESPERS The Chancel Choir along with instrumentalists and guest choristers from UNC-Chapel Hill celebrated Ascension Day a little early this year with a Service of Vespers on May 1 st at 5:00 pm in the Binkley Sanctuary. (Ascension Day, which commemorates Jesus ascension into heaven after the resurrection, is usually celebrated on a Thursday, the fortieth day of Easter, and this year was on Thursday, May 5 th ). This contemplative service of prayers and scripture readings featured the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, Thaddeus Cavuoti, Roland Martin, and F. Melius Christiansen. Dr. McFaul preached a sermon entitled The Church of the Ascension. In a service of Vespers or Evening Prayer it is customary that a setting of the Magnificat, or Song of Mary from the Gospel of Luke (Luke 1:46-55), is sung following the first lesson, and that the Nunc Dimittis, or Song of Simeon, also from Luke s Gospel (Luke 2:29-32) is sung following the second lesson. This recent service marked our first nod to that tradition when the choir sang a setting of the Mag and Nunc by contemporary Washington D.C. based composer Thaddeus Cavuoti. Our next Service of Vespers will be in celebration of All Souls on Sunday, October 30 th. YOUTH CHOIR CELEBRATES THE END OF THE SEASON The Binkley Youth Choir, along with their families, were honored for their service to the church and participation in Youth Choir during the season at a cookout at the home of Daniel Cherrix and Scott Hawkins immediately after the youth service on May 15 th, the Day of Pentecost. During the afternoon the youth were presented with goodie bags, had fun playing croquet, and enjoyed the culinary skills of Chef Scott. Youth Choir accompanist Nan Pardington was presented with a gift to honor her for her faithful service to the choir.
