On April 20 th Binkley children will be putting together Birthday Boxes for the children who attend the Operation New Life day care center housed in our building. You can help us make our service project a success by donating any of the following items that the children will put into boxes that they will then wrap. 2 GROUNDS COMMITTEE NEWS Contact: Janet O Neal joneal23@nc.rr.com BINKLEY IS BLOOMING! There are some new bloomers at Binkley this year. Take time to notice the small tree along the front driveway with small yellow blossoms called Cornus Mas. It is such a lovely hybrid Cornellian dogwood that we made an exception for our primarily native woodland area. The witch hazel, also along the driveway, was spectacular this January hope you saw it. Keep an eye on the new cherry tree at the stop sign at the corner of the parking lot. Donated by June Bratcher in memory of husband Bob, the tree should begin blooming in late April. Notice the beautiful red bark of the maple at the front narthex entrance near the chapel. Nancy Ehle donated this tree in memory of her mother and of husband Warren Nord. Moving around to the Harris Teeter side, the deciduous magnolias are showing their white blooms. If you venture into the courtyard, you can see lovely blooms and smell the fragrance of the daphne odora-- one of the finest fragrances on Earth. The pink dogwood near the educational wing entrance was donated by the Chancel Choir in memory of Barbara Nettles -Carlson's son. Last but not least, the inner courtyard features daffodils planted by the children and the Lenten roses around the labyrinth and memorial garden. All this and more awaits you if you take time to stroll around the grounds. Be attentive and notice the beauty of spring. Note: Plants that were donations were made in collaboration with the grounds committee to insure careful site selection and sustainable plans for maintenance and care. PARK WITH CARE AT BINKLEY The grounds committee would like to continue to encourage you to park in designated parking spaces. However if you continue parking in the non-spaces, please help make our work easier by staying off the mulched areas. When ruts are created, someone (that would be our small but dedicated volunteers) has to fill in the ruts! Thank you for your consideration. MOWERS NEEDED The greening of the earth means grass will be growing soon. The grounds committee could use a few committed volunteers who would be willing to mow the grass even if JUST ONCE this summer-- you pick the week and we will show you what to do! Of course, more than one week would be even more helpful! PEACE & JUSTICE NEWS Contact: Tom Fewel tfewel@gmail.com BEARING WITNESS: STRUGGLE AND HOPE IN ISRAEL-PALESTINE Rev. J. 4 FROM PETER S DESK Dear Binkley friends, This newsletter arrives in the midst of the week when we who follow Jesus reflect intentionally on the meaning of the long walk from Palm Sunday to Easter. As I write to you my mind remains full of memories from a recent pilgrimage with three other Binkley members: Ellen Stutts, Connie Gates and Roal Carlson. We were joined by David Gooch, a kindred spirit and friend from the Alliance of Baptists. Our journey was to northeastern Brazil. We spent much of our time meeting church people and visiting in different communities of faith: hardly a normal tourist experience! It was a deeply transformative time, speaking personally. We received extraordinary hospitality in the homes of friends in the Alianca Batista of Brazil in Maceio, Recife and Salvador. And I for one came to feel more deeply the meaning of our shared story of faith. There will be an opportunity to share more about this trip on Wednesday, April 10 save the dinner hour! But for now, just one brief thought. Resurrection is a reality best experienced in community. Luke s Gospel recounts the story of two travelers who after Christ s crucifixion encounter someone they do not recognize, get to talking, and share a meal with him in their home. It is only after he leaves that they recognize by the burning in their hearts just who this is who has been with them. Like these two unnamed travelers, you and I have also found ourselves in the presence of Christ although sometimes it takes a long time afterwards to figure out just who it was there among us, when we thought we were alone. I have met Christ in a favela of Recife, on a beach in South India, in a refugee camp in Thailand. I have also met Christ this last week speaking with a child in a living room in Chapel Hill, and in the honest queries of a stranger, in the narthex of Binkley Baptist Church. As we conclude the churchly journey to Easter in the next few days, may it be but the beginning of a faith journey to meet this very real risen Jesus, the one who shows up anonymous or disguised in our midst, who offers us grace; calls us to justice and mercy and love; and teaches us to give and receive honest loving hospitality. Happy Easter Binkley! Christ is walking with you, or just around the corner, waiting in the path ahead. In resurrection hope, Peter

5 Dear Binkley Congregation, Last Spring, the Music Committee and I asked for your input about Binkley's Music Program as we looked forward beyond my sabbatical and wondered what the changing needs of our congregation were. We appreciated your honest feedback, and we have kept your hopes for the future in front of us over the past year. Here are some ways that I, with the support and help of the Music Committee, staff, and others, have responded to your input. MUSIC REPORT ONE YEAR AFTER THE MUSIC SURVEY Binkley now has a handbell ensemble. The choirs continue to sing a variety of styles of anthems and other special music. We continue to welcome everyone who would like to sing or play into the choirs, regardless of experience or ability, and continue to commit ourselves to our best quality of leadership through music. I have continued to develop my understanding of how children engage with worship and have worked to support children s leadership within our worship services, through singing and the spoken word. Last summer, Binkley had its first Summer Musical Workshop for children. We will have our second this summer, engaging children in the telling of a Biblical story and connecting them to the church in myriad ways. I led music last summer at VBS, and will again this summer. I have spoken from the pulpit more frequently. The Chancel Choir and I have led musical services for All Saints Day, Advent (with Children's Choir and Youth Choir), and Lent, and we will lead another service in June. The Music Committee, staff, and I continue to envision ways that music can be utilized to inform our lives and connect us more to the holy and to each other. The staff and I continue to consider ways the music program (and other church programs) might be a better fit for more people, with the changing needs especially of young people in our society. One thing that was clear from the survey is that the congregation is generally energized and uplifted by guest instrumentalists. Last November, the All Saints Day service included Mozart's Requiem, and we had 15 student and professional instrumentalists in the orchestra. This calendar year we are faced with the reality that our budget for instrumentalists was eliminated. We will work to bring you creative and invigorating special services without the addition of paid players. Since soon after I came to Binkley I have known that there are many opinions here about hymns and about theology. In the survey, you told us some of your favorite hymns, and people continue to let me know about hymns you like and don t like. Preparing a service is a spiritual and artistic adventure for me, and when hymns support a theme and lend deeper thought to the message, many of us are moved. I will continue to consider the whole of each service as I prepare music, both congregational and choral pieces. There are many hymns, primarily from the Southern Baptist tradition, that hold deep warm memories for some members of our congregation, and I want to honor the positive memories that those hymns evoke. From time to time, we do sing some hymns from this tradition, as we do from other traditions. I also want to honor the work that some people in our congregation have done to untangle themselves from the theology and language of these particular hymns. As a life-long student of the idea that the language we use shapes the way we think, I hope to include hymns in worship services that will help lead us to deeper understanding of our strength and of our own belovedness as images and temples of the holy. I hope that the songs carried in the hearts of the children of Binkley will strengthen and embolden them for the work that they do in their lives now and in the years to come.

6 I want you to know that when I prepare worship services, I use a hymnbook in which I have marked each hymn that was requested on the survey. This tells me both those individual hymns and also, thinking more broadly, the styles of hymns that were most requested. I also carry with me the many comments I have received in other ways over the past year (and before) that give me a deeper sense of what excites and what frustrates members of this congregation. I have witnessed transformation here, in the community and in individuals, that has happened because of music and because of the way it has been cast within a service music has brought us closer together, challenged us, calmed us, excited us, prepared us, connected us to the holy. I ask that, for the time we are called to travel together, you trust me to hold your journey with respect and care. I will trust you to do the same with mine. I always welcome your comments around these issues and hope that you will engage me in conversation. In gratitude, Leandra Minister of Music MUSIC REPORT ONE YEAR AFTER THE MUSIC SURVEY continued.. Tending Hope, Fanning Sparks For five Wednesday nights during Lent, we gathered for supper and talked about the challenges facing the church in North America and the new winds of hope that are stirring. We heard about a new monastic community right here in Durham, learned about emerging church possibilities and ways technology might help us get the word out. We also reflected on the resurgence of the Wisdom Tradition, as well as considered insights from a religious historian about the changing church. There is a lot to talk about but here are some of my responses. First, historian, Diana Butler Bass contends that people today are hungry for relationship and authenticity, for community not for a set of beliefs. That sounds like good news to me! Binkley is a lively community where authentic relationships are fostered. We need to keep fanning that flame. Second, the church of today has to experiment, within and beyond its doors. We can be cheered by the good work of the ad hoc committee looking at ways to grow Binkley but imagination belongs to all of us. What are your ideas? I join other staff in wanting to listen. Third, in the Beatitudes, Jesus teaches that the pure (or single) of heart shall see God. This is not a statement about moral purity, nor of simplicity of emotion rather about tuning our minds and hearts to see on a new level, without dividing us versus them. This is still the tough job of the Christian life. We are called to such practice, over and over, in order to learn faith. Finally, Early Christians were called people of the Way known for their hospitality, caring for the sick, sharing of food, praying for one another, and gathering in small groups to hear the Jesus story and worship. Daily at Binkley, I witness such love one for another. How can we deepen these precious practices of our faith? Stephanie Minister of Christian Formation WEDNESDAY NIGHT LENTEN SERIES RECAP CHURCH IN CONFERENCE APRIL 14th After Sunday Service Election of New Church Council Officers The deacons have submitted a list of nominees for the upcoming Church Council. A list of the nominees will be made available in the April 14th bulletin. Please plan to attend and cast your vote.

BINKLEY PRESCHOOL NEWS Although the initial enrollment period for Binkley Preschool has concluded, Binkley accepts applications all year. This is especially helpful given the transient nature of the Chapel Hill area. The Preschool does have a few openings in the popular Tuesday/Thursday classes (2s and 3s) for the school year. The 2-day program is a great introduction to preschool. Binkley is a caring and supportive school with exceptional teachers. If you, or anyone you know is interested, please contact the Binkley Preschool Office at or director@binkleypreschool.org. Ellen Cole Binkley Preschool Director CONGRATULATIONS Walker Knight, a long time member of Binkley s children and youth programs, has been named an Eagle Scout, the highest honor conferred by the Boy Scouts of America. To receive the award, Scouts must fulfill requirements in leadership, service and outdoor skills, including an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads and manages. Walker is the son of Josiah and Myra Knight.

Tuna, Canned Fruit, Peas, Baked Beans, Pasta, Pinto and Black Beans PEACE & JUSTICE VIGIL Every Friday at 5 pm Corner of East Franklin Street and Elliott Road AN EVENING FOR HAITI Following the 2010 earthquake which hit Haiti, Binkley partnered with Family Health Ministries in providing relief efforts by sending financial contributions from Binkley's yard sale. Family Health Ministries is a non-profit organization focusing on women's and children's health in Haiti. It was started in 2000 by Dr. David Walmer, a Duke University Ob/Gyn physician and his wife Kathy, a pediatric nurse practitioner. Having seen the great need for cervical cancer prevention and safe childbirth in Haiti, they have worked tirelessly with amazing results. Not only does FHM maintain a school, an orphanage and a clinic, but they educate and employ Haitians along with a handful of US based employees to set priorities for meeting Haitian needs. In collaboration with key US partners including Duke University and Qiagen Sciences LLC, Family Health Ministries researches and develops programs tailored to Haitian needs. Their vision, in addition to building a hospital, is to create a complete health system for Haiti, a country currently with only nine pathologists for 10 million people. FHM will be hosting An Evening for Haiti on April 20 at the Durham Arts Council from 6-9. Food and music as well as the opportunity to bid on a wide variety of items promise to make for a delightful evening. The funds raised will go toward the building of a Family Health Center to continue the work of improving health care for the women and children of Haiti. Admission and dinner are $50 for adults and $30 for students. For more information contact Susan Rogers, an FHM Board member or Julie Lentz, an FHM volunteer, or visit the Family Health Ministries website: As Binkley continues to build relationships both locally and globally, Binkley members are invited and encouraged to become more involved with this organization in creating long term partnerships with the beautiful, faith filled communities of Haitians.
