What are you waiting for? us at and save a stamp and a tree! Launching A New Season of Christian Formation Can you feel the energy, excitement, and the newness? September is approaching, and that means a new year of Church School, a new approach to the caring for our children in the nursery, a new Christian Formation Committee (formerly Board of Christian Education), and the anticipation of a new minister for Christian formation. All new programs/opportunities for children, youth and adults begin on Launch Sunday, September 11. We begin that morning with assembly for all ages in the sanctuary, followed by the first meeting of church school classes. Then we recognize our teachers and leaders in worship, followed by a great time of fellowship at the Launch Lunch and, later that day, the first fall gatherings of youth choir and youth group. Keep an eye out for the new fall brochure outlining opportunities for all ages to engage in Christian formation, worship, music, and fellowship. It even has a handy calendar for all the church events you need to know about for the fall. The brochure will be available in the narthex and downloadable from the church website. There are still a number of opportunities to nurture the faith of our children, youth, and adults, including teaching Church School, serving in the nursery, journeying with youth, and facilitating conversations with adults. If you think you might be called to these ministries, please contact me or the chairs of the Christian Formation Committee, Meg Graham and Ashley Nissler. The church staff, many committees, and volunteers have been hard at work preparing for the new church year, and we hope the lineup of offerings will enrich and encourage the hearts and minds of all ages. 2 SAVE CHILDREN S CHURCH SCHOOL! Despite our best efforts, the Children s Committee has not been able to find teachers for all of the children's church school classes. If we don't find volunteers, we will not be able to begin church school on Launch Sunday. Please help! No teaching experience is required and Binkley provides the lesson plans. The commitment is once every 2 months (only 6 times this year), and it is great fun and deeply rewarding to love our children and provide hospitality to young families. Won't you give of your time in such a meaningful way? Bring a potluck dish for your family and 3-4 other people. (Single folks, adjust your contributions accordingly.) Beverages will be provided. We do not have a Fellowship Committee right now, so here are ways you may help: 1) volunteer to set-up the Fellowship Hall on Saturday, Sept. 10; 2) clean-up after the Lunch; 3) volunteer to help clean the kitchen prior to Launch Sunday. 3 MUSIC MINISTRY Hymnsing! This Sunday, August 28, come enjoy singing and hearing some of the congregation's favorite hymns, old and new, accompanied by organ and piano. Worship through song at the 11am service. The Chancel Choir is already gearing up for Fall, and Children's and Youth Choirs will begin rehearsing the week of Launch Sunday. This is a great time to get involved in making music at Binkley! Want to learn to ring handbells? Play in a brass ensemble? Share a solo during worship? Contact Leandra Strope, Minister of Music, to get started! leandra@binkleychurch.org The Chancel Choir rehearses Wednesday evenings, 7:30-9:00 pm. All adults are welcome. The Youth Choir will rehearse on Sunday afternoons, 5:00-6:00 pm. All 6th-12th graders are welcome. The Children's Choir will rehearse on Wednesdays, 6:00-7:00 pm. K-5th grade readers are welcome. Participation in any choir requires a commitment to attendance at weekly rehearsals. CALLING ALL YOUTH! If you are in 6 th through 12 th grades and you like people and God s beautiful world then you are ready for the Binkley Youth Group. We Kick-Off the year on September 11 at 6:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Our first night of the semester is a gathering for you and your entire family. This is an important event that allows us to share activities for the semester, share a meal and share hospitality for our new 6 th graders. Pamela Nielsen, our new Youth Committee Chair will be in attendance with our Youth Committee to serve you a great meal and invite you to be meal servers in the coming year. The meal begins at 6:00 pm right after Youth Choir ends. We aim to conclude by 7:30 pm. Join us and celebrate all things youthful! WE WELCOME UNIVERSITY STUDENTS back to the community. We are still behind in our anticipated pledge income, but this current deficit is lower than most years. Don t forget to help us with our Pastor s Discretionary Fund as our requests for financial aid have increased exponentially during the past few months. PRIMETIMERS THIS FALL! Primetimers is a group consisting of retirees and people who have the leisure to eat lunch on the second Wednesday of each month during the school year. Our primary purpose is social, a gathering when people can enjoy each others company over a meal. Usually we have a speaker giving a 30-minute talk, with discussion following. As a rule, we offer a catered lunch in the Binkley Lounge, though sometimes we change our venue. In December, we regularly have lunch at one of the retirement communities along with a musical program. Coordinators are Peter Carman, Gove Elder, Don Hamm, Nancy Joyner, Peg Kinnaird and Nell Morton. The first meeting of the season will be on September 14 at 12:30 in the Lounge. Bob Seymour, our prime Primetimer, will entertain us with a talk entitled Creative Epitaphs. Please sign up on the sheet provided across from the Minister of Education s door. The cost is $8.00.
